Use cloth diapers.

The packaged ones when travelling or in other unusual circumstances.

Proviso: Daddy's workrules include some of the scraping and washing.

there are services for cloth diapers everywhere. my sis used them for her twins 5 yrs ago. if parents did some research into the chemicals in the plastics, let alone dioxin (that is banned in europe), they would never use disposables. that is the reason my sis used cloth, she and BIL are scientists. ~ liz

Ed, how funny that YOU would post this when my DD is now 8 wks. pregnant with her 1st & they're going to use cloth and glass bottles. I used cloth for my 4 (she's the youngest, at 30; oldest is 40) b/c it was cheaper (but a lot more work.) Other 4 GKs (7-12 yr.) were in disposables. Cay/Pat's (gender still to be determined) parents are going "old school!"

I know a lot of people say you can't start seeds without a grow light setup and heat mat, but I've been successfully starting all kinds of seeds every year with just a south-facing window. Sometimes there are leggy seedlings, especially if we've had a lot of overcast days when they sprout, but I've planted them deeper if possible and they've worked out just fine. To be honest, I see the minimal requirements for a beginner gardener to be a few tools like spade and trowel, seeds, and seed starting soil. Not much expense at all. Like the rest of us, gardeners just catching the bug this year will collect up the rest over the next couple of years, fencing next year IF they have a problem with deer or rabbits, maybe a canner or dehydrator the year after when they get more confident and enlarge their tomato patch. If they REALLY catch the gardening bug, a rain barrel or composter. If they want to get into a competition with their neighbours for the earliest tomato, they can get a heat mat and grow light setup to get a jump start on the year. They can try all sort of different tomato cages to see which ones suit their needs best. Keep in mind these things are optional and free alternatives are possible. I use hockey sticks with broken blades from the arena for my tomato stakes. (Nice and sturdy!) Composters can easily be made with free materials or just a compost heap used. A drum to use as a rain barrel can be found for free from some places, but plastic food grade drums can be bought for less than $20.00 if you're willing to cut the top off yourself. Seeds can be started in a south window using free materials. Someone suggested yogurt containers, which is a great idea. Check recycling bins if you don't buy yogurt for yourself. Most soil is at least marginally OK for growing plants so replacing your own soil with topsoil is optional. For those who have really bad soil, some form of lasagna gardening might suffice. We all want the best soil but sometime we have to work with what we got, yet we still manage to get food out of the ground. My point is...for those of you who are just starting out, don't be discouraged by what is being said in this thread. Sometimes, gardening is just as easy as sticking a plant in the dirt and letting it grow. It doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to be backbreaking. As you learn and get experience, then think about expanding the garden and canning food for the winter.

Susan, I love your light stand and always will love it. I realize it was the best solution for you, but if I told Tim I wanted to buy one of those, he'd hand me a hammer and tell me to build my own....which is why I have the one that I have. : ) Mine is hidden away out of sight in a room where guests rarely venture, although anyone who knows me and who knows I raise my own seedlings always asks to go upstairs and see it in the spring. So much for putting it out of sight....I just should have set it up in the dining room or breakfast room or something.... I am sure you'll be deliriously happy with it and will have many wonder seed-starting adventures and I look forward to hearing all about them. I think you got a great deal considering it was Gardener's Supply. I never buy anything of theirs for full price. They have sales often enough (and especially in November when, I think, some of us gardeners are shopping for ourselves) that a person can be patient and get a good price during their periodic sales. I've noticed that prices often are not as good in December when gardeners' spouses or family members are doing what I call "panic Christmas buying" and cannot afford, time-wise, to wait for a sale. I don't think you were repetitive at all. The more we all share about what we do, how we do it and why we do it (as well as pointing out what didn't work for us!), the better for all of us to learn from one another's experiences! Carol, Our weather is just like yours. Our high was 70 degrees yesterday and it was so gorgeous outside I could hardly stand it. I wanted to jump up and down and scream "Spring Is Here!". That was exacerbated by the smell of the orange blossoms on my little orange tree. However, I controlled myself because I knew it was a false spring and that winter was returning today. It was 56 degrees around 7 a.m. here at our house and now it is 36 degrees and we have had very, very light rain but lots of thunder. Phooey on winter! I think you showed those folks at the co-op that one benefit of being a gardener is that it keeps your muscles and joints strong, healthy and fit. I'd rather "work out" in the garden any day, than walk on the treadmill or work out on the weight machine. Who wouldn't? Trees, Nope, sorry, I just haven't gotten to it. I am trying. Watch for it in a couple of hours or in the morning. I'm about to start typing mow after I close up the chicken coops, put out the deer corn for my favorite deer, refill the bird feeders (those little birdies are eating nonstop today trying to stay warm), etc. I'm kind of dreading going out into the cold wind but I need to do it now before it gets dark. I have to warn you that I don't use the same planting schemes every year because I don't want to get stuck in a rut, but I'll try to mention some of the planting schemes in my usual rotation. Dawn

