Good news about my Mom

After an MRI and CT last night, the neurosurgeon told my brother that it looked like Mom had a spontaneous venous bleed in her spinal cord, which should reabsorb and she should make a complete recovery! I just talked to her and she sounded tired, but was cracking jokes and really excited they were going to let her eat. Her symptoms mimicked a dissecting aortic aneurysm, which is not a great thing for someone 79 years old to have, so this was about the best possible news we could get. Surgeon says he only sees about 1 of these a year, so it's pretty rare and usually doesn't reoccur. My Mom is so healthy, doesn't take any medications, is slim, doesn't smoke, and keeps her arteries clear with her glass of wine everyday. I will go down on Monday after my work week ends because it sounds like she's stable. I am just grateful my brother was with her when this happened and she wasn't at home alone. She said she would have just gone to bed to sleep it off.

Just getting hear to read of your loss. I remember my trip to Philly several years ago when you and I made plans to meet for lunch --- you had to cancel our plans at the last minute and we didn't get to meet because your mom broke her glasses or something, and had no one but you to help her. You were a great daughter and I'm sure she knew that. My thoughts are with you today. You know, I think there is something special about those last rites. When my uncle got his last rites he had been completely "out of it" for a couple of days--hadn't spoken or moved voluntarily at all. And when the Bishop finished with them, my Uncle made the sign of the cross! And my dad was about to leave us at any second, then he got his last rites and kind of perked up for a couple of days (we were beginning to think we were a little premature with calling the Priest). I think it just gives people a sense of peace and acceptance after the last rites.

ttodd, I am so happy that your mom is doing well. As a parent, you want to protect your children (no matter what age). And support from family, friends and a strong will are all important parts of treatment and sounds like your mom has that down! I pray that some day, less people will hear the words "you have cancer".

I would imagine she's in intensive care, I'll find out more when I go into work tomorrow. I know this is just baby steps and I'm trying not to get too hopeful but it IS a start! I don't have much faith in the medical profession here in UK especially the stories I've heard about the hosp she's in. Rach's birthday is Wed (6/1) I wish Marg would be alert enough to wish her a happy birthday and continue to improve. I'm certain that would be the perfect gift for Rach

This IS a relief! Does this mean your mom may need to make some changes in her living arrangements?

(I get really cross about the bits and pieces of my own body 'wearing out'!)

Chisue, I think DD is going to move in with her Gram and look for a job in Chicago. She has a couple friends from college who are living around Chicago and would love to live with her Gramma. I will feel so much better having her there. I will spend the next week with my Mom and help her. Apparently her right arm is still somewhat affected and weak.
