Yard sales today

I thought yard sales were drying up but today was a good day. I even passed up a few. I'm tired and so is Dan. He fell asleep on the way home.

Not a bad haul. 3 pairs of jeans for Nick. A Junior Monopoly game, still shrinkwrapped. I really should save that for Christmas. A Wiggles guitar and Wiggles book (with magnetic pieces)for Dan (he is a Wiggles FREAK!). Several good cookbooks (at least 6, they're still in the car), some kid's books (including an entire set of Charlie Brown books for 5 cents each). I bought some Halloween-themed small plastic baskets (around 20 of them) to fill with something for Nick's Halloween party at school (they are still in their original package). Got a vegetable cutter (like a mandolin) for $1, never used. Suede mittens (Charter Club brand) for $2. I love mittens. Ice cube tray that makes long thin ice cubes for bottles (never used). I've been seeing those all summer at yard sales and finally bought one. A purse. An entire packages of new ponytail holders for $1 (Mine are all falling apart but even in Wal-Mart I find them to be expensive and kept putting off buying them.) A small snake beanie baby for Nick. Spent about $30 today. That's kind of high but the monopoly game was $4 and I ended up buying Dan a singing Christmas dog at that sale for $3. Those prices were kind of high but like I said, I was tired.

Sounds like you had a good day!

I actually had a sale today. I think I'll stick to selling at the tailgate sales in town from now on. I only had about 13 shoppers and sold about $85.00 worth of stuff. I could say it wasn't worth the time, but at least now everything has been gone through and I can easily pack up the few best items and box up the rest for a local church charity. The remaining big items will be put on Craigslist for free.

Wow, Bright! What a great deal. I love those ornaments with the stripes--those are so neat. Now you need to go over to the crafts forum and locate Oddie's ornament wreaths that she made last year. They were so pretty, and these would sure make a nice one. I feel the same way as Jane and Betty about the crochet ones--I so admire anyone who can make things like that, but so often family members are just so used to them that they don't realize the talent and time that has gone into making them. I have to admit, our yard sales have been a bit off this year, some subdivisions that usually have the whole subdivision did not even have them this year, but this is always a good one where I got all these things. Actually got most of it at one sale! You ladies would have gone wild, her whole driveway was tables & tables of fall & xmas decor!!! The rooster charges are a three different roosters, not all the same. I'm hoping there will still be some more good ones, I feel like I've made a huge dent in my tablescaping hobby, but wouldn't mind finding more! LOL (greedy)!!!!

Polly929... Be prepared. Our town does this every year. Maps are given out, it is really nice. Only problem is that with so much competition sales can be really slow. We have ours a few weeks before and always after the first of month when pockets are fuller. Clothing is a hard item to sell. Sometimes it goes, sometimes not. One year I noticed my dh has a drawer full of new socks that he did not really like but did not really tell me. So they sat there. I took the whole drawer and stopped by one of the local churches I pass daily going to work. They serve the homeless on certain days. I stopped to give the new, clean socks last fall. I was literally hugged by the director. Socks are something that the folks really need but no one ever donates, especially new ones. I feel really good knowing that every day I drive by I know that I have touched the lives of those less fortunate in a truly appreciated way. Dolls or toys to the emergency shelter for children taken from their parents in the middle of the night is a really great place to take things too. I start my sale a week early. I take the things I have been gathering throughout the year and make piles in my livingroom according to what section of the sale they belong. I take the clothing and make piles on my table. This also makes it easier to carry out in the morning of the sale. You can price some items and make signs for the clothing. Pants, shirts, mens, womens, etc. You can draw a pic for those who may not read English and point to the sign when trying to converse. Save those horrible grocery bags and recycle to those who buy a lot. After the sale, you can select the really valuable items you want to save for next years sale and the rest you need to donate to the local hospice thrift or such. It is a tax writoff at least and goes to a great cause. If there are things they will not take, post on craigslist as free and leave a time and address for them to be picked up. My coworker does this, leaves it out front and it is gone before she goes out for the morning paper. I live on a busy corner so I can leave it out without folks knowing which house it came from. You can make a lot or a little. Just remember that something is only worth what someone else will pay you. So that item you may have paid $20 for may only be worth someone else paying $5. Negotiate a little and don't take it personal. Then do something nice with whatever you make. Congrats and Woot Woot!

That's not too bad Lydia. Better than my last sale I think. I had more shoppers but made much less.

I realized I only spent about $25 today, not $30. I hit Goodwill later and didn't spend much there this week either. I bought a pair of jeans for $6 (from the Nine West VAC collection). Two small paperback cookbooks for 47 cents each, one cookbook for $1.97 and a 2-pack of fabric cubes (I love them for storing toys), for $1.99. Those are $10 in Target. They are mocha which is the perfect color for us too.

I had to hit Wal-Mart for a few things I needed and couldn't buy at yard sales or Goodwill and I wasn't tempted to buy anything else besides what I came for. Even Wal-Mart prices look ridiculously high compared to yard sales and Goodwill!

We used to have almost full page ads in the weekend paper for Yard/Garage sales peole would come from out of town to shop then a year or so ago the city passed a lae that you could only have two a year and had to pay a fee to get your permit. since then there might be a dzen or so in the paper. I think it was an infringement on our right personaly I don't mind paying a fee but only two a year is so restrictive IMHO

For the first time today, I noticed a permit displayed at a yard sale in a neighboring town. I had never seen one before although I've been to plenty of yard sales in that town. I don't know if it was something new or if I had just never noticed them.

I used to enjoy going to yard sales when my GS was a youngster, and finding great things for him.

Let's see, we got a huge (6'+) tree/plant for our church at an estate sale for $20 and a TV for our DS's college dorm for $30. At a yard sale in my neighborhood, I got 3 grilling cookbooks for $1 each and for $5 I got this tall glass vase with 5 tall champagne flutes in it. I am always looking for something tall for the mantle. DH got an office chair for $10 and a pair of Vise grips for $1.

Generally more than we usually spend but a good day.

Both DD's and Drew and I were out shopping the city wides today. DD got a couple of the UnderArmour shirts for Hunter for $3 each. Just like new, they are $30 a piece she said!
She got a like new pair of skater jeans for Hunter for another $3, still look as dark as the day they were bought home from the store. Drew got some toys and Minnesota Twins cap and a new John Deere long sleeved shirt. Madison and I went later in the morning once she came up, she found a cute red and black jumper with red turtle neck shirt for $5, two pair of boots for $4 each, a pair of hot pink sequinned tennie's for a buck and a new book, oh a pink Minnesota Twin's hoodie too. I found 2 square tray type pictures from At Home America, both coffee themed and I have coffee things in my kitchen and dining room they were $1 each so I was happy. I love going to sales, sometimes I hit it big and sometimes not. Today wasn't one of the better days...but we had fun.
