do you have a can of ocean spray cranberry sauce in your pantry?

Maybe left over from last Thanksgiving?

I bought one today--it looks smaller (like so many other things in the grocery story, I know!).

Mine is 14 ounces. What's yours?

(Darn grocery store only had Ocean Spray--no store brand! I know my primary grocery store would have had "generic" or store brand, def. cheaper!)

It's 14 ounces. Has that stupid can design that only opens on the bottom so you cannot push it through like you used to be able to.

Not at the moment, but I used to be able to buy cranberry sauce in the small cans, perfect for just the two of us. I wish cranberry sauce would come in the little cups like apple sauce. I would definitely keep that on hand in the pantry.
As for getting less and less product for the same or even more money. It is disgraceful and sneaky. More fleecing of America.

I just realized that I didnÂt include the procedure I used or the yield when I posted the ingredients earlier. IÂll try this one more time incase anyone wants to use it. Habanero Cranberry Jelly Ingredients: 3/4 cup cider vinegar 3/4 cup white vinegar 2 cups 100% unsweetened cranberry juice 1/2 cup finely diced habanero pepper 1/2 cup finely diced red onion 1 3/4 cups fresh cranberries, coarsely chopped 1 pkg liquid pectin 5 cups sugar Procedure: Finely dice peppers and onion and coarsely chop cranberries In a large sauce pan, combine cranberries, pepper, onion, vinegars, and juice Bring to a boil and reduce heat to low Simmer 15 Â 20 minutes to allow flavors to blend and to soften up cranberries Add sugar and return to a hard boil for 1 minute Remove from heat and stir liquid pectin in well Add jelly to hot sterilized jars Wipe rim of jars with a clean damp towel Position lids as per usual instructions Process in a hot water bath for 10 minutes Remove jars and allow them to cool During the cooling, periodically "gently" invert jars to distribute solids. Yield 7 or 8 - 250ml (1 cup) jars (Zeppy, did another batch today... now I have 15 jars for personal use and giifting)

I cook a lot so I have doubles and even triples of every size cookware I use, plus 25 yrs ago I moved in with six sets of dinnerware and three sets of flatware. I have three separate spice drawers because I cook everything from Indian to Chinese to French and half a dozen other cuisines. It was my first (and so far only, thank goodness) opportunity to design a kitchen, so I crammed in all the storage I could. We were handicapped by only having 1 wall of uppers. One half-wall holds the frig and is open to the LR and DR. The other wall has floor-to-ceiling windows to capture a great hillside view: I worked with graph paper and managed to get everything behind doors. It was about a week before I realized I had FORGOTTEN to put in any food storage! I did have three narrow closets in the DR (a former bedrm) for the upright freezer, the microwave and wine stemware, and the table linens/vacuum/stepladder. But nothing for dried pasta, Asian condiments, dried mushrooms, cans of soup, etc. So.....we had fortunately not placed the order for the kitchen cabs yet. Two 18" wide pantry units were hastily added, and placed in-between the DR and kitchen. The top doors hide fixed shelves, the bottom doors hide rollouts. All are height adjustable, heavy-duty. I'd never had a pantry before. Now I'm spoiled and can't imagine living w/o one! A walk-in would be nice, but there's only two of us so not really needed. Ten years later I had a handyman built us a custom storage unit for our indoor back porch area. It was such a pain carrying the vacuum up and down stairs, I finally broke down and bought a second upright. I don't have any good photos of it, but half is deep enough for the vacuum and BBQ tools, about 12". The other half has shallow, 7" shelves that store dry goods like spray paints (for DH's hobby), DW tablets, Brita filters, vacuum cleaner bags, etc.

