We were visiting my step-father the other day. He was hesitant to tell us, but then what the heck.

He'd bought a food-saver suction machine while Mom was in the hospital and he's been having a great time vacuuming food.

He bought 2 loaves of French bread last week and thought, I'll just suck the air out of the bag to keep 1 loaf fresh!

He turned the machine on, and watched the bread get smaller and smaller. When it turned off, he had the smallest brown piece of "bread" he'd ever seen. He felt so stupid, but I think it's cute!

I'm still laughing writing this.

I know the feeling, since I did that myself when I first got my food saver. Ruined a really good loaf of banana bread :) Now I know to freeze it first. Tell him he's not alone!

I'm picturing it, and it made me laugh,too. Did you know, you can place food in a plastic bag, suck the air out with a straw, and then freeze? I do it all the time.

My husband has wanted to move us to Colorado for years and hasn't managed to quite convince me yet, although I think it's absolutely wonderful there. LOL So, Winter Solstice is the same everywhere? (LOL)... I guess you're seeing how little I know... Nancy - Thanks for the tip! I am gonna have to watch the lead hand myself as I way oversowed my cantaloupes this fall. The poor babies are fighting each other and giving me 2 to 5 inches fruits that don't look like they're EVER going to full ripen. I will be much more careful in the future. I'll try to not get TOO excited when I go to plant. LOL Carrie - Wow! That's some really good info. That's exactly the kind of thing I was worried about. I'm grateful for the heads up. Liz - LIZ!!! Hey, girl! Fancy meeting you here and there and now here! hee hee... The whole last paragraph of what you wrote is exactly what is concerning me. I know that I personally wear shorts through-out almost the whole winter except for those few crazy days that we see. 50's or what have you is not cold to me... We do get the occasional freeze, but then a week or two later at most you could have a 70+ degree high! All this in the same few days / weeks / months... it's SO crazy! The kosher salt will still measure differently even after its run through a spinning FP blade. Breaking up the kosher in a food processor will dull the blades, and will still give variable crystal sizes. Many butcher supply houses have meat brining salt, which is the same as pickling in its texture and granule size. Virginia is a home for cured smoked hams, and I bet that there are several locations that can supply the brining salt, but be sure it doesn't contain any nitrates. I bought a 10 pound pail from a meat procesing supplier and it will last years. The cost was about $20.00, but at that time, shipping wasn't as high as it is now. When do home canning especialy pickling, I always prefer to have enough of each and every ingredient, so I don't run out or go crazy looking someplace in a panic. There are also 2-3 pund jars from Ball and Mrs. Wages. I just want to make usre your adding the proper amount of salt to water. Because the brine is supposed to do both fermenting and also preventing the cabbage from spoiling, its very important to get it right. Another option is to figure out the weight needed for the brine salt and then compare its weight with your kosher. You may be surprised that it could be a lot less or a lot more. I am referred to as "the tick magnet" in my household. It is not uncommon for me to walk across the lawn, spend 10 minutes in the veggie garden, and come in with a tick. I've gotten so I can spot a wood tick sitting on the top of a plant, waving its little legs and waiting to grab hold. I'm going to repeat what I said in the post from last fall that Claire linked. I live on an old farm with a mix of field, brushy growing-up field, and woods. I use bug dope with DEET, though I put it only on my clothing and I don't always use it. I own several pairs of the pyrethrin impregnated socks and I tuck my pant legs into them. (Along with my bug net during black fly season I usually look pretty dorky when I am out in the garden.) I don't really worry about ticks because during the height of the season I might find 6 or 8 on me over the course of a day, but I do take them seriously. Instead of worrying, I do a complete visual and touch check whenever I come into the house in the spring and fall. Clothes get stripped off and examined along with my body. I again do a complete visual and fingertip check at bedtime every night (until it gets too cold for the ticks to be active) standing nekkid in front of a mirror so that I can see places like under my arms and the middle of my back, etc. in case I missed any the first time around. I also comb my hair with a comb having close-set teeth and do a careful touch examination of my entire scalp. Clothing I take off doesn't go into the bedroom. I view that nightly 15 minutes as the dues I pay for being able to get out beyond the lawn areas at my house. When we first moved here I used to freak out about getting a tick, but there are so many (mostly wood ticks, though there are some deer ticks) that I just don't have the energy to get worked up about them. I'd rather put the energy in to doing careful checks afterwards since it takes a day or more for a tick to get seated and spread disease. I do this check religiously, every single night, even if I have not worked in the garden. It's part of my bedtime routine, like brushing my teeth. It is my understanding (and fits in with my observations here) that rodents are a large part of the cause of the "deer" (more accurately referred to as "black-legged") tick problem, so the tick tubes, which target the application of permethrin specifically to rodents, make good sense. I haven't used them, however, and studies vary in their evaluation of effectiveness. Last season was the first we had appreciable numbers of black-legged ticks, so we are just starting serious consideration of management for them. I haven't previously seen reference to nematodes as good for controlling ticks, so I did some reading. It seems like around here they aren't too effective since nematodes live in the soil, and when are ticks are in or on the ground, it's too cold for the nematodes to be effective. They are also more effective on adults that the nymphs that often spread disease. However, I did come across a fungus that it supposed to be better in this part of the country, Metarhizium anisopliae, that has met with EPA approval for tick control. Unfortunately, it appears to still be in the product development stages. As others have mentioned, keeping areas with brush or long grass mowed will help reduce shelter areas for ticks, and reducing areas like stone walls where rodents hide will help as well.

