Another weekend

Good Friday morning. Hope everyone had a great week and are looking forward to the weekend. Been reading about the meetup in Houston and wish I could join the group. My sister is visiting me and today well head to Va to visit my daughter and her family then collapse this evening. It has been a very busy week. Will probably be driving my sis back to Pa either Sat or Sunday. What is everyone else doing? Satine

Good morning Satine and the KT. We are camped South of Houston. Yesterday I spent the day with MarilynC (possum lady) and Gabby. Lots of laughs and good food.

Today is clean the motor home day and doing laundry. Should take all of an hour. LOL Then I think Mike and I will head out to find some Beall's outlets and get a few groceries.

Tomorrow Marilyn and I will be headed to the get together in Houston. Looking forward to meeting new friends and seeing gals I have already met. It is going to be a great time.

Housework and lots of yardwork. Time to bring in the hose and outdoor plants.We're getting a frost/possible freeze this weekend in Long Island NY.

Suzy, how do the tender plants survive shipping...are heat packs used? No, Jo. We more northerly growers refuse to hang up the shingle and keep on keeping on. The tender plants come in on every imaginable means. Sometimes, if it's a large order, the grower brings them on their own heated truck. I even have one of those rescheduled, because the high that day was still below freezing, and the goods expensive. They come overnight on the familiar shippers, they are picked up at airports, they even sometimes come courier. And today, we went and got THEM! The bigger wholesale growers are pretty adept at shipping them between the worst of the weather fronts and put them in what they call winter pack boxes, it's like a box, within a box, within a box. Expensive way to move perishables, but still cheaper than frozen plants. The small liners (rooted cuttings) and plugs don't seem expensive until you look at a bench of the packs and realise there is a couple thousand dollars sitting in a few square feet. Michelle, I cracked up at your description of winter madness. I have worked in those facilities and sometimes I wondered if the staff were as grounded as the clients at times. It's all relative, I guess. My cabin fever is late coming on. It usually hits in January and by this time of February I'm in spring mode, even if the weather isn't cooperating. I think I did myself an injustice by biding through January without going a little mad. I feel like a big zit about to pop when I need to be the most functional. The sun did come out for about an hour before it set. The ice was falling off the trees in big chunks. The whole d*mned property is a hard hat zone.

Don't feel bad. At least you did lift your plants and got the ponds cleaned out. I still have to do that and it has been in the 80's some days with no snow for months and months. I've been working on my gardens and lawn. I think I'll pull my filters and pump up tomorrow morning since one of the filters floated up. I did scoop some leaves off the bottom today but I really need to get the shop-vac out of the basement. I might have to forgo pulling up the potted plants. This has been the latest I've gotten around to it in 5 years, but every one of my discs in my cervical spine are bulging or herniated so I've been doing little bits at a time for months. My left hand as no feeling in it. My plants are sprouting up though - in the pond. Showing are waterlily, floating heart looks great, pickeral weed, yellow flag iris is several feet tall, and thalia starting to green, but I need to repot them all and they are too heavy to lift right now. Oh well, will stuff a few fertilizer pellets in the soil (if I can get them past the roots). I don't think I could deal with Zone 4 at all. I am thinking lately I don't even like Zone 7! Zone 9 or 10 looking better all the time with a condo with no gardens, lawn or ponds.

F is for Fooey! Hope you protected the crop as well as Anna. Not much you can do for hail, but hope it misses major damaging blows. I hope you Canadian neighbors warm up soon enough. We had to wait a couple weeks, but this has been the nicest May for planting dahlias in memory. I've already had to water which is unprecedented in my location. Back out to do more of such...

Seedmama, That sounds like a great plan to me. After tonight there is some disagreement over Tuesday and Wednesday nights. About 2 days ago both NWS and Accuweather moved the lows for both night into the upper 30's. Of course two days ago the low for tonight was still upper 30's. And now they are saying 33. Anyway they both still had it that way this morning. Then tonight the NWS has changed their forecast for both nights and raised one night up into the 50's. Accuweather is still saying the upper 30's. Hopefully it will be warmer. Unless I see something that really convinces me it will be cold those night plants will be going into the ground starting Sunday. I will put buckets around them. Had to go get a back window for my pu that the mower throw a rock through Wed evening. So while in Garden City did a little looking at the big nursery there and also at Home Depot and Wally World. The nursery owner has said earlier he would have 100 different varieties this year. Didn't have that many today. But I'm sure he may of had close to 50. And most of his plants looked good. Not great but overall as good or better than most I've seen this year. Plants a little leggy and should of been potted up a again. Ended up buying a couple of the bigger ones hoping I can get a few early ones while I'm waiting on my small ones to grow. They are saying 31 there tonight. Every experienced gardener I talked too including a Mennonite lady felt it was still too early. But every where you went you heard those that were buying and planting also. I found a couple of peppers I would like to try. But still at least 2 weeks away from time to plant them. I did end up buying a little 9 pack I felt was too cheap to pass up. Will pot them up and put them under lights as I move tomato plants out to the frames. I'll get my salt and pepper shakers filled and the bacon thawed and be waiting on the maters in June. LOL. Jay

Actually I have a good weekend planned, faint faint!

BBQ tomorrow night with a group of 20 or more.
Wedding, Sunday, in a little historical house.

I am hoping to make it to a craft fair in Redlands on Sat, one I have never been to before YAY!

My DD swims on a masters team (18years old to 90+) Sunday I am going to ride along with her to a meet at UCLA~~~I have loved watching her swim since she was 5;)

Saturday is the meetup and a wonderful lunch at Peli Peli with some new friends from the KT.

Sunday shopping, might make a trip to camping world who knows.
Getting the new tv and blu ray player and stuff set up in the RV.
If I can remember I plan to load up the slow cooker with a good soup so it will be waiting on us when we get home.

I hope I am home. I have had to run around so much this week and next week won't be much better. As far as plans, the only real plans I have are I hope is to go to church on Sunday.

This morning we are headed out for the Heart Walk. Daughter and granddog will be walking with us. We will do breakfast at a local restaurant to 'gas up' before the walk. It is about 26 degrees right now, sure hope it warms up a good bit in the next 2 hours.

Sunday is to be family applesauce making day at daughters. An annual event that will yield 80 to 90 pints of canned sauce that is divided by four households. A supper of pork and sauerkraut always follows the making of the sauce. This all occurs outside on daughters well equipped picnic shelter. Three large electric roasters and 2 canners will be used for the sauce and a couple propane heaters will keep us comfortable if needed.
