We used to live in an old farm house the open stairs to go upstairs was in the dining room. A number of times, our three cats would sit on the dining room table and in unison watch 'someone' go up the stairs. Our kitty, Baby died about two years ago and when I am in bed I can feel her footfalls walking around me. I know it isn't my now cat, Buster because he is so much larger, there is a REAL difference in their size and the feel of their footfalls.

I think so I think I saw what appeared to be an elderly woman from waist up in middle of the nite in my back bedroom,I awoke in am told hubby he basically made a fool out of me but if I close my eyes I can still see her,I only saw from waist up She had a gray bun and her hair was big,She had a bow in back blue,like an apron?

This is an "I don't know" for me. I do know some people believe in ghosts, haunting, poltergeists, etc. I don't know of any empirical proofs. I know these beliefs are not in *my* head, but that's all I know about it.

I'm not a believer. I think most things like that can be explained if you look hard enough. For instance, I know a woman who insisted that a spirit was moving her washing machine. Every time she'd use the washing machine, she'd see it had moved a little bit. She was absolutely sure it was her grandmother who had passed on trying to contact her.

But, of course, the washing machine was just off balance and moving during the spin cycle.

But they are fun stories.

I look at spirits and ghosts as fun stories. A part of me also believes that there may be some sort of science behind the ghosts like an electrical force or some other phonomenom.

We bought a brand new home, we bought it as it was being built so got to have input, it was in Germantown,TN. There was a stair case that went from the great room downstairs to the loft library upstairs which looked down upon the great room, in the loft was a door which opened into the unfinished space over the garage(we used it for storage).

Several times we and others(visitors) would see and hear that door open and then would see someone standing at the top of the stairs. It appeared to be a soldier in what looked like Civil War apparel, he was somewhat transparent. Our Great Danes would look up and bark, and get real skiddish.
It freaked the living heck out of me the first time it happened. But that is all that it did, never went any further than the top of the stairs and looked down.

After doing research on the area we discovered our subdivision was on top of a very large Civil war battle site.

I have no idea why it happened and no idea if it continued for the people that bought the house.

We had a friend that came to stay with us for a while and he was staying in one of the upstairs bedrooms, he got quite the scare a few times LOL

Absolutely I do, I know that they exist. Like Dotmom, when we lived in our other house from time to time our cats would watch someone go up and down the stairs. And this happened with our only cat Tippy as well as the cats we had after he passed. We have not had that happen here in this house.

A dear, dear friend of mine with whom I worked for several years had a black cat named Spooky (born on Halloween). When she went into a senior center we took Spooky to live out his years with us. Several years after Spooky passed away Betty told me that she had seen him in her apartment several times and she wondered if he was coming for her. It wasn't more than a week that Betty had a stroke and passed away a few days later.

Every once in awhile I hear Timmy (my kitty that I lost 7 years ago), he had a call that I would recognize anywhere. I've also felt him jump onto the bed and lie next to me, where he slept every night. It's usually when I am upset, like when I lost my mom. He was my soul cat, it only makes sense to me that he comes back when I need him.

No experiences, but this thread reminded me of a great old movie called The Uninvited starring Ray Milland. I wish I could see it for the first time again.

Nope. But I do live in a haunted house. And I saw my father and heard his voice 15 years after he died. Regardless, I do not believe in spirits or an afterlife.

I never used to believe in spirits until a few years ago when 3 members of my family (including myself) had identical "experiences" on the same night. We all live in different locations. The experience was very comforting.

No, but have had some weird things happen in my life. I've told these stories before here.

When I was a teenager, had a fever, laying in my bed at night. I woke up and saw a man standing at the foot of my bed, in an old-fashioned hat and long coat. I screamed and my dad came running in my room. Probably just the fever...or my grandfather?

When we lived across town in a rental house, I kept seeing shadows in the hallway. I'd be sitting in the living room watching tv and see it out of the corner of my eye. Brushing my teeth in the hall bathroom I'd see it again out of the corner of my eye. I never saw the shadow head on. Sometimes I thought the kids had walked by the bathroom but they were always asleep or in their rooms, not in the living room where I thought whoever had walked into. It started to bother me so much I stopped using that bathroom to get ready for bed or to get ready in the morning and started brushing my teeth in the master bathroom, which only had a tiny pedastal sink. I finally asked my neighbor, just out of curiosity if anyone had ever died in that house and she said no.

