Have you gone to the Ellen show?

I'm curious about the process of getting tickets to the Ellen show. I'd love to go, and finally found an available date early enough to fill out and submit the online form. The website says they will call if I get the tickets.

But ... how soon do they call? The taping date is just under two months away. It would be nice to be able to make airline and hotel reservations, etc., early enough to get discounts.

A friend who went to Oprah didn't get the call until two weeks before the show. I'm really hoping I don't have to wait THAT long.

Have never been but would love to! I think Ellen is a wonderful person. Wish I could answer your question but perhaps someone else will pop in soon.

Oh, what fun. Hope it works out for you. Our youngest daughter went to the Jay Leno show years ago. We have her on tape as they scanned the audience. She said it was a blast.

I had a small succulent phase with over 500 species, then a dwarf fern phase growing from spores. All indoors and all gone now. I now have 2 houseplants - an Apidistra in a bathroom and a variegated fig rescued from the office. If I had to identify phases, I'd say it was moving from a bedazzled collection phase to a design phase, not so much collection of species anymore. Not claiming to be any good at design, but I'm trying. For a long time everything that grew was attractive to me. I bought 1 or 3 of everything. Got catalogs in the mail and drove to Bluestone for their annual June sale. Took cuttings everywhere I went. Couldn't throw out a living plant. Finally matured to the point of understanding editing was needed - like subtracting 100 mature trees overcrowding us and this fall - a 25 yo weeping mulberry will bite the dust along with the overpruned hemlocks around it. Had a hosta phase, a good useful plant but no more thanks A lily phase, now have quite enough and this has been the best year ever for them and I'm pretty much unmoved and thinking its now too much of a good thing. A dahlia phase - the thing that keeps dahlias good for me is that I have to wait to see them take their turn in the garden. I think it was you Kevin that talked about peony time, how we look forward to it and how we wouldn't want it to stretch on forever just because its so special, it should be treasured and then over. Same for me and dahlias. I don't save them anymore either. This also has probably kept them in positive light. There were small phases in epimediums, daisy shapes, buddleia, woodland plants, fruiting shrubs and trees. The biggest phase change has been converting from plant collector to trying to put together an overall pleasing effect. I'm trying to go from Collection Cacophony to 4 Season Harmony. I've spent a couple years on bloom succession. Definitely still a work in progress. I already know my next phase is Maintenance Reduction and Removal of Shrubs that never should have been put there to begin with. I think I'm going to be rather bold about this. 4 plants I find repeatable all over the property are Carex Evergold, red or white nicotiana reseeding in place, Jacob Kline red monarda and Helleborus orientalis. The phases of gardening have been humbling for me, I think there have been life lessons in them. Mostly about figuring out what really matters and not sweating the small stuff.

Some good speakers at the RI show this year - Ken Druse is on at 1:00 pm Saturday, February 21. I really like his books and, unless I'm mistaken, he's a good speaker. Karl Gercens is at noon on both Friday & Saturday - I haven't seen him before, but he's from Longwood Gardens (PA). Paul Miskovsky, an expert in xeriscaping from Falmouth, is doing 3 different talks; he's very involved in MassHort, and did the main display garden with Allen Haskell for several years at the NE show. Then there's the Designer Forum - I've been meaning to get to that for years but ... maybe this year!

Well, I thought I was being barred there for a while! Just tried to log in and had to try a number of times before it let me back into the site. It seemed to be remembering my password, when I've never actually ticked the box, but didn't accept it, even when I typed it in again correctly. Oh dear... I have popped in from time to time but everyone appeared to be hybernating! Have to say that I was proud of a little invention of mine this winter. Like everyone, my pond's been iced up at times. A while ago I came back from a trip away to find snow had weighed down the netting over my pond and stopped the football from moving about on the surface, effectively causing the whole pond to freeze over. Even though I keep the pond as clear as I can of decaying leaves, etc. I was worried about my fish and other creatures living below the ice, so I melted holes in the surface with pans of boiling water. Then, being a great believer in the 'It'll come in handy one day' theory, I cut a couple of pieces off an old (bendable) vacuum cleaner tube that I'd kept. Next, I tied string around one end of the tube and threaded it through different holes inside a plastic plant pot, to cover the end of each tube, then tied it. (Are you still with me?!)This stays on the edge of the pond, the other end being put below the water, deeper than the level ice could reach. (The plant pot is there in case it snows again and blocks the vent end outside of the water.) I'm hoping we've seen the worst of the weather here in London, but I shall certainly use my invention again next year. Big Kid

