Could it be that I'm getting to old for this???..

Hey, everyone...remember these things from when we were kids? This is a hedge ball for those who don't remember. We're going to meet my cousin and her friend in Des Moines this afternoon, and the friend wanted some hedge balls. Sounds like a simple request, doesn't it? Some people use them to repel insects, and I assume that is what she wanted them for. I think they sell for close to fifty cents apiece in the grocery store (not that I would ever buy one) She wanted about a dozen of them and I knew where there was a tree. Now...to the gettin' old part. These things weren't nearly as easy to get as they were when I was younger (I somehow forgot that I'm "shudder" getting.....old) I set off this morning with a paper sack (my second mistake..the first one was setting off) I find the tree, but it's hanging over a deep ditch. These things seem to like to grow in hard-to-reach places. I knew this tree was there and it didn't look that hard just at a glance. But...I was determined. I climbed down the ditch and managed not to tumble head over heels to the bottom. But...I then find that the nicest balls are still attached to the tree.....above my head. The ones on the ground are yucky and I don't want to deliver yucky goods. I start to jump for a branch. I'm thinking sixty-nine-year-old women aren't supposed to do things like that in the high weeds over a deep ditch. Of course I trip, but manage to grab a branch before ending up in the creek. There I stand precariously poised looking down the steep embankment with just this little branch keeping me from getting to the bottom faster than I would want to get there. I "do" manage to hang on, but then get dizzy (just took my blood pressure medication) while looking up. So..I stop and look down for a while until that passes and then try again. Well, to make a long story short (too late you say?) I fill up my sack with twelve...yes, count 'em...twelve hedge balls. I start back up the embankment only to find that a paper shopping bag was "not" a good idea. The bottom falls out and all the balls start rolling down the bank. I'll be darned if I'm going to let 'em get away after all that work and I get down and scramble for them. So...I have them all cornered again, but my sack isn't any good. I take my coat off and wrap them in my coat. Remember these things have sticky white goo in them, but hey..I've come this far..the heck with the coat. Oh yes..I forgot to mention that I had to park the car a quarter of a mile away. The trip "to" the tree wasn't so bad, but those things kept getting heavier and heavier on the way back to the car...besides the fact that I no longer had on a coat and it was 42 º this morning. Hey, she's going to get her hedge balls, and I'm going to hand them to her with a smile.....
