Some Publishers have quit making hardcover books

It was on the news that some major publishers have stopped making hardcover books and going strictly to e-books, due to the popularity of Kindle, etc.

They are making more money, quicker with e-books.

I for one, would hate not having books. Whether it's a cookbook or a novel, or a magazine, nothing (in my mind) beats holding it in my hand and turning the pages.

I did a search and found an article about Amazon selling more ebooks then hard cover books, but the article I found said there was an important caveat and that was that Amazon didn't disclose how ebook sales compared to their entire book sales, meaning hardcover plus paperback. I suspect the news article you heard also was comparing to hardcover only and didn't take paperbacks into account. As expensive as hardcover books are, I would expect paperback sales are much higher.

Like you, jasdip, I don't think anything can replace actually holding a book in your hands!

dorchester publishing is one of the companies. It's talking about books of all kinds, not just hardcover per se.

Some of our Canadian ones have followed suit, apparently.

Sad, really to think that upcoming generations may not hold and feel the pleasure of a physical book.
Gone the way of penmanship, math and grammar skills.

Maybe these self-styled authors compose on their phones as I sometimes do. I blame my often tortured syntax and misplaced punctuation on the size of the screen. I need to see the whole piece to ascertain whether I'm making any sense, but if I can see everything I need a magnifying glass to read it. However, if I enlarge it, I can read only about ten words at a time so l lose track of the antecedents, and I wind up writing a mess. If I try to edit, I make a bigger mess. Annpan, I've 'inhaled' some beautiful coastlines. I like that wording. :-) However: ...his broad shoulders that ran like a cylinder down to his hips. This fella had a strange anatomy! I'm entertained by the very thought.

Why some books get publshed, and some do not

My theory is that in many cases, poor books get published because the author knows the right people. Good books get rejected because the author doesn't know anyone in the field. It's all about who you know. Most publishers won't glance at a book unless it is represented by an agent. Finding an agent, again, unless you know someone who knows someone who's step-brother is in the business can be very difficult. I know this is a very pessimistic view of the industry, but I think it is all in the connections. Stephen King's wife and son are both published writers... is the son any good? Have you ever read his stuff? Likewise, S.K.'s wife was published before he was and took S.K.'s manuscript of Carrie to her agent. Would he have been able to find an agent on his own without her connections? We will never know. The days of tossing book manuscripts over the transom are gone. There are too many unsolicited manuscripts and the people reading "the slush pile" are the lowest guys on the totem pole. Over-worked and under-paid. I say that it is akin to breaking into modeling or the movies these days. Yes, unknowns DO get in, yes, unknowns do become successful, but when a big money-maker like John Grisham comes to you and says, "Hey, my cousin wrote a book that should be published.", you tend to do what he wants because he brings in so much cash for you and ignore the unknowns because you've only got the money and the time to publish a finite number of books. (this is just an example and not based on any facts at all.) And it's no longer about publishing the best books, but the books that will make the most money. And I tend to think of RP-ers as the minority of readers who look for both content and quality of writing... we are not necessarily the mainstream. Just my two little pennies. PAM

Publishing is not an easy task unless you decide to use a vanity press. But aside from the travails of the publishing world....I would suggest that you first actually compile the book. I don't mean this as negative advice but more a reality check. It takes constant personal discipline to produce a tome of any size. Carving out time in each day...or whatever writing schedule you chose...demands that you actually sit down and write during that time period. The first few hours...maybe even days...it seems an easy task but as experience has taught me...it can become a demanding uphill battle at some point in the process. Complete the book. Compile and categorize the illustrations. Create a complete package. Decide what you're willing to sacrifice in the impersonal editing process. And then start the journey of looking for an agent and a publisher. Look for current editions of "Novel & Short Story Writer's Market" and "Writer's Market" They're sold on line as well as in most large book stores. They're excellent informational/tool sources for answers to all your questions. Most of all...good luck. It's a sometimes daunting task but a very rewarding one if you're truly motivated and stick to it. I've been down this road and I can say with a certainty that the first time you see your name in print you'll forget all about the rocky road it took to get it there. But...I can't guarantee you that it'll be easy. It's not. Not by a long shot.

Hurray! I'd heard about this book from the author, Judy Polinsky, at a couple Great Rosarians of the World programs at the Huntington. She said she was working on a book, and that it would be published sometime in the future. I just found it online today (available for pre-order). Judy made some fabulous desserts at these events, and those of us in attendance got to try them. Delicious! She told me about the work done (by her and someone else at the Huntington, will have to look up her name) in testing which roses were best for making desserts. Certain roses were great, others were not so much (their rose water went bad or didn't translate well from the scent of the rose into anything useable once extracted). I am all for progress but not at the loss of our history. It's pretty hard to hand down a family kindle where as my family bible has everyone's handwritten notes in it. My mom's cookbook is full of her personalization on her favorite recipes.

What can possibly replace hearing that crackling of the spine that accompanies the first time you open a new book, or the smell of the leather in a wonderful library? Or the spots on the pages where teardrops fell on the pages of a tearjerker?

I'm glad for the saving of the trees and the green aspect of electronic books but when you really think about it that has little to nothing to do with it. Books can be shared, I pass mine on to friends who in turn pass theirs on to me, we loosely coordinate what we are buying in that way. I'm quite sure that the publishers figured out that they will sell more with a Kindle or a Nook, or can one 'share' or forward that ebook on to a friend?

textbook wise paper books will become dinosaurs in a very short time. thou costs for textbooks will not change, as publishers do charge the same price for ebooks. this aspect of publishing is going to suffer as it is FAR easier to share or steal ebooks, equating to loss of profits quickly. in fact college students who pay thousands for books a semester are relishing books going to ebooks. :-) we spend $5000 a yr for textboooks for my DH (mechanical engineering), only buying from asian printers too, costs that we pay out of pocket because tuition is barely covered. ~ liz

I'm sure the Kindle is great, but I go to the library every other Saturday, get 5-6 books, free, so I don't need one. I would hate to see paper books go altogether!

Hardback books may one day disappear. They're expensive to print and heavy to ship and people would rather wait for the softcover version.

I've written and published eight books, and all of those have been bound in what's called a "perfect binding" which is a softcover book that's economical to produce but longlasting.

Speaking as a big bibliophile (lover of books), I don't think "real" books will ever go away. However, the publishing world is changing very quickly, and if you look at the NY Times best seller list (as I often do), 98% of the authors on that "list of success" are celebrities, well-known political figures and/or famous (previously published) authors.

It's mighty tough for an unconnected newbie to break into the world of big house publishers. Most opt for self-publishing. BTW, authors make 10% of the book's wholesale price for every title sold. In other words, a book that sells on Amazon for $20 makes $1 for its author.

Authors are the original starving artists.

the one thing I think about with the Kindle is...if you buy/download books to it ...and a few years go by...they become obsolete...then you will lose all those books.

I like keeping my books...although I will say...I'm soon going to have to build a library..8)
