Which carpet steam cleaner is best?

Now that the puppy is getting a little older and little better housebroken, I am thinking about getting a carpet cleaner. There are spots from other pets and other days and I'm ready to give it a try to clean the carpets as good as possible. Does anyone have experience with these steam cleaners? Which works best?

I have used several different kinds in the past- but I have just bought my second Hoover Steam Vac. I burned my motor up sucking water out of the basement carpet after a pipe burst. I saved the holding tank and immediately went to WallyWorld and bought another one. IMHO they are the easiest to use and remove more water than the others I have used.
I do not have pets in the house, but I have a man and a couple boys who track in enough dirt to choke a horse...
And by the way, I have bought an extra Ureka upright bagless, yellow, I think Altima? Those are the ABSOLUTE best vac I have ever seen.
I have recommended it to several people who have purchased them and love them as well. I didn't realize how much dirt I was leaving with my windtunnel or Kirby until my son brought me his to try. He gave me his, and bought his GF one and himself another. I would buy one at a yard sale if I could find one. I never want to be without one!! :)

have had both, and both have worked just fine. we have a gravel driveway, 2 cats, so it's a must to have...

I like the Hoover Dual V for carpet cleaning - it has very good extraction (leaves carpet much drier than others) and it has a separate detergent container from the water and a rinse setting so you can do wash then rinse pass with clear water to remove detergent residue. Also you can pour un-used detergent back into the bottle because it's not diluted into the water until used by the machine! For HEPA vacuum people have different favorites but I like the Dyson canister vacs.

The good form of carpet cleaning is always prevention. Taking proper care and maintaining your carpet clean will save you money from having to buy expensive cleaning products. Never rub rashly and carelessly at a carpet stain, this may only cause it to smear and become permanent. Also, doing this will weaken the fiber causing your carpet to wear out quicker.

I've been researching steam cleaners. I don't need one for cleaning grout but in the process of reading lots of stuff on the web including reviews at Amazon, I don't think I would be very confident that any steam cleaner would clean grout. As someone else posted, I think you need a special grout cleaner but I also think that if you had such a cleaner, using it in combination with a steam cleaner might help facilitate the project more than if you did it without a steam cleaner. You would probably still need to scrub and wipe but seems like the steam cleaner would help loosen up the dirt once the grout cleaner was applied. I'm just guessing though. I hope you post if you find something that works.

I like my Steamfast, but I don't use it on things that would normally need a good hard scrubbing, such as baked on grease and stuff on a stovetop. I use it ALOT in the bathroom...I find it is wonderful to use around the toilet area, as well as the faucets (it sure shines up the chrome!). I'm able to get in all the nooks and crannies all over the bathroom and as long as it is completely warmed up (which doesn't take long) it doesn't leave a puddle of water. As for soap scum in the shower, no, it doesn't do a good job on that....but I didn't really expect it to. I use a good cleaner on my shower and my Black and Decker power scrubber as well as my Mr. Clean Magic erasers to get rid of the soap scum. In my mind, the steamer will never replace elbow grease when it comes to certain tasks. It's a tool I use to aid in my efforts to maintain a clean/sanitary home, but I don't expect miracles from it. jiggreen
