Where have you all gone

The last time I looked on here there were a few regulars left like Big kid and chipawacat and dampflippers it was just a bit slow but over the last few months it has died a death. Is anyone still ponding out there. I thought my forum was slow for the winter but it is thriving compared to here. (thankyou everyone)

I first got into ponding by reading these pages and enjoyed the many 'friends' that were posting regularly. It is a shame that it isn't continuing in the same vein.

It used to be very busy didn't it? I think some people left because of the adverts, but I'm not really sure.
I wonder if all the ice will have affected our ponds this year.

Well, I thought I was being barred there for a while! Just tried to log in and had to try a number of times before it let me back into the site. It seemed to be remembering my password, when I've never actually ticked the box, but didn't accept it, even when I typed it in again correctly. Oh dear...

I have popped in from time to time but everyone appeared to be hybernating!

Have to say that I was proud of a little invention of mine this winter. Like everyone, my pond's been iced up at times. A while ago I came back from a trip away to find snow had weighed down the netting over my pond and stopped the football from moving about on the surface, effectively causing the whole pond to freeze over. Even though I keep the pond as clear as I can of decaying leaves, etc. I was worried about my fish and other creatures living below the ice, so I melted holes in the surface with pans of boiling water. Then, being a great believer in the 'It'll come in handy one day' theory, I cut a couple of pieces off an old (bendable) vacuum cleaner tube that I'd kept. Next, I tied string around one end of the tube and threaded it through different holes inside a plastic plant pot, to cover the end of each tube, then tied it. (Are you still with me?!)This stays on the edge of the pond, the other end being put below the water, deeper than the level ice could reach. (The plant pot is there in case it snows again and blocks the vent end outside of the water.) I'm hoping we've seen the worst of the weather here in London, but I shall certainly use my invention again next year.

You can buy growbags in most garden centres and DIY sheds I know, but not usually black, mostly garish yellow and the like with flowers and fruit printed on them. Brian

Kate, what a beautiful tribute to some exquisite roses. I think it would have about killed me to lose an Eden Climber that looked like yours--those magnificent blooms! I love the mass of creamy color that Buff Beauty produces, too. All are lovely. By the way, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone" was sung by so many artists that I can see why you couldn't remember just which one. First sung by Pete Seeger in 1955 (too far back for even me); then, I believe Peter Paul, and Mary sang it. But the iconic recording I remember best, at age 19, was that of Joan Baez in 1965, and it became a protest song against the Vietnam War. Lesley, I am sorry Golden Celebration didn't work out for you because yours was so gorgeous--it's also one of my favorite roses, but blackspot isn't a problem here, and that can make all the difference. Don't beat yourself up about New Dawn--I rid myself of 5 of them, all of which were once bloomers and monsters. During that brief bloom period in spring, I admit they were gorgeous monsters. Sara-Ann, your two Queen Elizabeth roses were simply beautiful, and I can see why you want to replace them. Why did you lose them, if I may ask? I've lost a few (by my own hand), but I don't have a single photo of any of them. It's probably for the best. But thank you all for sharing those you have loved and lost. Diane

I’m so glad to read all the conversation about everone’s thoughts and experiences in each of your own neck of the woods. In the several weeks since my last post, I have slowly noticed changes around my feeders. We now have about a dozen bluebirds who are daily visitors. They began coming even before the recent arctic weather we’ve been experiencing here in the NE lately. Same for the woodpeckers - downy, hairy, and red bellied, and cardinals. Before the cold blast, we had more chickadees than we do now. We had less than a handful of goldfinches, but now their numbers are ever so slowly creeping up. Not too many nuthatches or titmice, but a few that frequent daily. A couple of squirrels have returned. Interestingly, my husband has a friend who feeds squirrels exclusively and his friend said the population of those that are regulars at his house nearly all but disappeared! Also, last week we heard about a gentleman in his 90’s in our town who has fed the birds for over 40 years! He experienced the same mass feeding frenzy near summer’s end that I did, then the complete drop off of any birds to be seen at all. He says he’s never experienced this in all his years of bird feeding that he recalls. We were going through nearly 2x’s the amount of seed than normal, to all of a sudden having seed sit out and basically spoil because it was hardly even touched for weeks on end. With the frigid temperatures, I have noticed an increase in the hawks eyeing our feeder birds. They have been unable to find food in the woods and areas they normally frequent due to a tremendous amount of snow and have, unfortunately, captured some of our unsuspecting feathered friends. They are quite bold, and hard to scare off, which is also unusual. And yes, we also have some feeder birds that seem unbothered by my presence at the feeders while filling them, and don’t fly away til I’m nearly on top of them! This year has certainly been a very interesting year in the local bird world!

That sounds like a great invention.
I think only healthy fish will have been able to get through without any problems from this long hard winter. When the ice came it killed only one of my fish but my sister in law lost 5 large Koi and my mother in law lost at least 8 frogs and 3 or 4 fish as they froze under the heavy thickness. Only the beginning of spring will tell how bad it really has been. There doesn't seem to be any let up in the coldness. My pond is still frozen in places but the fish and frogs seem to be coping. Spring can't be far away though as the plants are starting to rear their heads and buds are appearing. I love the spring flowers and am quite excited that the daffs are about 2-3 inches high now at the side of the pond.

Hi Alison,

Sorry to hear about everyone's fish and frog losses - how sad for you all. It's usually warmer here in London than it is back home in Liverpool, but not this year. I guess Yorkshire must be even colder, as it's that much further north. Just goes to show, with all your experience and knowledge, Mother Nature has the final say and there's nothing we can do about it. I shall keep my fingers crossed that there are no more casualties when spring finally arrives in Leeds.

I finally bought myself a digital camera and I'm really looking forward to testing it out on the dragonflies and damselflies that pay me a visit. Haven't won the lottery, so I had to compromise on the price, but I think it will be okay for close-ups. Only time will tell. I still have the instructions on how to upload to the gallery that someone posted for me a long time ago. Was it Dampflippers? Can't remember, but thanks again, whoever you are.
