Went on a walk at my favorite local wildlife sanctuary, four miles from my home and was, as usual, treated to some magnificent sights.

Besides Shoveler and Ruddy ducks, Mallards, hummingbirds, Sandpipers, Egrets, Kildeer, Stilts, dragonflies, lizards and lots of white and brown Pelicans, we found a couple of Osprey feeding on a recent catch.

Awesome pictures Jodi!! You need to make a bird calendar... add in the hummingbird pictures you posted today and you've got a great start!

I used to love see osprey on camping trips in Oregon. Osprey mate for life.

The osprey nest is surprisingly low - about 25 feet off the ground - so I was able to get some reasonable shots. Much higher than that would have made it very difficult since I don't climb well :) I will be going back later this week to see if I can get some more pictures. While the parents were out, I heard some activity in the nest so I suspect there's at least one little one in there. The people at the DQ where I set up my equipment were very tolerant and didn't seem to care if I stayed all day "looking at some nest." Some of the patrons seemed to think they were under surveillance and I got some very odd looks. Others knew exactly what I was doing and watched with me. Look at the perfect diving entry when it's going for the flounder .... wings tucked back, head and feet together, claws right in front of eyes so whatever he was looking at will hit the claws. I'd like to see that as a fish's view. The flounder catch was with a bird that was lured to the photo tank, or a captive bird. They used to hunt the fish in the decorative pond where I worked .. you'd be walking along, chatting on a lunchtime stroll on the path by the pond and suddenly this huge bird would go KERSPLASH and erupt out of the water with a fish in his talons. They cheated. The fish were used to having people scatter food, so they were attracted to people at the edge of the pond. That's where the osprey would nab them.

Thanks Rachel - My only regret is that the photo is not more of a close-up, and not larger; but we were so taken by surprise by the whole thing, we were incredibly lucky! For someone new to birdwatching it was especially awe-inspiring.

Nice! I love those guys. That bird is a male (he lacks the "necklace" females have, unless I am missing it), and he is at least 1 year old, because I see his tail is in a molt. Happy sushi Ospreys! Love the pictures. I wish I was there, some of my favorite sights. I love kildeer (and the others listed).

Great pictures. We have one who perches on our boat mast all summer - they've left now for the winter.

I love your bird pictures. I had a deer walk by on my garden path yesterday morning. I was so surprised. I wish my camera had been handy.

Fantastic pictures!

On a backpacking trip oh so many years ago, I was sitting quietly by a small lake, when a bird swooped down, went UNDER the water and came back up with a fish. I'm pretty sure it was an osprey, and it is a sight I've treasured ever since

Jean, for most shots I use a standard issue Canon 70mm-300mm f4-5.6 kit lens. Nothing special about it. Would like to upgrade to a faster lens but my neck can barely take the weight of my current lens.