After we moved out, though, she was telling me about the couple who was fixing it up for the owners. They were in the bathroom joking about the things that my friend had told them, things I and other people saw in the house. The wife said something about how she wasn't afraid of any ghost and one of the lights exploded in there. My neighbor then fessed up and said the original owner had died in that bathroom, and every other person who lived in the house had told her they saw something in there too. She lied to me because she thought it would scare me and she's right it would have! LOL!

Before we moved out of that house we had a bad ice storm and lost power for about 5 days one winter. I was in nursing school so a friend from nursing school who lived out in the country invited me and the kids to stay with her. She lived in an old, 100+ year old farmhouse. She told me about the man who hung himself in the foyer in front of the stairs years ago. She also told me her little sister refused to sleep in their only spare bedroom upstairs. She made a pallet on the floor next to her and her husband's bed because she didn't want to be alone in another room. But, since I don't believe in stuff like that it didn't bother me to stay up there. One night we were there, though, both kids in the same bed with me sound asleep...I felt someone sit down on the end of our bed. I thought it was her cat at first but there was no cat there. I told her about it in the morning but was kinda creeped out after that. When our electric came back on she had something to do after school, her husband was still at work and so she gave me her house key to get our things by myself. It took me about 5 seconds to get my stuff out of her house, it was really creepy. Especially since she had a tanning booth thing that looked like a freaking casket right under the stairs where that man hung himself.

I'm a nurse and we had a patient die in one of the rooms near the nurses' station. For about two hours after this man died his call light kept coming on. No one in the room, nothing wrong with the call light.

I've received messages/signs from those in spirit and like Matti said, the experiences were comforting. I did have a ghostly experience in a known haunted building not long ago.. so I do believe in ghosts as well.

Yes, It runs in my family. A close friend turned on her bedroom light and my mom was sitting in a chair. My friend called me as she watched my mom who said nothing.

My friend is very, very psychic and visited me once before that experience and after she left to return to her home town she felt she needed to come back back because she felt soemthing was wrong and it was - my mother passed away suddenly. I have had many experiences like that also.

Yep, I believe also. After my first husband passed, the hall light would come on and you can hear someone walking up the steps. Also, one night I was sitting downstairs and heard something upstairs in my daughter's (who was 10 years at the time) room. A few minutes after the noise she came flying down to say her radio was dancing all over the table. I had a heck of a time trying to get her back in that room. After I did, we moved out there. Also, she kept seeing a cowboy hat on the wall. She's 34 now and still remembers.

I've only had one very negative experience that scared the crap out of me. When I was a teenager, my friends and I were interested in a "darker" subculture and used to hang out in cemeteries and things like that. One night, we were at my house playing with the Ouija board. I know better now, and I won't touch them, but when you're 16 you don't really consider the consequences.

We didn't really experience anything during the game because we were laughing and having fun with it. But later that night, after my friends left, I went to bed and woke up to a visitor at the foot of my bed. My room was dark, but this thing was the complete absence of light. It was about 7 feet tall, solid and black as sin. Just standing there at the foot of my bed staring at me. My two cats were sleeping on my bed and they both jumped up, hissing and ran for the closed door and clawed desperately at it trying to get out. I sat straight up and screamed, and at that moment it sort of dissolved into glitter and then shot under my bed.

Upon further reflection, I think I invited something very negative into my house and I was relieved to move out soon after.

To counter that, after my mom died, I had a few pleasant experiences. My mom wore the same perfume her entire life so I immediately associate it with her. I also collect perfumes and she knows I have a huge collection. A few weeks after she died, I noticed a small bottle of her perfume on the floor so I absently put it on a dresser in the guest room. The next day, I went in there and the perfume was on the floor again. I didn't think much of it assuming the cats had knocked it down so I put it back up, and then the next day, it was on the floor again. I thought this was really strange, so then I put it back up, right in the middle so it couldn't accidentally fall off and the cats couldn't easily knock it off, and put a bottle of my perfume right next to it. And then the next day, I come into the room and both bottles are on the floor. Now, it could have been the cats but I doubt it. Just something fun and it made me smile.

