hi, usually at my house (us) we have turkey with homemade stuffing, mashed/gravy, peas and corn, whipped sweet potatoes baked in the oven with brown sugar, pureed butternut squash my moms cole slaw, jellied cranberry sauce, jello with whipped cream, pumpkin, apple and cherry pies, and whatever else someone decides to bring. mmmmmmmmmm ive been hungry for thanksgiving since august lol

Altho I am not sure about all Canadians,where I came from we used to do the turkey,dressing,gravy,mashed(whipped) potatoes,3 vegetables,usually peas,carrots and a squash baked with butter and brown sugar,dinner rolls,cranberry sauce.
Pumpkin pie is served for dessert,along with homemade apple pie as a rule.

There would always be a condiment tray of pickles,tomatoes,cheeses,olives etc.

A lot of other families here would also do a baked ham along with the turkey.

Thanks to my brother about 20 years ago, my kids think thanksgiving dinner should be an awesome 7-cheese lasagna. But my oldest DD and family needed the tradtional American fare when they came to visit a couple of years ago. I'm flexible.

Traditional! Turkey and stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, sweet potatoes, a couple of cranberry salads, two or three veggies (favorites are brussel sprouts, my sister's corn and macarooni and cheese casserole, green bean casserole), home made bread or rolls, pumpkin pie and pumpkin bars and maybe other pies as well. Plus specialties from anyone who is coming to dinner.

Turkey is the king of the table here :)
stuffing is inside it
mashed potatoes and gravy get served with it
harvest casserole accompanies it
cranberry jello finishes it off

Some other side dishes appear some years, but none stay constant like the above.

All of the above, but my mother always made a fruit salad to go with it, and so did I back when I cooked Thanksgiving dinners.

We have a big family...All of my cousins that I was raised with and our families get together, so we usually have 3 or 4 turkeys and ham. I don't like turkey so I always choose the ham. We usually have au gratin potatoes and mashed potatoes with gravy. I choose the au gratin. There are tons of differs side dish choices..I usually try to take something different...for instance, cooked purple cabbage and apples...(of course I'm the only one who eats my weird stuff...but I love it.
We always rent the fire barn. It's a hall attached to our volunteer fire dept building.(out of city limits)We've been renting it for so many years they give us first choice.
Our family outgrew a house a long time ago...lol

There are always a couple long tables full of deserts...pumpkin pie is #1....then there are always other pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies, and whatever you can imagine...

AND there is always lots of extra for drop in friends.

We start around noon and are there till sometime 11:00pm

We eat two meals and play cards. We usually have about three or four tables going with a winners table...They play Pitch...it's a family tradition for us...We have a good time...

When we owned a motel, we celebrated Canadian Thanksgiving every year. All the family would come for the weekend, and obviously we had guest rooms, owning the motel. We did the traditional dinner except some years DS would do the turkey in the BBQ grill. The weather was usually real nice so the kids played outside.Then, when the regular Holiday came, I could give my help the day off to be with their families. I really miss those days. Dottie

I love that our Thanksgiving is in October. The weather is usually nice and crisp, and it's not as close to Christmas as is the U.S. one.

We have the traditional Turkey and all the fixings (dressing, turnip puff), colelsaw, carrot slaw/salad, marinated carrot salad, cranberries. Mom makes the most awesome mashed potato casserole. She loves dishes that can be made in advance and these are made the day before with cream cheese and whipping cream and then put in a casserole and reheated through. Mmmmm. The turnip puff is made in advance as well.

She's having a Spriral ham this year as well as the turkey.

i was just thinking the same thing, jasdip...it's such a hassle to get everyone together, then turn around and do it again in 3 weeks or so...maybe i'll suggest it for next year, lol...after all we're practically neighbors...(detroit)

My ex-MIL loved Thanksgiving, she had two rules of thumb about the cooking. Count the number of people present at the dinner (adults, not kids) and allow one vegetable dish and one pie for each person. Four adults= four veg dishes and four pies.

I've lived in several states in the US and the strangest thing I've found is that in Baltimore MD they serve saurkraut with Thanksgiving dinner. I've seen that no where else. Everything else about the meal is traditional.

I can't tell who's Canadian vs US, but as I recall Red Green, the Possum Lodge celebrates with pretty much the traditional fare we have as "southerners". And he cooked it en route to his destination! Cooked the turkey on the manifold, the gravy was in the washer fluid tank to baste the turkey on the way, potatoes went into the hub caps and mashed on the way, peas went into the radiator and somehow the dinner rolls came out the exhaust pipe. Don't remember the details but it was amusing!

My mother always put on a glorious feast for the holidays when we'd host and that's where I learned the value of an electric roaster. My dad always insisted that there be at least two meats. Often along with turkey was beef roast, occasionally ham or pork roast, a lot depended on what looked good at the store. She normally made pumpkin and lemon merangue (sp?) pie and sometimes others. Often homemade dinner rolls and my aunt would often bring lefse. (We're Scandinavian the "potato napkin" is a staple!)

Since I've been spending the holidays by myself I had gotten away from making a big traditional meal, but several years ago I decided to start a new tradition. Something different each year, but something special. Something I don't have very often or a favorite. One year I did "Italian" with my (and if I do say so myself, fabulous) 7(or so) cheese/3-4 meat Lasagna, great garlic bread, a super salad, wine, etc) then another year I did "Scandinavian", with fish, meatballs, mashed potatoes, Lefse, and more and vary it. One year I did "Diner done right" with a graat burger, home made fries (done right), apple pie, corn, etc. Other times, I've just not felt well or been really tired so I'd do a homemade pizza, meatloaf, Spaghetti with Pepperoni bread, hotdish & garlic bread or something. I've really enjoyed doing this and I now look forward to holidays again. Every now and then I do a turkey breast during the year. I usually have a bottle of champagne around and have a great time. Call some long distance friends or chat online. Don't have the hassles of family. And my family has a multitude of hassles! I start thinking back and holy mackeral, it's been a lot of years I've been doing this now!
