Update on our trip to Oklahoma State Fair

DH and I have gone to the state fair here for 20 years. This year was our last!!

Everything had gone up. I mean, you expect food at the fair to be overpriced, but we couldn't believe how expensive food was. Small gyro sandwich...$7.00. Caramel apple...$5.00. Drink...$4.00.

The worst part? They didn't have any tractors!!! (Well, Ford New Holland...but NO other brand.)

With an $8.00 admission price, I dont' know how families afford to go.

We heard the Kansas State Fair is much better, so we are heading north next year.

We talked about going. I said going once every 10 years is sufficient. I haven't been to the zoo in years & years and want to go there instead.

I'm sorry it was disappointing. I hope you got to include something else while you were here.

Rita, I find I have the most enjoyable time at the fair, if I go with friends. Multiple is better. :)

Yeah, food was expensive, but the face of Helen looking at all the exhibits (craft etc) was well worth all.

Going during the week also helps, not as crowded.

Bed Of Nails also known as Solanum quitoense is a relative of eggplant native to the mountains of South America. The story I heard is that the original plant in the wild did not have "nails" or spines at all. Through cultivation some forms developed the nasty spines. Throughout the regions where they are grown in S.A. there are many varieties, some with smaller leaves, some with spines only on one side, some with tons of spines. Most countries grow them for their fruit which is called by many names, two of the most popular are Naranjilla (little orange in Spanish) or Lulo in Columbia. The one growing in the plot is from "that place in Sanford", because of the high heat and dry this summer the fruit on it have little flavor. In cooler times the fruit tastes like a kiwi and is a popular flavoring in drinks down south.

Karen, most county fairs judge tomatoes and other entries in the vegetable categories on appearance only. I guess the same with the Alabama State Fair. Nonetheless ... CONGRATULATIONS!!! You asked for opinions: I think tomatoes should be judged at 4-H fairs on appearance, production, disease resistance, and flavor. A question: Were your Purple Haze plants from F1 seed or from transplants obtained from SelectedSeeds aka: Darrel Jones? Or were your plants from saved seeds from another source? Just curious at to which filial generation you grew. Bill

Liz, I remember when they had a gas explosion in the Coliseum back in I think 1963. I think there were 70 or so killed at that time. I missed the evening news on it but the latest account I had of this tragedy was five lives lost. It is my understanding that this was a large 3 part stage that is erected in front of the Grandstand on the dirt track, they do it every year. They knew bad weather was coming but they could not predict that 12 miles ahead of the rain would be this 70 mile an hour wind. They had just announced to the crowd that in case of bad weather they could to to the Pavilion for shelter. Before people could do that the wind struck. I know we had very high winds at our place some time before the rain and storms came. When the winds came, as soon as they could the kids moved their 3 vehicles down below hoping no trees or limbs would come down on them. Sue

I've gone to the Indiana State Fair as long as I could remember. Now that I have my own kiddos, I go twice :) Once with everyone, and we go with the kids' flow. And I go again with Jacob to see what we missed the first time. We have a State Fair Train which leaves about a mile from our house. It takes about 40 minutes to get to the fairgrounds, and the kids love riding the train.

The state fair in my area allow persons to bring in their own food. There are even picnic areas with tables. Nobody is forced to buy anything.

There are free days for seniors, military, and other special groups. Discounts offered by shopping at grocery stores and even free admission for donating to a local food pantry.
Even if you do pay the full $8, after you pay admission, everything the fair has to offer is FREE. The amount of entertainment, art, and educational exhibits all in one place makes for a whole day of fun. The midway is accessed through the fair but is considered a separate venue with its own gate.

It too bad your state fair does not allow food to be brought in. Maybe you could sneak in some sandwiches? They wouldn't arrest you for it would they?

it was like the local founders festival this year...(held in the downtown) the food wasn't all that good and paid as much as if we'd gone to a sit-down diner...that will be the last time we eat there!
