Train collision here ....

This is just terrible. Here in Calif, in the valley, Chatsworth a metrolink passenger train collided head on with a freight train. What a sad mess this is. They are showing dead bodies being brought out with cranes...the poor deceased are dangling from this crane and they aren't cutting away from it! This is an awful sight! I wish I hadn't seen that. They really need to not show something so graphic on the news. This is sickening. So far they have 4 dead and dozens injured. By the looks of the mess I'd say there will be more deceased. It's just awful.

I just saw it on TV a few minutes ago....sometimes(often)the media goes way too far......they should show some respect for the victims and their families.
My heart goes out to the victims and family and friends.
Also prayers for all my Texas friends.

Three hours or so have passed since the crash. What a mess. Some have been able to get out by themselves, in spite of injuries. They've used the jaws of life and other equipment to open up the smashed parts.

Still no clear report on how the accident happened.

LOL right now you wouldn't even be able to see the tracks...we have gotten about 8 inches of snow in the past 24 hours and the plows haven't even gotten to the main roads here in town...Nothing like Kirk and Carol have been dealing with, but more than they can seem to figure out how to deal with.

When to drop collision coverage?

Hi Pipersville Carol (if you're still around), If, having dropped the coverage of $800.00 annually three years ago, you'd *really* self-insured, that is, hung on to the fee that you'd paid previously, you'd have had $2,400. in savings, plus a smidgeon extra, interest rates being what they've been, lately. As a financial advisor, I told lots of clients ... and others who'd listen ... that it would be well for them to build a financial cushion of three - six months' income, so that they wouldn't be sweating blood in about a month in case their current income disappeared. Even better, in the recent uncertain economic climate, to have nine months' to a year's income on hand. I don't always have it myself ... but I have a (rarely used) credit card to cover the current cost, and an (also rarely used) line of credit at the bank, fully secured by stock certificates for a lower rate of interest, which I draw on to pay off the credit card debt in full at the next billing date, to avoid that 18% or so interest rate (or something like 28% if you have to use a store-issued card). Then to pay down the line of credit as quickly as possible, especially as the interest is not deductible. I think that I wrote a post either here or in "Money Saving Tips" asking whether the readers had ever been in handcuffs. Some of the readers, knowing my rather quirky sense of humour, wondered whether they were in for some sexually-related story ... but ... many people are in financial handcuffs, lacking a financial cushion. And ... they've put them on themselves! And if they have major debts, e.g. credit card, they're in leg irons, as well. These are troubling times in our countries ... few have received substantial wage increases in years, and one can find almost no one to suggest that, for most of us, that's about to change any time soon. But the prices keep going up ... and the official rate of about 2% annual rate seems somewhat suspect, if you've visited a grocery store in recent times. Few figure that such is about to change, any time soon, either. So - we'd better get used to living on less. Less troublesome for me, to be 85 two days from now, than for you who are younger, with more years to plan for and (most likely) live. Good wishes for a great New Year. May it bring the fulfillment of some of your dreams ... and the envisioning of some worthwhile new ones. ole joyful

Anyone in WA or Vancouver? Train Trip here I come

Debby_ab, I don't think we will be. I'm not real sure of the route we are taking. I know there will be a couple hour stop in Winipeg about 10pm. If we do it would probably be a brief stop. We wouldn't be able to get off of the train. Two.24acres, thanks for the suggestion. I will keep it in mind to future reference. This time I want local shops so the yarn becomes a souvenir. If I get sock yarn I can say the yarn for these socks came from ..... When we took a trip...... I write on the labels where it came from so I know when it's time for that project. Tami

woodie, they only open the train, for free, to play, once in a while. You pay to join the game site and play it whenever you desire. That's why when you see someone posting about the train it because you can play it for free for a while, before they close it again.

I'll put a link to one report. There are 18 confirmed fatalities but they can see several bodies inside that they haven't been able to retrieve yet.

I can't imagine what I'd be going through if my loved one had been on one of the trains.

The crash occurred right next to homes, and many residents ran out immediately and helped rescue passengers.

Here is a link that might be useful: news report

This accident is very near to where I live. On my way home from work yesterday I was sitting at a red light and I watched this train going over the bridge in front of me. I really started noticing after the first car had passed and I was watching the people on the train sitting at the windows . I stopped at the market and while unloading the groceries at home I turned on the TV. Shocked is an understatement! Prayers for these people and their families.

Oh my! They are saying the Engineer was text messaging and ran a red light - running into an oncoming freight train.

This is so terrible - if that is indeed the case, it was his fault for texting. Will people ever learn you CAN NOT do that!!

So many deaths and serious injuries. Just terrible.

Susanjf,
We got the metrolink in 2001 that starts at Union Station and I believe it goes into Oxnard. Commuter runs a few times a day. I don't know if you remember Chandler Blvd that runs across the San Fernando Valley, it used to have train tracks but now they've made it into a bus line that runs the valley like the metrolink. I haven't had to use either yet but it is a step in the right direction for the area.
That accident was just so awful! I can't believe the guy driving the train was TEXTING!!!! although I saw the video of the kids cellphone message from him on the news. So so sad.