Awww, who doesn't like to pop bubble wrap once in a while. Looked it up to watch and that was cute. DH has Weather Tech stuff for his truck. Not so needed now that he's retired, but it really did keep it cleaner (and trade in values up) when he was working and could be muddy or rained on. He's a vehicle neat freak. Always clean inside and out (and does the same for my car). Had to order, no stores around anywhere close that I've ever seen. I've been using the same mats in my last three Explorers and the mats still look brand new. Made in England and purchased from the Herrington catalog that I think may no longer be in business. They were not inexpensive but I've certainly gotten my mileage and money worth from them :) If I buy new this year like I'm tentatively planning and they still fit, I'll use them again.

That IS funny...even for me. I have had a vac sealer for 20+ years and recently did the very same thing....and had a "shocked look on my face" when I saw what I did. What's with that?

The funny thing, he's been a mechanic/service manager all his life. LOVES tools, gadgets, computer stuff, etc etc. He hasn't worked on his car himself for years...gets it done at the dealership he still works at (been there 52 years!), but has a ton of tools.

Hence the food-saver.....one more mechanical tool! LOL

LOL!!! I did that the first time I froze baked goods too. I then learned FREEZE first!!! I do the same with soup or anything that has a lot of juice to it. Freeze it then put it in the vacuum bags.

Jannie this goes along with your straw tip. A long time ago I read someewhere that if you immerse your freezer bag of food in water leaving just a corner of it out so it pushes all of the air out and then close it up, your food lasts much longer in the freezer and doesnt get freezer burned. Thats what I do.

I've never had a vacummn sealer thingie... now I know the trick... but oh my, you wrote such a wonderful visual event for me!!!

One of the examples of it are putting marshmallows in a jar, then vacuum sealing it. Without the gravity, they expand, probably double in size. Then put them in a bag, vacuum seal them and you'll flatten them.

For storing soft items, or even liquids, put them into a container to protect it put it in a bag and then vacuum seal. You can even cover it and poke some holes in the container and a good vacuum sealer will still draw the air out.

I don't use the bags for vacuum sealing. I mostly use canning jars or the vacuum containers. If and when I start using it more (again) I'll probably start using some bags again. They're just a little spendy.

No need for him to feel stupid. It's a learning experience.

Good picture-story ... in a few words.

I often store stuff for the freezer in milk bags, about 7" long and 4" wide, which are thicker than all but the heaviest so-called freezer bags, resulting in fewer holes as frozen stuff bumps around in the freezer.

Sometimes I just gather the top in my hand, hold it up to my mouth, and pull!

And I'm a pretty good sucker! Gets almost all of the surplus air out ... and takes less space in the freezer.

Haven't tried my method on bread ... but doubt that my sucking ability would shrink it much!

My bread machine-made bread is fairly heavy, which would add to the stress.
