When i was a girl, I used to get those sores in the winter. I think it was a shortage of vitamins. I was allergic to tomatoes and citrus, so my winter vitamin C levels were low and I think that was a big part of it.

Now that I live in the west with fresh produce year round, and that I can have tomatoes and citrus, I don't have sores at the corners of my mouth that crack and bleed.

Of course, I have no idea about radiation. Good health to you!

I would tend to think its from the treatments. My Mother got awful painful mouth sores. Doc can perscribe something.

I struggled with that for about two years. Was painful and just AWFUL looking! MD told me to up my vit E considerable until it was gone. I think I took 4 pills a day (maybe twice a day) for another year before it cleared up. I am sure my nutrition and stress levels from school contributed to my body's inability to heal. I also have very bad sinus problems so I tend to breathe through my mouth which causes the lips to stay dry.

Talk with your MD before adding vits, especially since you are taking radiation. I have no idea what all that does to you!!!!

Judy, a friend of mine who was having radiation had the same problem-actually sores in her mouth. The radiation tech told her to have a glass of ice to suck on right before she went into the treatment room. This seemed to help her quite a bit. I remember she was upset because even though she told the dr. about the problem he never made the suggestion. Good luck. Satine

I have had that happen....my dentist told me is was a fungal infection and gave me an anti-fungal topical cream to apply. It cured it immediately.
The radiation is probably affecting your immune system so a fungal infection is a strong possibility.

You could ask your Dr. if the treatments might be the cause. Last year when my DH was going through Chemo and Radiation, he was told he might develope mouth sores from the Chemo..nothing was said about the radiation.

I remember have places like that on my mouth when I was a kid! Hurt like the dickens too! I'm thinking the Dr. told my Mom it had something to do with a lack of some vitamin.

I've had mouth infections like this, it was caused by a yeast and needs special medicatipon. Go see your doctor or dentist.

It could be any of a number of things including herpes. Discuss this with your doctor. If you are undergoing treatments your immune system is down. This can cause a dormant virus like herpes to erupt. Or it could be any number of things previously mentioned. See you doctor to put your mind at rest and possibly get something prescribed to alleviate the symptoms.

Could be vitamins? I have read that B12 deficiency can do that.. You should definately ask your dr if you can take vitamins.. and ask him to check your B12 levels..

I have never had radiation, but did get sores like you from eating salty potato chips. The chips would brush the corner of my mouth and the salt would irritate it.

I suffer with this for years. Finally figured out I had developed an allergy to my toothpaste.

My Husband died a year and a half ago from cancer - chemo caused the mucus membranes in his nose and mouth to be sore, as well as his lips and skin on the outside of his nose - his Oncologist told him to apply vitamin E oil on the sore areas - really worked and healed them quickly.

Judy, I agree, it may be a deficiency in Vitamin B 12. After my chemo and rads for breast cancer, my Vitamin B12 was low and I needed weekly shots for awhile. One of the chemo drugs I was on knocked out my ability to absorb that vitamin for awhile. Next time anyone has to do bloodwork have them check your iron and Vit. B12 levels.

I too, experienced what you are going through during my chemo and radiation therapy.

Believe it or not I used Mentholatum on my lips and the corners of my mouth as well as "coated" the inside of my mouth with glycerine and ate Brachs lemon drops constantly!

My best to you on your battle, Judy. I was taking the chemo drug methotrexate, to lessen the chance of mouth sores I was prescribed Folic acid. Talk to your oncologist, he/she will have a suggestion or a med for you.

Use a pin to prick a hole in Vitamin E capsule & squeeze onto sores & cracks. It really helps with the heal & is very soothing.
