How I look forward to your posts of cemeteries and headstone pictures. I walk old cemeteries and find them so peaceful and enjoyable. Love reading the names and dates. One will never know if they come across an ancestor. Thank you for posting!

Wow, looks like a very cool place to spend some time!! As for Morveldin, perhaps he is a kin to Grandma Mazer? We have a neat cemetery here (Spring Grove Cemetery) that has lots of really old graves and I like to look at them because they have lots of information on them like the one you have here. Like a little history lesson. What a fun and interesting thing you are doing. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks, everyone! It's a house, Vannie. There are a couple of houses nearby--in fact, when I parked in what I thought was a small gravel parking area for the cemetery (it was right alongside it), a woman came out of a house and told me I was on her property. She was nice about it, though, and let me stay there.

When I saw the houses I was surprised I needed the GPS coordinates to find the place. But I had stared and stared at the map, and couldn't figure out exactly how to get there. Internet maps aren't always clear.

I really enjoy sharing these at the KT.

murraysmom -- I have ancestors in Spring (Something) in Cincinnati. I can't think if it's Spring GROVE or another name. One is my immigrant from near Edinburgh who was first burried where he'd fallen from his horse, then was re-interred with the family in Cincy after his widow had died. (His daughter arranged the move.) I'm SURE there's a story THERE!

i was amazed at how less threatening cemetaries were after ds1 had to visit and note dates, ect, for one of his college classes...we took several pictures to discover what wasn't visible to the naked eye was visible to the camera...

have to lol..was driving with my 5 yo dgs today and passed a cemetary..he says that's a cemetary. gma... yes it is. dgs... thats a scary place with monsters gma... not getting too graphic, said no honey no monsters. dgs...well to me there are!

Here's a coule of interesting pictures I took in AJ Powell Cemetery in Hominy Oklahoma. This cemetery has a lot of beautiful old Indian headstones but this one takes the cake by far.. It was hard to get a picture of the inside without getting my own reflection but you can still see the concrete coffin pretty well..

Wow, what a beautiful old cemetary. I used to live in Roslyn, WA where they filmed "Northern Exposuer" and they had neat old cemetary there too.

My James was born in 1802 on a farm near Edinburgh, one of a dozen sibs. His widowed mother and all but one child came to NYC by 1832. He was the only one to go to Cincinnati. I have a copy of a letter he wrote in 1844, announcing his rather late marriage, citing the adage "Better late thrive than (something) damned".

On the iris forum..... a lady said she has "cemetary" iris. She says they are minature white ones....you know...like you see planted in cemetaries.

Sorry, I meant to answer this earlier. I have not seen even one iris of any kind. But I've always been surprised at how few people grow flowers in this rural area. With some gorgeous exceptions, most of the flower gardens I've seen were grown by people who came here from somewhere else (like me). It's not an affluent area, and perhaps people had to be focused on the practical. In any case, I'll bet if we had more flower gardeners around here I'd see more cemetery flowers.

chisue, I clicked on the "ID" column after entering in James' information and I saw all the information about his interment!! How cool is that? I didn't know they had that much information on line. My family is at several different cemeteries around the city. My sister and I keep saying we will go to find all the graves we can. We haven't done it yet. We're not getting any younger LOL. I'm going to leave in a little while to check out James and family. I'll let you know what I find.

Nicole, was she from Texas....the lady who mentioned "cemetary irises"? I know what she is talking about. They are an old bearded iris. They are very noticeable here because bearded irises generally don't do very well because our climate is too wet. I have a collection of old roses that I have grown from cuttings about 4" long, taken from old roses growing in cemetaries. You see a lot of "antique plants" in some of the cemetaries around here. Besides irises and roses...crinums and sometimes daylilies can be found.

Thanks, Murraysmom. I *know* the story about the other James -- the poor man couldn't feed himself and his family by 1937. He committed suicide. This was 'The Good Son', who'd taken in my father and his brother earlier in the Depression after their own father had left his family to fend for themselves. (Left his wife and seven kids; she took him back later.) Wrong guy left this earth, IMO.

My immigrant James (b. 1802) was already 42 when he wed a widow with two children. I figure he was about 51 when he died in a fall near Avondale. Then she was widowed again, but now with five children and a Civil War brewing. Meanwhile, the son of one of her three (Ford) sisters was enroute to becoming an English peer, despite an abandoning father.

Gee, Nicole.......you have interesting graves in your little town! I don't think my local residents had that much imagination, generally speaking.

I actually have to choose my own gravestone one of these days (how's that for a task?), as my ashes will someday join my husband's and my daughter Jill's. I know I'm not doing a bear. Jill was called "Aunt Deer" by Lizzie when she was little, so a deer might be nice. But then everyone would think we were deer hunters. :-)

There were a LOT of gravestones with a birthdate and no "end date"......and then this one where they didn't know the "end" date? It was interesting. The lady with the cemetary iris just emailed, she put 5 of them in the mail for me. :0)

Hey, marilyn c, I had never heard of Woodsman of the World. I just looked at some examples on Yahoo and they are really neat. I saw a monument with a log on the top of it when I was looking up chisue's family. Now I think I will go back and look at that log monument. I'm learning a lot from this experience.

I love old cemeteries. Dh thinks it's weird. I live close to gold country and there are a lot of old cemetaries throughout that area. I just can't get DH to stop whenever we are out there.
My gggrandmother is apperently burried about 90 minutes from where I am but I don't know where. I think she remarried late in her life and I don't know her married name. I'd love to find her. My grandma always took me to various old cemeteries in West Virginia. I have a large number of relitives in a family cemetary that isn't marked. It's up a dirt road behind an old white house. Such a great old place.

The little cemetery in Milford, PA has a beautiful sign posted at the entrance that reads..

nicole, I reread your post with the picture of the stone where Daisy has no "end" date. I wonder if maybe she remarried and ended up buried with her "new" husband? Just a thought.

OH.....a stock photo of a cemetary iris. Says they date back to 1400bc, used by Muslims on graves....

Since I'm registered as a contributor with FindAGrave, I get emails when a request is made for a photo in my area. The only problem is, FindAGrave must think "my area" is awfully big! Maybe this is because when I attended my cousin Terry's funeral in NY two years ago, I impulsively took a picture of a gravestone that caught my attention--and it turned out to be one that someone had requested. So I filled a request in NY, and I guess that set me up to receive other requests in that area.

The other thing I do with FindAGrave is just photograph gravestones at random, and upload them to that cemetery's listing on the website as needed. Sometimes the deceased is already mentioned (has a memorial) on the website, and someone else has taken the picture. That doesn't happen very often, but if it does, I just don't upload mine. Sometimes the deceased has a memorial but no picture, and in that case I add mine. Most often, no memorial exists, so I create one, uploading the photo along with information such as name, dates, and links to spouses or parents.

I just checked my FindAGrave status. So far I've only filled 16 photo requests, but I've created 492 memorials and have added 689 photos.

I'm also registered at raogk.com (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness), but don't hear from them very often.

Oooh....I didn't see the iris picture when I posted. Now I'm thinking any iris might be nice to plant at a grave site. There's always the danger they'll get choked with grass, though.

I was dismayed to find so much poison ivy in the local cemeteries this year.
