I think her pictures are remarkable for a beginner, think how good she'll be 6 months from now? The color in each is also outstanding.

Although the last photo has a different pixel count, 1000 x 664, all photos ahve the same aspect ration, 1.5, therefore, I assume that none of thees were cropped and that the pixel count was due to how these photos were uploaded to photobucket. All other photos have pixel count of 900 x 598.

The composition of numbers 1,2, & 4 are good. The 3rd photo is a difficult subject due to the wide range of light coming off the objects. Reflection off the water is bright and the dark reflected images interferes somewhat with the main subject. A polarizer could have helped this scene. The trees are nice, but I bet the photographer was dissapointed with the results. The photo does not record what the eye saw, because the eye can rove around and the brain will intregrate many elements for the observer tending one to see more beauty than what a rigid camera format records. I think shot #3 is just the "average" record shot and can be improved. It needs a different view point. I suggest that the photographer move around a bit and take a number of shots. Try different focal lengths (make use of the zoom). Sometimes, a small change in the viewing angle with respect to the light source will make a big difference. Doing this will help train the eye for assessing a scene. That's the beauty of digital photography. Blown or mediocre shots can be erased without a cost penality. It takes a little getting used to this idea if you had trainned with film where cost was on your mind. Tell her to take more shots and then cull later.

Photos 1,2, &4 are good.

1 and 2 are just beautiful!

Love the first one, the way the white hat brings the eye first to her face and then the beautiful textures in the barn and then on to the calf and her dress. Yes, she's a born natural. You're bringing out the artist in her.

I think the pictures are fine. The girl could be a little more to the right in the first one. The number of sheep in the 2nd one is even number.. although they are broken up into odd numbers. Don't overly like the 3rd one. Not realy seeing much in the 4th one but just a close up shot. Nature is beautiful -- Is she bringing out the beauty or could anyone take these shots with a decent camera on a beautiful day?

I think she could easily be a good photography but I'm not going to tell you her pictures are awesome or that I'm seeing some remarkable talent in those pictures. I think a lot of people could have taken those especially if they had your camera, a great backdrop, and pulled the 4 best pictures from the 100 pictures they took.

If she only took 4 pictures, it may impress me more...but if she took 100 and these are her 4 best (as I'm understanding), then I'd have a different opinion.

That statement is entirely untrue. Having a professional camera will no more make you a good photographer than buying a stethoscope would make you a nurse.

To a trained photographer a camera is nothing more than a tool of the trade, nothing more, nothing less, and regardless of whether we are shooting a modern DSLR with all the automated bells and whistles or using a 1960 vintage point & shoot camera, we can still get the same results as long as we stay within the operating parameters of the camera.

In fact, I have yet to see anything that can be done with a digital camera that cannot be done with a film camera, but there is a long list of things you can do with a film camera that cannot be done with a digital.

It sounds like you didn't want honest opinions if they aren't the same as yours...

You just want to be told she takes great pictures... So, I'm sorry; They are all awesome!

From a purely artistic point of view...IMO...she's a natural and has a good eye for composition. I like them all and disagree with Jemdandy about # 3. Color wise...it's a busy scene...but that's to be expected at this time of the year and at the chosen location. I like the fact that she framed the view by allowing the trunk of the tree to define the right hand margin. It gives the viewer...in a more romantic light...the feeling of peeking through the trees to catch a look at the pond.

As an artist, I always find it very difficult to critique another's work....as art is in the eye of the beholder. But...with that qualifier...I would give your "pupil" a gold star. She has a wonderfully natural eye.

Tell her to stick with it. She's doing great. If she's this good now, she'll only get better.

I'm no expert, but I don't know how the pictures could've been any better. They're all beautiful. Better watch out or the student will be teaching the teacher! ;-)

I know absolutely "nothing" about photography,composition or which camera takes the best pic.

I "do",however,know what I like,and I like those shots-be it by Jan or whoever....fine job!

To me, a great photo is a photo that makes me feel something. It doesn't have to be technically perfect, but it has to draw me in. And the above photos definitely do that.

The third picture is my favorite!

I don't care what kind of camera a person has, not everyone can take a good picture. I think Jan has talent. I love the contrast of the colors in all of the pictures. Number three is my favorite. Number 1 is my second favorite.

Well, just to clarify... I didn't say just the camera...the OP only partially quoted me in his/her response making my opinion appear all about the camera. I said...
