The shelves.... We originally wanted a 30" x 12" niche but when we opened up the wall, there was a septic vent smack in the middle. We decided on 2 niches instead, I wassn't about to mess around with those pipes. When figuring the tile layout for the design I wanted, our friend suggested that we oversize the niches so the tile would lay out nice - he suggested 18 x 18 niches and I freaked. But the 12x12 would not have been big enough for the 3 kids and all their stuff. He suggested a granite shelf on the bottom and then one above it to make a shelf for soap, razors, etc. We talked about the length and width of the shelves, but never the depth. When I picked up the shelves from the granite fabricator, I freaked - they were 1 1/4" thick just like the countertop was being made. Friend said, don't worry, they would be perfect. They are. I honestly wouldn't want them any thinner. When he laid the tile, the bottom shelf slid in tightly and then he cut the bullnose on the side and the back tiles so the top granite shelf sits on the cut tiles all around. The tiles abouve the top shelf are full 6 x 6 and as you can see, we have enough height for those huge oversized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is kerdi behind so no worries about water issues and they were all caulked and all afterwards. Being the over-emotional one, I figured this design that had been in head my for 2 years was ruined when I saw how thick those shelves were, but I wouldn't want them any different. I think they 'fit' the design perfectly as is. And I just love the niches. Before, the kids had a tiny corner shelf and bottles were all over the place, now there is enough room for everything plus space for guests when they are here.

please let you doctor know if anything with your child is out of the norm. I have a newly one year old and since birth he sweats excessivly when theres no need. the bed soaks and he goes through clotheslike a wet diaper.It also isnt all the time but its enough to be concerned. I asked everyone (doctors, other moms) i looked on the web. until he turned one i found out he has Neuroblastoma a tumor near his adrenal gland. i found out one he one year old check up because the doctors felt a lump that they thought was a swollwn kidney. (the same doctors that wasnt to concerned about his sweating) They ordered a ultrra sound and xray and they was sure it was a tumor. He then go a ct-scan and confirmed a tumor which they had to sadate him for. Please Please dont take sweating, a racy heart, unexplained non weight gain lightly. If your doctors dont think its a concern push then to satisfy for mind. get a xray a ultra sound if they wont go to a clinic, get help to pay for it. tumors are cancerous and deadly. please. Good morning, everyone! allison, The 1/2 bath might be considered a 'folly' down there! I do have a small area around it somewhat finished, but the rest of it will always be a spot to work on my many hobbies, like furniture refinishing, messy crafty stuff, you-name-it. I also have a doggie door in the opposite 'working' side of the cellar, that goes to a former garage under my office, which I made that into a wood working 'shop' years ago. Another doggie door in the shop takes them out to their fenced in area of the yard. The cellar and the shop are valuable real estate to me, just as they are. I do have 3 windows and a door with glass in that 'living' part of the cellar, as well as a wood stove, and an armoire with a TV it in. It's cozy in the winter with the stove, and cool in the summer and the couch down there is great for naps! These pics are of my former LR sofa down there and a 'reading' nook with big chair. Not much decorating has taken place yet! The door you see on the right in this pic is to the 1/2 bath. This is the reading nook which faces the wood stove. Being a dog lover, I got this original oil painting of a Springer from eBay for $21.49! His eyes are a perfect match to the Behr 'Cork' paint color. And this is Ikat fabric called Casbah, that I got at 1/2 price at Ballard Designs. I might make sill length panels for the 1/2 bath for fall and winter from it. The way it goes with that paisley wallpaper is the stuff that (my) dreams are made of. I'm happy to see so many paisley lovers here, as I have always been one, and I LOVE to mix patterns in a room, even a small one like this. I'm glad that others are inspired by my 're-cycled' bathroom! I'd never have done it if there hadn't been a rough one down there to start; but I just replaced that with one that even I'll use. No more storing tires and hoses in this one.

I have this same problem. The kitchen has a walkpath adjacent to it which leads to garage and front lobby and basement stairs. We call it the "kitchen hall." DH does auto restoration and both of us are gardeners. Auto garage substances, garden dirt, and Labrador paws all create mess inside the house here and it needs to be stopped before we enter kitchen hall or balance of house. Deep into the project, I wanted the entire walkpath alongside kitchen to be tile and only the inside of the kitchen addition to be wood. This would have put stools at peninsula on a tile floor too--no fear of scratches! But...we ended up putting tile into the kitchen hall only as far as the desk unit which faces the basement stair area. Beyond this is the peninsula stool area, floor done in oak. We cut off the tiles in a line across the walkpath and put a horizontal piece of oak along the straight edge of the cut tiles perpendicular to the walkpath and then the new oak flooring runs parallel to the peninsula and walkpath and perpendicular to the oak divider. We wanted to downplay the transition so the oak board is not decorative. We did same at junction between tile and other floors, which are oak--a perpendicular piece of gorgeous oak that runs across side to side now fills a former outside door threshold. Same for top of stairway and entrance to dining room. Good looking but no ta-dah to call attention to itself. I have put Ikea stick-on felt bumpers at bottom of all table legs and stool legs which sit on the oak floor and so far it's worked (11 months) but I have to be diligent in knocking sand and such out of the felt when it accumulates there. Despite 3 rugs which lie between the front door and the working kitchen, there is a trail of dirt within the kitchen right now--I've been gardening. Gotta reassure myself that this is not a sign of anything bad, it's just how life will be when there's no formal front door and when real people and a dog live here. We shake rugs frequently and I sweep frequently but life goes on. The working kitchen part of the floor is oak--easier on feet than tile is and there is no ht or texture difference in threshold at the junction of kitchen hall and dining room with another oak floor--better for when I carry plates and trays past the peninsula and into the dining room than if the floor change were there. Sorry I don't have photos. Here's the desk area...imagine the junction just to right of desk. Photographer is standing by basement stairwell. Stools are to the right. Oak floor begins just where the peninsula Formica begins on right. Putting tile on an angle made the front hall a little more interesting. This tile camouflages dog hair--a benefit! [speculative mode on] This report is from 11 month vantage. Hope I continue to like the oak floor in kitchen. I started out with vinyl, excuse me, "resilient flooring" throughout the kitchen, halls, and lobby in my plan and once in a while I still wonder if I would have found it better in the long run. And...I could have called the installers and had it done in short order; this took us weeks of DIY and as I said, eternal vigilance is the price of oak floor.
