Is 3 months really necessary?

The Christmas stuff is out at the Target I was in the last week. I don't care what anyone says, that's too blasted early to start making people grouchy. There oughtta be a law... one seasonal event at a time. Back to school and Christmas don't go together!

It's another "it depends" question. If you're never going to sell the house, or you're not going to sell it for 10, 15, 20 years, then do what it takes to make the house better for you at this stage of your life. If the master bath will give you great rewards, an improved quality of life, a better feeling about your house and how you live in it, then go ahead and do it. Figure that your son is in the house for another 7-8 years full-time, then another 4-5 part-time while attending collge. So having a bath for you and another bath for him sounds pretty good for both of you, especially when he's a few years older. Also after he moves on, you'll have the second upstairs bath as a guest bath when you have overnight guests. That's a big plus, not having to share your personal bathroom with company. As for "wasted space", if you really want to get critical, right now you're using two bedrooms out of four, right? So are the other two unused rooms up for disposal? A bad analogy but you get my drift? There's the tipping point between "necessity", "not necessary but nice", and "extravagance". You're sort of in the "not necessary but nice" category; you don't really NEED this remodel, but it would improve your quality of life and make you more comfortable in your home. If the money to do this upgrade will not cripple you financially, and it won't be borrowed from a 401k, then sure, it sounds like a worthy upgrade. If you have to beg or borrow or risk your financial future to do an upgrade like this, then in these financial times it might be best to sit tight. House-value wise, it's sort of a trade off. You're losing a bedroom, but you still have three. Were you going from three bedrooms to two, that'd be huge negative. On the upside, you're gaining a master bath AND you're keeping the bath for the two other bedrooms, plus you still have the public bath downstairs. The master bath is a big plus. Just my thoughts.

"Capital Culinarian or a Bluestar shouldn't be sitting in front of combustible drywall." Drywall is not considered combustible. Any gas appliance listed for home use will have required clearances to flammable surfaces in the installation instructions. Most are 'zero clearance' meaning the sides and back of the unit can be directly against flammable surfaces (like your wood cabinets on each side). Many of the larger stoves also have a requirement for cabinets on each side of the stove and above the top surface to be at least 18 inches above the top of the stove (not from the grates but from the top of the stove). A back-splash behind a stove (especially a larger one used top cook a lot) should be something easy to clean. Commercial kitchens often have tile walls, but they can use a garden hose to clean up with (and many do at the end of the day, with HOT water from the hose). The commercial stoves are not usually zero clearance (and handles and oven doors can get hot enough to burn you) and often have room on each side to make cleaning easier. The tile is not flammable, so the clearance rules are met (ceramic tile on even cement backer board is very heat resistant and a lousy conductor of heat also).

I'm glad the recipe surfaced again because we LOVE pecans for a snack food, and this one is all "dressed up" and ready for a special occasion. BTW, the Kentucky Derby is May 2nd this year - so I have plenty of time to give it a pre-Derby test ;-). I soak all nuts overnight in salted water (a la "Nourishing Traditions" method), to partially sprout them, as well as reduce the tannins and the numerous enzyme inhibitors. Then I dehydrate them until they are crispy/dry in the dehydrator (8-12-hours). The nutrients are also more readily available if you use this method. The salt in the soaking water activates enzymes and neutralize enzyme inhibitors, so don't skip that part of the soaking. (Four cups of pecans + 2 t. sea salt and enough water to cover by 1-2". Stir to dissolve the salt. Cover with a cloth and leave out on the counter for at least 7-hours and up to 12-hours. Dehydrate in a single layer until crispy dry.) You will end up with buttery-tasting pecans, rather than those that leave a "bite" in the back of your throat, and a bellyache if you over-indulge. Your pecans will also last longer in storage if you use this method. I usually do 8-cups of pecans (also almonds and walnuts) at a time. Walnuts are the only ones I store in the refrigerator/freezer after treatment because they contain large amounts of triple unsaturated linolenic acid and are more susceptible to rancidity than pecans and almonds. This recipe is an all-in-one recipe (soak, sweeten, and dehydrate) I keep on hand at all times, and I think the same technique will work with the original recipe Sushipup posted above, and that's how I plan to make them. Sweetly Spiced Crispy Pecans 4 c. raw pecans 2 t. sea salt 5 T. (coconut) palm sugar 1 t. cinnamon Soak pecans in a large bowl with filtered water and salt for 8-12 hours. Pour off water and allow to drain well in a large colander for 5-10 minutes. Place back in the bowl; sprinkle with sugar/cinnamon mixture and mix well. The moisture from the soaked pecans will create a light coating over the pecans. Place on dehydrator trays. Dry at 150°F for one hour and reduce the temperature to 125°F until completely dry. To test the nuts for doneness, allow to completely cool before testing by snapping them in half and then eating them. -Grainlady

