It is a lot more powerful.
You can make soups in it and with the proper container, you can grind wheat and coffee.
The initial purchase is not cheap but it is very versatile and lasts forever.
Their service department is great. I just had a question and the person informed me when my warranty was up and told me to remember if I needed anything to call before then and whatever I needed would be sent free of charge with no shipping costs.
But I haven't needed anything and it is about ten years old.
I have made bread dough in it but really prefer to do it by hand.
It IS noisy, however.

I gave mine to my DD because she uses it more than I do. She makes bread, only using it to kneed it, then take it out to let it rise etc. So good. It is well over 10 years old. They have bought additional attachments to make their own sausages using venison. Saves them money.

I think for me it would one of those purchases that look good in the store, but not in reality. Kneading bread is no problem by hand. I can't imagine making soup if it is anything like a blender.

We caved and ordered one after researching and reading tons of info. We were vacillating between a vitamix and juicer for quite a while, but the vitamix won out because it is more versatile and you also get the fiber, peel, etc, instead of juice only and having to discard the other stuff. Plus, we already eat plenty of fruit, but need to consume more vegetables and neither one of us is fond of carrot sticks, kale and other good-for-you stuff. So this seems to be a good way to incorporate the above without suffering the taste as it's masked by fruit. :o)

There is no comparison between the two. The blender samshes food along the sides of the container and the vitamix draws the food into a vortex and pulverizes it, there in the difference lies. The best product on the market IMHO of course.

Thanks, all. I was just curious. I've been seeing Vita-Mix ads for decades, from back when I used to read the old Prevention magazine. Good, powerful kitchen equipment is always tempting, but if I had that kind of money hanging around I'd be more likely to put it toward camera equipment. :-)

I manage with a blender,a stick blender,a small hand mixer and a big KitchenAide mixer. Bought all the Kitchenaide attachments and make do with these. I did have a small food chopper at one point but it came in 2 parts and I lost one part, tossed the other.

They have good deals for vitamixes at costco, and you can also purchase a refurbished one from the vitamix website. It comes with the same warranty as a new one, but at quite a savings.