CRANBERRY PUDDING CAKE Preheat oven to 350 degrees 9 x 9 x 2 inch I used corningware or pyrex MIX 1/2 Cup white sugar 1 Cup flour 1/2 tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder 1 or more cups of whole cranberries either fresh or frozen ADD 1 egg 3/4 cup of milk blend together and add to dry mixture MIX gently til all is blended. Drop by spoonful as you would dumplings into the hot sauce SAUCE 2 Cups of VERY HOT Water 1 Cup brown sugar 2 tbsp butter 1 tsp vanilla you can the zest of an orange if you like BAKE until cake floats to the top of the pudding and becomes golden brown.

Reporting back--I decided to use a melon baller instead of cutting the jelly into cubes, then sprinkled the fruit with chia seeds and skipped the walnuts. The mint leaves were all frozen, so I used celery leaves: I used the leftovers of the cranberry jelly, mixed with pineapple juice, to glaze the ham. It was delicious! My impressions of canned cranberry jelly: It was very bland, compared to my homemade relish, but the tart and sweet fruit gave the salad enough punch. It was very refreshing with the baked ham. I wouldn't eat the jelly alone, but the texture is perfect if you want to spread it on a sandwich, which I don't. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Here is my Cranberry Relish Recipe For A Crowd, for lovemrmewey: 4 12oz packages fresh cranberries, rinsed 1 tsp minced candied ginger or 1/2 tsp ground ginger 3 cups sugar (I short each cup by a couple of tablespoons) 4 6oz packages of gelatin--any red or orange--I use red raspberry 2 20oz cans crushed pineapple, drained (reserve liquid) 4 11oz-15oz cans mandarin oranges, drained (reserve liquid) 2 tart apples, finely chopped zest of one orange, or 2Tbs OJ concentrate Make gelatin using the reserved liquid from the pineapple and mandarin oranges, with enough water added to complete the instructions. Chill until almost set--thick but not solid. While gelatin is chilling, cook 3 packages of the cranberries with 3 cups water and sugar. Cool. Grind the cooked cranberries with the remaining uncooked cranberries. I use a blender for this step. Cranberries can be cooked the night before and allowed to cool overnight in fridge. Mix the almost set gelatin, cranberry mixture, drained fruit, and orange zest. Chill until set. Keeps well for several days, and can be frozen. Always have a couple of the smallest cans in the refrigerator - we eat a lot of turkey, and DH has to have his cranberry sauce.

We love cranberry sauce, so I always have a few cans in the pantry. Yes, they are making the cans smaller...but the price did not decrease. I hate the design of the cans because I always just pushed it through.

I wrote to Ocean Spray when they changed the design of the cans, but they just said to run a knife around the inside of the can and it would slide out. It does, but that wasn't the way my mother taught me! At least they were nice, and sent me coupons for free products.

I've got one left over from last Thanksgiving and it's 16 ounces. It's Ocean Spray Whole Berry cranberry sauce. Now they have an illustration on the back of the can to show how to swipe a knife around the sauce to get it out of the can. The can touts the healthful benefits of the sauce but the second ingredient, behind cranberries, is high fructose corn syrup. Go figure.

My hackles went up increasingly as I read this thread. It is so annoying when they decrease the size of items, it messes up my recipes (and if the Breyer's ice cream box gets any smaller, they may as well sell it in single-serving containers). I wish they'd just leave the size/amount alone and simply raise the price when they want to implement price increases!!

But even worse, they put HFCS in everything these days. And with cranberries, it's not like you can make it from scratch every time, as fresh cranberries are not available year-round.

Another option... It's super easy to make your own canberry sauce from fresh or frozen berries... then you can make only as much as you need, and avoid the hfcs.

I make my own from fresh cranberries for the holidays, but the canned, jellied OC is DH's "junk food" necessity.
Got to let them win one...once in a while.

Vala: Turkey (either leftover roasted, or even from the deli) + cranberry sauce + a bit of horseradish sauce = yum! (Many folks will use cream cheese, but I like the bite of horseradish sauce.)

The knife technique just sounds wrong: I want to see those ridges in the jellied sauce when it comes out of the can! It reminds me of my Mom's "cooking" techniques! But the new cans don't really have the ridges anymore.