I also got my slabs from M. Texiera. I found that the fluorescent lighting within the building where the slabs are housed was not ideal for judging the slabs, even when oiled. There was a great variance among those in stock and relative to the sample set I had received. Because I was there, I was able to have the slabs moved outside so that I could see them in the natural light which revealed their true color and detail. I also found it difficult to take photographs with my digital camera, either because of the light, my camera or my ineptitude. As the others said above, whether a visit is necessary really depends upon how picky you are about veining and coloration. Also, I needed large slabs which limited me to only a few types. I almost left without finding slabs and then finally found some in a type I hadn't seen before. Given that I was spending a lot of money and making a fairly permanent decision and that I am very picky, I was glad to have made the trip.

Cracker Barrel here had Halloween stuff out in July! Our 6-year old granddaughter just had to have one of the tall pointed hats with gloves sets- she said the other day she still plans to use it on Halloween.

Very little if any Christmas here. Mostly Halloween and Thanksgiving.

It's ridiculous - they had Christmas stuff at Costco before Labor Day. I love Costco but it's about enough to make me quit going there. The thing is though they wouldn't be taking up shelf space with the stuff if people weren't buying it.

Halloween stuff started coming out here in early August! Guess that's three months too. They want you to buy the candy early... gambling it'll be gone by Halloween!

If they start playing Christmas music next week, *that's* when I draw the line!

Lowes had Halloween and some xmas out yesterday. I'm surprised how much space big store such as target use up way before the holiday. I can't see ANYONE buying xmas decor now.

I think the only place that should have Christmas stuff early is the craft store. Those that enjoy creating things need to get the supplies early.

Beautiful fall picture, Cynic. Our trees never put on that kind of beautiful display.

We were warned by the cashier at one of our local stores to get our halloween candy soon, because the store was downsizing their "seasonal" department and didn't have room for the Halloween and Christmas stuff at the same time. "And the Christmas stuff is starting to come in!".

I was shopping in Joann's Fabrics this week and they were playing Christmas carols. The employees must get really tired of hearing them.

As much as people complain about this every year, it must be working for the stores or they wouldn't do it. I did buy my first two Christmas presents for my boys yesterday (online) but I don't think the actual decorations need to be put out this early. Personally I haven't seen Christmas yet - Halloween just came out in the stores I shop in. Some houses are already decorated for Halloween here.

As much as I hate seeing it, I used to work in retail and did some buying for a store, and they have to do their planning and ordering at least 6 months ahead. I'm like some of the others and just try not to see it. But I do draw the line at Christmas music being played in September<?I>......geesh!

That's just wrong! Listening to them a full month is more than enough time for me. I can't imagine how those poor clerks feel, listening to them for 3 months!

No Christmas stuff here, just Halloween stuff.

oh dear, for us this year YES! somehow we managed ro toss all our cherished stockings (includung a set of hand-made our kids had used for years! 18 in all! so now dh and i are on a crusade to replace them! and at the price some are (we're trying to find them under $10 each!) we're trying to spread it out!

They probably realized that if they put the stuff out people will buy it, so they put it out earlier and earlier.
