Souvenir de la Malmaison would be my first choice since it's beautiful, fragrant and a great rebloomer. It forms a handsome bush which for me has been almost disease-free and has tolerated a lot of heat here. Will you be ordering from the Antique Rose Emporium? Got a bamboo robe for DW last Christmas. It's 65% bamboo and 35% Egyptian cotton. She absolutely loves it. Got it online from Turkish Towels in NJ. List price is $90, but they now have a Fall Sale for 25% off and free shipping. Brookstone sells the same robe for $100. I suspect other retailers carry something similar. The robe (one size) is fairly large and somewhat heavy, but no problem for my smallish wife. Material is very soft and there have been no problems with washing/drying. Great for right after one's shower/bath; relatively too bulky/heavy for use as a house robe. Since hubby now has yours, you should get one for yourself, too, especially at the sale price. Good luck! A gift card to a nice deli nearby-to-them where they might select some special cheeses, salami, wursts, and spreads that they might not otherwise treat themselves. Germans LOVE their preserved meats and cheeses as a light supper. Certificate for tickets to a Berlin concert or play (again a treat they might not otherwise have). A gift card to the huge, I mean huge! KaDeWe department store where they could select from everything in the store (including a big top floor of high end foods, as well as a restaurant). If you need to bring your gift with you from the States, then I'd suggest some pairs of Levi's (if your daughter can get the sizes), or electronics (like an iPad mini depending on your budget of course!!). Both those things are so much more expensive in Germany that they are often bought here by visiting Germans. If the budget is much smaller, then another item they can't get there but like to have is bags of chocolate chips for baking. (It's so weird that they have to pay a monster price at a specialty shop to get the imported US ones!) You could bring a cookie plate themed from your home area, and some bags of chips. Weekend holidays are big as a way to get away from the city. There is a region of Bed and Breakfast type accommodations in the forested area north of Berlin, and you might give them a nice weekend getaway for the upcoming Spring. You probably already know this from previous experience, but the gift wrapping is also extremely important, even for a gift card or certificate, and your special care with that will definitely be noticed and appreciated!

Gift certificate to a local garden center? He may not have the green thumb, but maybe his spouse does? Plus there's always going to be things he may need for the new yard that require maintenance even if he doesn't garden/raise veggies. I was pleased with the actual small yard shrubs they gave me upon retirement, but alas they died before they could be planted as the landscaping at my new home hadn't yet been completed. (I tried to save them!) They also gave me bird houses to set up, so I do have that remembrance... In my case, I had let it be known I was downsizing - but they knew I was moving homes. (OF course, if he's going into an apartment or rental property... disregard the above!) Actually, at my old company, if someone leaves (retirement, new career op) we all pitch in and donate money along when we sign the going away card. The "gift committee" (informal, just the department administrative assistant and a few interested volunteers that vary each time depending on how well said individuals know the departee) never drew upon company funds to provide a gift. The company itself did send a gift certificate that I received a month or two after retirement. (No idea if they do that for people moving to another job opportunity if there's no formal retirement request.)

If you have a KMart, check the book section. I found lots of neat books that she can push the big buttons and some tell colors, some tell letters and the books have big, bright pretty colors. My Greats love them. Also they like the toy telephones they can push the buttons and it talks back. Not into dolls yet--just pushing buttons. Love animals especially those when you open the page and you can "feel" something--furry, rough, smooth etc

Role playing toys like Fisher Price Little People, play food sets, play shopping carts, Duplo Lego sets, building blocks, age appropriate puzzles,sand box toys, bath toys and it is never too early to start buying regular books as gifts. Not only books they can look at themselves but books that can be read to them. Two years olds are one of the easiest ages to please with toys. They have no gender or peer bias at that age.

I just gave the 2 year old twins down the street from me the new Mattel game UNO MOO. The box has 3+ but surprise me a lot they love it, along with their almost 5 year old brother. The kids know the colors and animals so they are playing with the toy and having fun.

As a parent, I can tell you I absolutely hate the musical toys that make noise all of the time. My kids got way too many stuffed animals from people so they became clutter.

My little girl got a cooking set for her 2nd birthday and loved it. She also loved the little dress up clothes. Bubbles are always a hit. Everything Wildchild said would be appropriate.
