Survivor begins Sep 24th

Just a reminder that Survivor starts tonight. In the east in the TV Guide it shows it's on from 8pm to 9:31pm. I hope it's a good season.

I am looking forward to it!! happy that there are no returning players, although there are a few familiar faces, including the sisters from Amazing Race who drove me crazy lol

Hi Jenny, I'm no where NEAR experienced with this container growing stuff but I have to say I think the clay pots might help, when the problem is the ambient heat of the area as well as direct sun on the pots. Clay does breath so the roots dry out out quicker, but it also insulates the roots from the heat. And since they breathe, it enables you to water MORE without having to worry about roots staying too soggy. And I THINK (maybe Al will chime in on this) it's the temp of the ROOTs that often affect whether the plant takes up water and nutrients. Not the temperature in the air itself. I'm in the San Francisco bay area inland and my summer days get 90-100. My terra cotta pots (citrus mostly) seem to help not bake the roots. The ONLY plant I've ever lost (knock wood) was in plastic. You probably know, but there's another greek poster... goes by the name of "greekman" who has TONS of stuff on his balcony. I think he's in Athens, tho. Don't know where you are. And forgive me if I didn't read your entire post closely... but if you're able to construct some sort of umbrella, canopy, pergola across the top of your balcony that might help with the extreme heat. Oops, I see you said it didn't... but maybe if you went to a thicker shade block, who knows? As far as varieties... one thing I don't recall seeing on your list is figs or citrus or olives... things I always associate in pots in a mediterranean climate. (And they always sell them at our local greek festival every year.) I know nothing about growing those items (well citrus) and definintely NOT growing them in Greece, LOL, but have you tried those? One final thought... I agree with you I find succulents mostly unattractive. But I've beens seeing more and more I like that are drought tolerant and striking and you may be able to find a few varieties you like if it comes to it. Not all are prickly spiky things. Another idea might me some of the big grasses in a pot. Like a new zealand flax. Google the plant name and you'll see how big it gets. I just inherited a huge (like 7' tall one, about 8 years old) in a beautiful pot. It's foliage is striking but it could add height (for shade). Good luck this summer, -k

Watermelons you should definitely start early as they are tougher than muskmelons/canteloupes to grow in the north. Gourds you can plant directly outside on May 24... I have grown them direct from seed here in zone 3 at 53.5 degrees north latitude, and they were exceptionally heavy producers by early September. I have grown muskmelons/canteloupes twice here (going back to my garden notes for details). In 1999 I grew 3 plants of "Alaskan canteloupe", starting the seeds indoors on April 30 and planting in the garden under plastic on May 27. The plastic was removed around July 1, and on Sep. 12 when frost threatened I picked 6 small melons -- 4 were about grapefruit-size, and 2 were double that. They weren't quite ripe yet but muskmelons ripen nicely in a warm spot indoors as long as they have sized-up outside. In 2003 I grew "Passport tropical melon", which looked like some kind of cross between canteloupe and honeydew, with canteloupe rind and a sweet greenish flesh that tastes like a very sweet canteloupe. I didn't record as many details, but they were earlier, began ripening in mid-August and when I picked the last of them on Sept. 8, I had picked 10 melons from a 4'x5' patch. I've included a pic of a Passport melon taken on August 20. I've tried watermelons here twice, both fails. One year they got no bigger than walnut size at harvest, the other year it was a small yellow ice-box melon that sized up one melon in the garden but it never ripened. Hi All, It is not that people spend more money on gardening, though some do. It is that there are way more people gardening than any other hobby(it is not a regional thing, people do it all over the US, rich and poor), so take that money collectively and more money is spent. Yesterday, I spent most of my time at the hospitals again. My grandmother is getting better. She had another chest x-ray to make sure the pneumonia is gone. If she is well, she will be transfered to a nursing home to get more rehab so she is stronger to go home. My mother-in-law is still not well. I went last night and she was sleeping again. So I have not had a real conversation with her about what is going on. MMTina, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! Hope it is a good one, maybe spent wintersowing, lol! I have to go get some potting mix myself today. Hello all again! Please read the post about 6 messages back. I am unable to do any trading right now or hosting. I sincerely apologize for this, so someone will need to do the November swap also. Once again, I am off work and have been for 2 1/2 weeks and don't know when I will be able to go back. I explained that I hadn't done any of the swaps this year due to health and no money. I hate it, but it's the way it is. I hope to maybe get back in the swing next year but this year I wanted to be put on the back burner and maybe you all will let me back in next year. So what's the deal with putting people on Survivor that were already on the Amazing Race? They did that with another couple didn't they? Why? Are there not thousands and thousands of people trying to get on this show that we can't have totally "new" never before seen people? I know they had Boston Rob (gag, lol) and Amber on Amazing Race.......

Anyhow, I think that challenge for immunity was major. So many different parts to it, so much physical challenge to it, I thought it was huge for an opener. It was great.

I'm o.k. with who went home.

Shelly, you don't know which twin it was-now do you? I'm sure Glenda didn't mean to spoil that part of it. She surely didn't spoil the whole show.

I was OK with the twin going home. I thought her comments toward the guy calling him one of the girls was obnoxious. That challenge was epic--very physical. I thought everyone did really well on it, though. Good teamwork. It seems to be a very congenial group for now. I can see John Rocker (?) causing some drama in the future. He seems to be one of those "legends in his own mind" kind of guys.

Thrilled the twin was voted out. I had a very hard time watching them on Amazing Race. Her comment calling the gay guy a girl was totally inappropriate. Neither one of the twins have a filter.

Good challenges, good team and a good start to the season!

I like the twins, they have upbeat attitudes when they aren't bickering with each other and since they were split up, they couldn't hardly do that. I didn't agree with her comments to/about the gay guy, but he should have told her that it wasn't right instead of just letting it slide. Educate the ignorant, how else will they learn? And remember that one gay guy, the racist one? He called himself a girl all the time, and acted even more girly than the real women did. Colton, that was his name. So it's easier to see why some people could think that way.

Anyway, I'm sorry Nadiya got voted off. I didn't want any of them to go, though. And so much for the all-girl alliance, that won't be happening now.

Good for "old" Dale for nabbing that emblem/HII off the water well lid! And for making fire. I hope that he realizes it's a HII before it's too late.

she didn't have a chance since they felt she was "experienced"..but amazing race is a far cry different from survivor..

the timing is going to be hard..will have to catch up on the new tv shows on demand...

I, too am glad with the results....Not sure if I care for John Rocker. Who cares if he played baseball, last time I looked, they looked like ordinary men to me, except for their pay checks, lol....What about the model? And that strutting around in underwear makes me want to gag......But, I'm sure it's going to be a good season....I love this show!

I was happy with the first show and the vote off was a relief for me, I just don't care for them, they have show how rude and ruthless they can be in Amazing Race. The people on her team that brought up that info about her were spot on.
The challenge was a very difficult one, I just hope there are not any bad injuries this season.
That poor guys eyes were making mine hurt! Many of those plants sap contain latex I bet he has a latex allergy.

Best night on TV! Finale of Big Brother and the starting of Survivor...and Amazing Race starts Friday! I can not believe I get so wrapped up in these shows....but it gives me something to discuss with my kids.

I'm probably one of the few that care that John Rocker was a baseball player. We are huge Braves fans and he was THE closer of all times! That's not in his head... that's in Atlanta Brave fans heads! lol

However, as a human being, he's not all that. :)

Glenda - don't feel too badly. Anyone should be very careful if they don't want to read a spoiler knowing that something could already be posted. I'm one to be "looking" with my eyes closed but then just can't help but a little peek. lol