In what way is that little cutting dying? It doesn’t need ‘saving’. It just needs consistent sensible care. Over the time you’ve been posting I think a lot of your losses have been due to constantly fiddling with your plants and disregarding advice. Growing stuff shouldn’t be stressful. Quite the opposite.

Yes, I went and had a great time.

I live in the general vicinity. It was in Burbank then, but I think she broadcasts from a different studio now.

Jodi got the tickets and I seem to remember she waited a long time for them. Maybe she will see this and give her input.

What fun! But, don't volunteer for any of Ellen's games. LOL! But, what fun to dance with Ellen.

I'm trying to budget about $600 for the trip but it's hard to know for sure ... if I could book the flight now, the costs are running about $350. I'm afraid that portion will be significantly higher if they don't confirm until the middle of October.

I do hope they call!!

I don't recall choosing a date until I was contacted telling me there were available tickets, and that took months. Fortunately I was working from home and had a flex schedule.

Word of warning. even if you have tickets, get there and in line very, very early. There were just a handful of people in front of us when they closed the theater audience and started moving the rest of the line into a room directly behind the stage. It was kind of a fun room but they kept it freezing cold I think so you'd dance to Ellen's music. LOL I know my DH and I did and won a t-shirt for our efforts.

As the show wrapped up, they took us all to the parking lot where Ellen and Matthew McConahay BBQed steaks.

Would have preferred to sit in the audience but still had a good time.

I've been to The View, Live with Regis and Kelly, The Rachel Ray Show, and the Letterman Show in New York and one of the things they always state is that having a ticket is not a definite confirmation that you will get in. So even when we have tickets we get in line a hour or more ahead of the time they tell us. We've never been turned away but we have been there when they have VIP guests that they have to seat and I'm sure the latecomers lost their seats.

Thank you for your experience, Jodi. I was assuming that if we had tickets, we could just waltz in and be seated. It never crossed my mind about the "overflow" room altho she refers to it on her shows from time to time. If I get to go, I'll be sure to get in line EARLY. What time do they tape?

On the website now, there are calendars and if tickets are available it says so. Otherwise the date is greyed out. Of the available dates, you click the date you want, and then fill out & submit a form. The date I selected isn't available any more, so they must have received enough submissions. I'm sure they have to take into account that some people will not take the tickets after all.

My friend at work had a teen daughter who loved the "Regis and Kathy Lee (Gifford) Show" on ABC mornings. The Mom got tickets for the show as a birthday gift for the daughter. But when they arrived at the taping, they were informed noone under 18 was allowed in. The daughter started to cry. Regis Philbin somehow heard about it and came out and apologized to the girl and gave her an autograph. Classy guy. I know this is off-topic. Just a nice experience. I like hearing good things about celebrities, not just the bad stuff.

Never been to the Ellen Show, but have been to The View, Rachel Ray, Wendy Williams, and just got back today from The Nate Berkus Show (to premiere 9/13).

Generally, we know anywhere from 3-6 weeks ahead of time if we got the tickets. But, even with tickets, if you don't get in line early enough, you can be turned away. They tell you what time to get in line, and we always get there much earlier than what they say.

It's a long, grueling process with the outside waiting, then they shuffle you inside to a "holding room" for quite a while, then to the studio. But, the outcome is usually a lot of fun.

Not sure how Ellen works, but probably similar.