Another really strange thing that happened was a few months ago, I really wanted to relocate from Boston to California. But it meant leaving a good job, leaving my apartment and leaving my friends, and I was really struggling with whether it was the right move for me or not. And I landed an interview with a company out in California, and while I was doing some internet research on the company, I Googled the company name and one of the people who works there and the 3rd result that popped up was my mom's name, which is pretty unique and not at all related to any of the search terms. I just thought it was really cool and I interpreted it as a sign. After that, everything fell in place. And now I'm here in California. :)

linda6, that experience with the light has happened to my neighbor and when her husband was alive he kept turning a light over a picture off before he went to bed early. I sat with her after his passing and, sure enough, it happened in front of us and then for awhile after that when she was alone.

that you got what you needed from that. I think you have to be open to those experiences.

Another weird thing that happened to me was a week or two before my sister passed, my husband (2nd husband) and I both heard someone whistle very loud. This happened in the middle of the night. It woke both of us up. He flew out of bed to see if someone broke in and there was no one there. We heard it again a few nights later. Wonder if someone wanted our attention?

I'm not a total believer, but I'm not in total denial of the possibility either. There's too many things that have happened that can't be explained away that suggests at least a possibility of something else out there that we can't understand.

A couple of things that have happened:

After my mother died I think I may have had a visit of sorts one night. Yes it could have been a dream but I know that when I sat up I have never had a feeling of peace and understanding and no longer was nervous or upset about her death.

My dog was a biscuit lover but he was also one who'd put a biscuit away for a rainy day. He'd hide treats and when he wanted one he'd go help himself if he couldn't con me out of one, though admittedly it was easy for him to do. I know he hid a lot of things in the basement from his favorite toys (tennis balls) to rawhide chews to biscuits. Months after his death I'd find dog biscuits laying in the middle of the basement floor, right in the path where I'd walk to the laundry area. First couple of times I attributed it to it being on a shelf and getting knocked off somehow, but I still can't explain the positioning, several feet from the nearest shelf. Nobody else lived with me at the time. And an occasional tennis ball shows up to this day in the living room.

My cat sits and stares into space and the head turns and looks toward the steps and upstairs. She'll sit an look upstairs too. Occasionally she'd be upset but now for the most part, just watching. Sometimes I'd write it off as a bug or something flying around, but who knows.

I do kind of hope there is some type of afterlife where I could haunt some people... But that's probably just wishful thinking!

I have always loved ghost stories even when I was a little girl and I have really enjoyed this thread a lot!!

I have had a few experiences myself. One was with a friend of mine said her childhood home was haunted and that they always heard some footsteps on the stairway to the basement. Her sister's bedroom light would also turn itself on and off. We went to visit her mother and stayed at that house and there was a really strong smell of dog on that stairway (her family didn't have a dog) and when we went to sleep that night we heard the light switch in her sister's bedroom switch on! (Ghosts kind of like me!)

When I was a kid my friend Judy lived in an old house and we would always hear someone walking around who wasn't there. It had old creaky floor boards and we would hear them creaking.

One more for now. I had a very difficult childhood with a drunkard father and crazy family. The only person I really trusted was my grandmother, who I was very close to. She died when I was 34. One day a few weeks after she died I was just so sad I flopped down on my bed and cried my eyes out. She came to me and looked so happy and at peace. She told me she was okay and that she loved me very much.

In a house my parents bought the man who had owned it had a heart attack while running a bath. He died and wasn't found for over 2 days, the water kept running and did so much damage to the walls and ceiling below we got the house for really cheap. My dad is an amazing rehabber, and we bought the house with all the man's belongings in it, sans what his family wanted.

The man was a podiatrist. The house stood empty for over two years before my parents bought it, and one late night my dad was working in the house in the man's office. He opened a drawer and there was a human skeletal foot. He was startled, but that gave way when that same moment the man's vintage hardwired phone rang right next to him.

There was no phone line turned on to the house.

Dotmom, I feel my Frankie (my big Ragdoll kitty who passed away 2 years ago) walk on the bed at night when all three other cats are closed out of our bedroom. Sometimes I will have made the bed and then find pawprints walked across the bed when no cat has been in there yet.

Michelle, that's funny about the foot! Like the guy was playing a joke on your Dad! That cracks me up!!! What a wild house!!!