Hazel, how exciting to hear about your plants! It's a fun and rewarding time of year, isn't it? I have decided not to worry so much about doing every little thing just so, Dawn is right, plants know what to do. SO. . . when did you plant your beans? You planted them from seed? What kind of beans did you plant? I have not planted mine yet but I'm thinking I need to get on the ball and do it. My habit has been to plant later rather than earlier and I think this year I want to go ahead and get my seeds in the ground. It's been a warm and extremely dry season so far. I'm sure the colder temps are behind us. I just want RAIN!! My carrots and beets are still very small but at least they have a start. Everything I started indoors, under the grow light I made, I have been very disappointed with. (I'll do my homework for next year) I started my squash and cukes too early and I'm just going to plant seeds next week. My tomatoes are just pitiful. I think I'll keep trying and transplant next month and have a back up plan with plants from a nursery. Here in Enid, my selection is a joke, BUT actually last year I bought a cherry tomato plant, variety unknown, that just did marvelous and produced till the frost did it's number on it. My peas that I planted from seeds look great, about 3" tall now. Oh how I hope I get a good crop, I do love my peas! My asparagus is doing superb, almost all of the 18 or so plants have sprouted and are now covered with soil and hay. Dawn, you have so much experience and give great advice, so here is a question for you. What kind of Espoma do you use? I had no idea there were so many to choose from! I also have been adding organic material to my soil for the past couple of years and it's looking good, I would like to simplify things and get a basic fertilizer, if that is what can be done. I have had the OSU extension center do soil sample tests on different parts of my garden for a couple of years and my pH is good, just needs a bit of potassium and phosphorus, which I have added. Style is more than just how you decorate within your means, it is also how you would decorate with unlimited means. Limited choices vs. unlimited, how do you handle both? For a person from a privileged upbringing that has never been poor to say that style and money have nothing to do with each other is a bit dismissive. Our sense of style is influenced by our upbringing, our innate tendencies, media, friends, personal experiences, travel, etc. A true artist as Andre was may be able to come to great design style no matter the upbringing and influences but that is not something that we can know. Having said this, I do not believe that her quote is in reference to personal style so much as it is to both style and "good design." And as Eames Demetrios said about Design vs. Style, Style is simply the look, attitude, or aesthetic of an object, building, etc. and Design is the attempt to provide a holistic answer to a need, stated or otherwise. Andre accomplished both, often with limited means, and proved that she had true vision, not just a good sense of style.

I bought cloth diapers when my first child was born. But I put one on her and it immediately soaked thru onto her crib sheets. I switched to disposables and never went back. They were so easy to change, roll up and dispose of. I figured I added about 2000 of those things to landfills. Where they are still sitting today, 22 years later. I am sorry.

The only thing I did do well was to breast-feed. Never had to spend a cent on bottles glass or otherwise or on formula. Plus my daughters got the best nutrition, including antibodies, etc. As a bonus, nursing helped me lose all my pregnancy gained weight within 2 months of giving birth.

There's lots of ways to save buckets of money... don't spoil them! LOL 5 year olds do not need cell phones, designer clothes, ipods, etc.

Funny you should mention this, someone was hounding me the other day about buying bottled water and all those bottles going into the landfill... it shut her up when I said they're going to be recycled into other things and then I asked where all those diapers, juice boxes and tv dinner trays in her cart are going to go! When I went, let's see what else is in here, she went to another line! :D Oh gee...

I always wondered-which is worse? Using disposable diapers and dumping them in trash or use cloth diapers, and use all that wash water, detergent and rinse water, fabric softener plus whatever? Do the babies know the difference? All I remember is I changed every single diaper, none of my inlaws or DH ever touched a one. And at some point, around 18 months, the child would go to the closet, grab a clean diaper, then lie down and wait to be changed.

I'm far from being a tree-hugger, super-ecologist but seems to me a little water and detergent is definitely offset by the manufacturing, transporting and the like of the disposables which would include petroleum, electricity, water, cardboard, plastic, fuel & emissions from transport vehicles and other items. And even though I'm not a nutcase about it, I nevertheless have other things I'd rather see filling up the landfills.

A read that a diaper service is better (water usage, etc.) than home washing. However, some day cares do not allow cloth, too much work for them.
