Need an answer about Aarp Insurance application

I decided to join Gardenweb and post, after a couple of years of enjoying reading all of your posts.

Right now, I need to ask...does anyone know where I can get an Aarp Membership application??...The hospital here doesn't have them...

My husband's retirement plan where he worked, changed hands

with short notice, and now it's Aarp and a new Medicare supplement plan...

Aarp's web site states that it takes 2 weeks to receive your membership card...We don't have a credit card, and need it filled out sooner... We were never members.

I hate for him to lose out on the opportunity for medical

coverage, He has Medicare part A and B.

Does anyone know where we could pick up an Aarp Membership Application? (echo)

I'm biting my nails.

When I had my roof replaced due to wind, The adjuster gave me an estimate, and the roofer gave me an estimate, and they were about the same. I had to mail the paid receipt to the insurance company, and then they issued a check written out to me and a credit union, where I have a line of credit approved, though no amount is owed. Some things were higher on the roofers estimate, and some things lower. He substituted a ridge vent in place of some electric ones I had. Is it the case usually that if you put in a replacement that cost less than $x, they don't pay you the additional value (just what you actually replace)? True, they won't give you any more than what is actually spent. How much latitude do you have to reach $x but going cheaper on some components and more on others? (Say I found some great tile cheaper than what I had, but want a sink more expensive than what I had, and the whole project still equals $x. They don't say "you can only be reimbursed for a sink up to $a and a toilet up to $b," do they?) I don't imagine they care, since I doubt if they have 'exact costs on what your existing fixtures cost new, but I'd ask them just to be sure.

gibby -- There was a reduced-benefit clause in the LTC policies we took, too. I was wrong when I wrote that we took them 15 years ago. It was 20! Also, we had to pay in for TEN years, not TWO, to (possibly) get something back. We'd paid in $11,000 in premiums at the end of ten years. This was a group LTC policy from Hancock, offered to us by my DH's then-employer. After ten years we became eligible for reduced-amount benefits. Each policy will pay $45/day for *skilled nursing care*, to a lifetime max of $82,000. The verbiage on any other type of care is obscure with lots of hoops and mazes. Looking at it now, I think we will have aided tbe taxpayer -- seems to me these benefits would reduce the cost of our care to Medicare. If I'd had any doubts about problems collecting on the policies, they were sustained when it took me six months to get a letter from Hancock stating that each of us had actually qualified for this reduced-benefit coverage. We eventually received single-page letters, undated and without signatures, with a lot of 'may qualify' and 'could be' phrasing. Their legal department could send us packing without breaking a sweat. Our situation is different than yours as to probable need for the policy. I'm glad you'll take that opt-out clause. You might want to see a letter stating exactly what YOUR reduced benefits will be, specific to YOUR policy and YOUR premiums, before you sign up.

I have a self employed artist friend who saves money by getting her medical coverage through a small business association. Your parents might look into this while they are still working. $2500.00 doesn't seem like a very high deductible to me. Perhaps your parents could put this money in a tax-exempt health savings account where it can earn interest until they need it. If you go through AARP, keep in mind that they will sell your information to Pharmaceutical companies for marketing purposes. We still own our last house, and not because we want to! We moved out of that house on Thanksgiving weekend of 2005 and spent the winter getting in shape to sell - taking off wallpaper, fixing the bathroom ceiling, cleaning, painting and mouse-proofing the basement, putting flooring on the steps to the basement, and painting the whole main floor. Then we had the original wood floors refinished. March 1, 2006 it went up for sale at $160,000. A year and a half later, we got our first offer, a rent-to-own situation for $140,000. Because she had credit problems to fix, we did a 2 year lease before purchase. By that time rolled around, the house was not worth the contracted price and the deal fell thorough. Going price for a house like ours? $85,000. This is where the insurance comes into play. We are paying high-cost landlord insurance. The agent told me that he is being told to stop the insurance on all empty houses! If we could not find a new tenant, we would have an empty, uninsured house. Luckily, we had my father-in-law's caregiver and her husband ready to move in. Part of the deal I made with her to get her to return to Michigan and resume her caregiving for Dad was that she could live in our old house at the same price she had paid to rent the two=bedroom apartment they had here before going back to Florida. So I am getting about half of the cost to keep up the house each month in rent, but am glad to have someone in the house at all. I told the agent that I would move back to the house before losing the insurance. It is only 5 minutes from my work. I could see DH on weekends and I could keep one of the three dogs we have there with me at the old house. There is so much vandalism of empty houses that insurance companies are no longer insuring vacant home in the Detroit area. ML, we have a high deductible, I thought - $1000. I have never heard of a deductible by percentage. How does it work? I agree that oceanside and barrier island properties should not be insurable if it means that we all have to help pay when they are destroyed. I expect to hear that a lot more areas join that list as global warming changes weather patterns. Places like Paterson NJ or the area around the Red River in North Dakota might not be insurable soon.

I don't have a printer...
I will call the membership card number tomorrow. Will likely be closed.
If I just had an application, because the Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans state:...If you are not an AARP Member,please include your AARP Membership Application and a check or money order for your annual Membership dues with this application.

Your local library will have a magazine most likely a computer and some kind of printing capability. Most libraries have hours on weekends. Good luck. And welcome to our table. Nanny

I have an AARP Medicare Prescription policy(because Aetna has been banned by PA from writing any new policies)...and I do NOT belong to AARP. Their Medicare policies are from United Health.

MUST you get coverage through AARP? That seems odd.

Our Medicare booklet for 2011 just arrived in the mail yesterday. It lists all the licensed Medicare Secondary Carriers and Drug Supplement plans in our area -- pages and pages of possibilities.

Is there a senior center in your town with an advisor? Have you spoken with the hospital's social services department? What plans does your MD accept?

Do you pay the premiums or does your hubby's retirement plan do so. I think the only way you can get the insurance is join, and I am surprised that a retirement plan would be able to offer such a plan. Please at least check you a local independant agent and/or like one poster said, with Social Security. You have some good suggestion here to help you out. As far as I know AARP does not offer insurance plans, but do offer supplements only, as Medicare, if you have it, is your primary provider. Is your husband's retirement a big company--small etc and what else do they provide (insist) the retires do. We are with Los Angeles County and we can choose anyone we want as our supplements. Please feel free to ask questions as we do have a lot of very knowlegable people here.
