My Cousin Dale Died This Morning

This is the cousin who had a cancerous kidney removed about three weeks ago. The cancer was contained and he was doing great. He died this morning of a massive heart attack (they think as a result of a blood clot).

He was a very special person and dearly, dearly loved his family. His mom died when he was about 10 and he was the whole family's "little boy". His older brother had died the year before in a WWII airplane training crash and I think my aunt just simply died from grieving. He had three sisters and has always been so close to the whole family. My mom said he never got over losing his mother. We had ten uncles in our family and he grieved so much when each one of them died.

Once he was talking to my mom about my dad (his uncle) and he said, "I used to sit in his lap all the time. I still would, now, if he'd let me!" LOL

He was about 74, but looked and acted at least 10 years younger. RIP Dale - we love you.

If you like grape vine ivy you might also like its cousin the oak vine ivy. Not sure if anyone suggested Syngonium podophyllum or arrowhead plant. Or the purple passion plant. Can't remember the Latin name, but it's got purple leaves and they're very fuzzy. It vines after it gets a little older. As Purple has suggested ceropegia woodii would be a great plant for your hutch. Since there is 5 feet above your hutch have you thought of having anything up there besides a vining plant? There are actually two types of fairy lilies... Habranthus and Zephyranthes. One of them has blooms that face up, and the other has blooms that face downward, though I can never remember which is which. There are several varieties of each... and they come in a delicious assortment of color shades! For a taste, go to Ebay and do a search in the Garden section for Habranthus and Zephyranthes... you'll see everything from pink with a burgundy eye, to yellows and whites in different shades... a very beautiful little bulb! I grow mine in a pot on my east window sill, and I treat them like my Hippeastrum. I'm certain to allow them to dry out in between waterings, and they seem to grow leaves all winter long but remain rather dormant in the bloom department... at some point over summer, they begin growing scapes a few days following a decent watering, like they would outdoors if it rained. The flowers don't last very long, but the bulbs bloom intermittently all summer and into fall. I love these little guys! I've got several in a clay pot, and they've grown a few babies since I got them. It took about a year for them to bloom after I first potted them, so I think perhaps they need to settle in for a bit before they take to flowering regularly. I highly recommend them for pot culture in the north! They are tender, so they must be brought indoors for winter, just like Hippeastrum bulbs. I must thank Cindee again for these beauties! Thanks, Cindee! I plan to get some in yellows and whites, and more pink shades... so, I'll be sharing those with you when I get them!

Hello all... thanks for all the kind words. I am still trying to struggle through the day. Somedays I am ok, but others not that great. It was her birthday on October 20th. She would have been 64 or "39" as she would have said. We went to the park and fed the ducks... she always liked to do that. I also brought daisys and popped the tops off and placed them in the water. I miss the way that I would call her and she would be willing to go with me on what ever adventure I wanted to go on that day. She was always there for me. I know I am lucky to have a person like that and that it was my Mom, but it hurts no less. I am trying to build a new "normal". It is rough though because everything I do reminds me of her. I started to move around furniture in our house and I was thinking that everything I touched we bought together. She was a great decorator and I have no decorating sense at all. I just wonder when the feeling that I am completly lost and alone will go away. The holidays are coming and I hate it. I think we are going to plan a vacation at Christmas so I don't have to think about it. I don't know about Thanksgiving. Mom used to make the best mashed potatoes. This is so freaking hard. I think I am going to check into counseling again. It is so hard because I put on a strong face when I am out, but crumble when I get to my car or at home. I talk to my husband, but I don't think he really understands. What do you all do for the holidays?? Any ideas on how to get through them?

It's just Jan & I here, so on Christmas morning I stick my head out long enough to look out the window..See the snow and cold, and I tuck my head back under the covers to continue my hybernation. Jan was an only child and her Mother & Dad have both passed away and all my family are over 600 miles from here, so it's just the two of us. Somewhere around lunch time we get up and finish cooking our holiday feast, then we sit back and discuss all the things that we intended to buy for Christmas, but had already purchased throughout the year, because we needed them at the time, not three or four months later....LOL By example, in August our refrigerator died and Jan was in a tizzy because she simply could not figure out how to fit a new one into our budget.... I sat back and thought a bit and I said, "I got an idea, how about we get one time and I will pay the bill out of my money, rather than the household budget, and we will call it a Xmass present." At 9am the next morning we had a new fridge delivered and yesterday I tied a big red bow on the handle." We do go through the pretext of exchanging a few stocking stuffer items, but in truth, as far as big ticket items go, we either have them or don't need them, so whats the point?

He was the apple of everyone's eye by the sound of it. I am sorry for Dale's passing but I hope he is now catching up with his Mom and family.
