I'm so glad that is just an ad. It does drive home a point and still some people tend to txt and drive. IDIOTS

I have been know to get very irate at people txtng and drvng! When one young girl banged into my rear end at a stop sign and then continued txtng I got out walked over to her window, she rolled it down, I just took her phone, dropped it on the ground and stomped it to pieces. Her home was just a few blocks away and her brother saw the accident. He went to get Mom. Dad showed up and he was real upset she had her cell phone out when she drove into me. I told him what I had done and why. He said "No problem I was going to do it myself. She won't be needing it for a while and if she gets another its coming out of her pocket. This is the second accident she has been in while on that (vulgar explicative) thing." I wonder if the girl learned a lesson this time.? They had great insurance and it must cost a fortune by now.

Good for you lil and I think you were lucky her family felt the same.

There was a girl killed in our city because she was on the cell and pulled out in front of a truck on a highway. Her father was on the news saying something about that being a lesson to other young people. Pretty high price for a lesson.

You are supposed to turn off phones and all electronics (that have on/off switch) during take-off and landing. After that you are allowed to use any electronic device that does not transmit. (I believe at a certain altitude you lose connectivity to any cell phone towers anyway) Even though you are supposed to turn OFF phones, you would be surprised at how many I have heard ring during descending/landing. Knowing you are going to crash...well I would try like mad to call and talk to someone. My phone would be turned on, and I would try and try and try to get a signal. Texting can be done and sent without a signal, it will not transmit until one is found. BTW - I think it is highly unlikely that any cell phone frequency can interfere with air traffic transmissions....but I'll play by the rules. I think turning things off has more to do with being able listen to direction and not have clutter in your lap or the aisle in case of emergency.

Texting, like phones, instant messaging and email has its place but for me it's not much I need it. The last few nights it's been rather late and a couple people wanted me to call them. I am very, well often overly-courteous/cautious, depending on how you look at it about calling people at what for them would be odd hours. I know some people for whom 3pm would be interrupting their sleep. Anyway, I sent a text to them and asked if it was a good time to call. One sent back immediately and I called. But I usually use Yahoo Instant Messenger and the computer to send my text messages rather than a phone. First because it's free and my phone isn't and secondly I can use a standard keyboard. Texting while driving is bad, no doubt, but there's also another one that's never mentioned and that's GPS units. Punching in stuff on that is as bad as texting. I like instant messaging and email. It's far less rude than anything to do with a phone. And I take issue with anyone saying that it's less disruptive than a phone call. First there's the ring like a phone, then people instinctively grab it immediately - they can't wait, after all, someone sent them a text!!! and of course bring it up, read it and often there has to be an answer. Just the other night a friend from work got a new apartment and was kind of excited. His first place on his own and he's new to town and wanted to show it off. So I went downtown, spent nearly 40 minutes driving around trying to find a parking spot since the place has no assigned parking. Then when I parked about 1/3 mile from it and walked to his place, and believe me, these days with my legs, that's not easy. Well I got there and we were talking and it was less than 20 minutes before his *$#m phone started chiming away. A friend was having problems and wanted to "chat". I finally said why don't you just give him a call and I'll leave. And I did. What a waste of time. For all of us. However there's been a time or two I send a text with some quick info with no response needed. I tell people not to respond unless required if it comes from my phone, since I get charged. Don't care if it's while I'm on instant messenger. So it has its place but like most anything, it gets abused and when it's misused, it can be dangerous.

In other words, no one should ever have another occupant in the vehicle unless the additional occupant(s) is/are gagged, because any conversation is distracting and dangerous. Actually, any conversation *is* distracting and dangerous. That's why I make people in my car shut up sometimes. And it's why I stop chatting with a driver when the traffic gets a little bit busy. But I think there's something about texting that is extra frightening. Texting has a pressure to answer that's really, really high. And it takes you FAR away from the road in ways that chatting doesn't. Your attention and your field of vision change so far. As for texts actually being important--honestly, what will change if you don't get the text that the other person is running late? And why should you expect that the meeting place would change so late that the news doesn't get to you until you are actually on your way? I love the apps where your phone won't make any noise, and will instead send a "Talley Sue is driving, she'll get back to you" message. I think all cell phones should be required to have that as an operating-system option (much like Airplane Mode), and it should be easy to use. Maybe it should be a button on the welcome screen. And I'm not focused on teens, actually.

We were almost forced off the road recently by a young mother texting while driving in the lane beside us. To make it even more infuriating, she had 2 toddlers in the back seat. Grrrr.

Not only is it illegal here but they're doing a special sweep. Unmarked cars looking solely for people texting and driving. GREAT!!!

I know I've posted this before: I was visiting my Cuz in Houston and stopped at a red light. When the light changed I was about to proceed, thank goodness I was alert. A Mother with a car load of kids in a Van ran the red light while Mom was Texting on her phone.

I just said a prayer for those kids.

It is against the law to text while driving here in Iowa. A teen was killed in an accident last spring while she was texting and her mother asked the legislature to pass a law.

Talking on a cell phone while driving, unless the driver is using a handsfree earpiece, is illegal; as is texting while driving.

People still do it anyway. Drives me nuts. I always carry my little Canon PowerShot camera in my purse, so now I just take a photo of the vehicle's license plate as well as a photo of the driver (no, I don't do this while driving -- I do it when Hubs is driving and I'm the passenger). Then I send the photos to the California DMV.

It not only should be against the law, it is totally against common sense What are they thinking when they are texting or talking on any phone, hand held or hands free? They are telling us that their trivial conversation is more important than my life. Three Cheers to you,Liljunkr, and good going, for some parents with common sense.

A 19 yr old was just buried yesterday because of this. He was driving and texting, luckily his friend survived in the passenger seat.
It is not illegal here yet to use phones etc. while driving. We are 1 of 2 provinces in Canada not to have it illegal yet. Gotta get it done!

A co-worker saw me used my cellphone as I drove out of the office parking lot. He yelled at me the next day. I deserved it.

Making something illegal won't stop it. It's nearly impossible to enforce simple seat belt laws.

I'm still hoping for a law that would require non-emergency vehicles to be equiped with a device to block transmision of all but emergency numbers while the vehicle is in motion. There is NOTHING being said or texted that can't wait until you pull over. Weigh the lives saved against 'convenience'.

Many truck fleet owners have issued their drivers cell phones that block transmissions. The phone can't transmit when it is in motion.
