I know the feeling, since I did that myself when I first got my food saver. Ruined a really good loaf of banana bread :) Now I know to freeze it first. Tell him he's not alone!

I'm picturing it, and it made me laugh,too. Did you know, you can place food in a plastic bag, suck the air out with a straw, and then freeze? I do it all the time.

Tell him he made me laugh, nothing like laughing at ourselves. I do it all the time. lol

That IS funny...even for me. I have had a vac sealer for 20+ years and recently did the very same thing....and had a "shocked look on my face" when I saw what I did. What's with that?

And sometimes, when you let air into the bag, the bread sort of re-inflates!

The funny thing, he's been a mechanic/service manager all his life. LOVES tools, gadgets, computer stuff, etc etc. He hasn't worked on his car himself for years...gets it done at the dealership he still works at (been there 52 years!), but has a ton of tools.

Hence the food-saver.....one more mechanical tool! LOL

LOL!!! I did that the first time I froze baked goods too. I then learned FREEZE first!!! I do the same with soup or anything that has a lot of juice to it. Freeze it then put it in the vacuum bags.

Jannie this goes along with your straw tip. A long time ago I read someewhere that if you immerse your freezer bag of food in water leaving just a corner of it out so it pushes all of the air out and then close it up, your food lasts much longer in the freezer and doesnt get freezer burned. Thats what I do.

I f I had one, I would have probably done the same thing. If I ever get one, I'll know better. Thanks for sharing.

I've never had a vacummn sealer thingie... now I know the trick... but oh my, you wrote such a wonderful visual event for me!!!

One of the examples of it are putting marshmallows in a jar, then vacuum sealing it. Without the gravity, they expand, probably double in size. Then put them in a bag, vacuum seal them and you'll flatten them.

For storing soft items, or even liquids, put them into a container to protect it put it in a bag and then vacuum seal. You can even cover it and poke some holes in the container and a good vacuum sealer will still draw the air out.

I don't use the bags for vacuum sealing. I mostly use canning jars or the vacuum containers. If and when I start using it more (again) I'll probably start using some bags again. They're just a little spendy.

No need for him to feel stupid. It's a learning experience.

I often store stuff for the freezer in milk bags, about 7" long and 4" wide, which are thicker than all but the heaviest so-called freezer bags, resulting in fewer holes as frozen stuff bumps around in the freezer.

Sometimes I just gather the top in my hand, hold it up to my mouth, and pull!

And I'm a pretty good sucker! Gets almost all of the surplus air out ... and takes less space in the freezer.

Haven't tried my method on bread ... but doubt that my sucking ability would shrink it much!

My bread machine-made bread is fairly heavy, which would add to the stress.
