Simple pleasures - a jar on honey

I'm cross posting from Sm.Houses tea thread, but wanted to share here too. This is a jar of honey I bought at an Herb Fair yesterday, 6" tall, still sealed with beeswax. Isn't it pretty? It appears to be stopped with a cork, and I can refill it when empty - a messy job but worth it I think. The honey company is from Oberlin Ohio.

Beautiful in its simplicity and contents. Looks a little like a bell.

Now pour some in a saucer, mashed softened butter in the honey. Open a homemade biscuit, warm, and sop. yummy!

Just came back from a foodie trip in Monterey/Carmel CA for three days. Just before we left, we had a fun lunch at the Culinary Academy of Monterey, on Cannery Row. They were doing "soup day" with 11 different soups and a basket of bread, 'bottomless bowl' (you could have as many/as often as you wanted) for a mere $10/person. They have a lovely outdoor patio overlooking the Bay. The day was sunny but the wind was cold, so I asked for hot tea instead of my usual iced tea. They brought the usual basket of pre-bagged teas, and there was one I had never seen before. The brand was Ambiance, and it was an Orange Jasmine Green Tea. I don't usually care for green teas, but this was very strongly flavored with orange and very nice! My DH who does like all kinds of tea, also liked it. If you ever run across it I recommend trying it. It reminded me of a variant on the old standby Constant Comment tea.

Everyone is corect about honey, back in the 70's I had 32 hives( a lot of work, but I was a lot younger.) The average person has no idea of the amount of work connected with collecting and maintaining bees. Back then I read where honey was found in some of the Egyptian tombs that was still good. so how old was that ?

Schoolhouse- I'm so glad you're here! Beautiful strainer...tea is such a fun way to enjoy something to drink...and have beautiful dishes and accessories, too. Very pretty honey container. It reminds me of Laura Calder's kitchen in French Food at Home. I watch her show on the cooking channel and she has wonderful containers for her honey, oils, wine (decanters)...and a milk bottle full of cream or 'creme fraiche'. I bet she has wonderful tea, at her house! Katrina ellen- Oh, I hope you get a cat. Dogs are fun, but kitties love to cuddle. At least mine do (LOL) especially as the weather gets cooler. ML- I'm glad the parrots had a good time. I bet they love being out of their cages. I hope you get your daylilies and have a safe trip home. It will be fun to see all of your plants...and we have to have tea in your new Teahouse...at least online :) Marti- I think it will get busier on the forum. As the days get shorter, I think more people will be on the computer and thinking about inside projects, again.

Boo, it looks fine to me, in fact it looks delicious and I might try it myself, my apple trees are LOADED again this year. My mother is allergic to lemons, but that just means I don't have to share, LOL. You have fruit and lemon juice, both acidic ingredients, with honey and sugar, no low acid ingredients at all. It's an unusual recipe, it seems a bit like apple butter with pectin. I think I might even add some of the zest from the lemons, that would give an interesting texture... Annie

Oh, I just noticed- it should have read "a jar OF honey" not "on". Doh.

What a great idea, glenda. Thanks for the suggestion! Yes, I know socks, it's so lovely. They must have found an old jar and used it as I've never seen new ones like that. Which makes me think that would be a clever and wonderful idea - using vintage and unusual jars for honey and jams, too. I suppose getting the correct lids for a good seal would be necessary though.

That bell jar is beautiful! My Mom used to make honey butter, a mix of melted butter, honey and cinnamon. don't know the exact recipe (proportions) but it tasted wonderful on toast or biscuits.

My dad would put the warm biscuit on top of the honey and butter and let the honey soak into the biscuit, then he'd sop to clean the saucer.

Honey, butter, and some fresh orange or lemon zest. Mix together and chill. Pretty if little candy molds are used.
