Went on a walk at my favorite local wildlife sanctuary, four miles from my home and was, as usual, treated to some magnificent sights.

Besides Shoveler and Ruddy ducks, Mallards, hummingbirds, Sandpipers, Egrets, Kildeer, Stilts, dragonflies, lizards and lots of white and brown Pelicans, we found a couple of Osprey feeding on a recent catch.

Awesome pictures Jodi!! You need to make a bird calendar... add in the hummingbird pictures you posted today and you've got a great start!

I used to love see osprey on camping trips in Oregon. Osprey mate for life.

I think I saw one of our ospreys yesterday. There is a nesting box on the Kingston-Rhinecliff bridge over the Hudson for them. I'm still a bit confused about what they are doing at my house. We are maybe a mile from the river, and close to a small stream, but the primary raptor food here is squirrel. Hmm, now that I think about it, there used to a couple of goldfish in that stream.

Wow! Your Better Beamer does a great job! What with all the updated equipment and incredible photographs, I feel pressure to keep up with the Joneses..er forum photographers. I'm turning in a venture capital business proposal to Google today, but may be awhile before there's a profit if they decide to fund it, but hey..gotta upgrade! Nice! I love those guys. That bird is a male (he lacks the "necklace" females have, unless I am missing it), and he is at least 1 year old, because I see his tail is in a molt. Definitely an Osprey! Their large stick nests can be found on many man-made structures so long as they are near a significant water source (fresh, brakish, or salt). That might be the male in this shot because of the pure white chest and belly. Female ospreys usually have a 'necklace' of dark brown on their chests but the necklace isn't foolproof as males can have them too but they usually aren't as large and dark. Nice picture!

Happy sushi Ospreys! Love the pictures. I wish I was there, some of my favorite sights. I love kildeer (and the others listed).

Great pictures. We have one who perches on our boat mast all summer - they've left now for the winter.

I love your bird pictures. I had a deer walk by on my garden path yesterday morning. I was so surprised. I wish my camera had been handy.

Fantastic pictures!

On a backpacking trip oh so many years ago, I was sitting quietly by a small lake, when a bird swooped down, went UNDER the water and came back up with a fish. I'm pretty sure it was an osprey, and it is a sight I've treasured ever since

Jean, for most shots I use a standard issue Canon 70mm-300mm f4-5.6 kit lens. Nothing special about it. Would like to upgrade to a faster lens but my neck can barely take the weight of my current lens.
