Army Surgery Is Over

I'm the successful kidney transplant recipient with the arm difficulties. The "fistulas" vein in my left arm where I got my dialysis for four and a half years was big and swollen. I had an operation in June to close it off ("ligation" )but it formed blood clots and remained swollen. Another surgery in July to remove the blood clots ("thrombectomy") but they came back. I was disappointed and saw another vascular surgeon, who gave me a second opinion, offering a minor procedure like the first surgeon wanted, or a more major removal of the vein with plastic surgery. I went back to vascular surgeon yesterday and he did another thrombectomy. Things went well from the start. My daughter drove me to the hospital and stayed all day with me. I was told to get there at 6:30 am, They prepped me and got the IV sedation in easily, the actual operation lasted from about 8:30 to ten, recovery went well,I was given some pain medication, some food, and sent home. We got home about noon, darling daughter Vicki made me lunch, put me to bed and then cleaned house! What a doll! I felt pretty good, my dressing isn't as tight as the others, no real pain, I just kept it propped up on pillows and rested. Today (Tuesday) I woke up early and still feel good. I'm going to the doctors office on Wednesday to have him remove the "pressure bandage." Now I'm just crossing my fingers my arm will look close to normal. Anyone else want to cross their fingers? Toes?

Sammy, Thanks. The number of hoppers has creeped me out this year. When I walk through the grass on the side of the barn, all I hear is "plink, plink, plunk" as grasshoppers rise from the grass in unison to avoid being stepped on and hit the side of the metal barn. Usually they peak in July and then their numbers start dropping, but this summer, since we were very dry all spring and didn't have good rainfall until June and July, we went into summer with a huge population, and then every time it rained, we got a new hatch of hoppers a few days later so it still seems like we have more every week than we had the week before. There's been a lot of cicadas at night---the whole loud "buzz" of all these living things at night is so loud that you can't even sleep with a window open on a cool night because they'll keep you awake. I saw a dead cicada lying in the driveway yesterday, so maybe their population is beginning to decline. There are some veggies in the garden that the hoppers ate all the way down to the ground, and I sprayed one time this summer with a chemical pesticide, or I think the hoppers would have devoured the entire garden. That's the first time I've ever sprayed my entire garden with a chemical pesticide. It killed the grasshoppers, but killed lots of beneficial insects too, so I doubt I'll ever do it again. I hated everything about it and think that in future years when the hoppers are extremely bad, I'll let them devour the garden and I'll just take up needlepoint or something for the rest of the growing season. We are at the point now where we desperately need for the blister beetles to show up in the next few weeks and devour tons of grasshopper eggs or we'll be in trouble in 2015. This is the first time I've begun actively rooting for the blister beetles to please show up here. Dawn

Karen - the tree is from Dollar General - $10.00 after Christmas sale. I went just a little crazy (because of you guys I might add) and bought 4 of them after Christmas last year and I love the way they decorate up - the branch spacing allows you to be able to fill the interior with losts of shiney balls ..... Grinch-I got lapband surgery.They want me to lose 50lbs.I lost 42 but my blood pressure would get in 80s then dr would raise my dry weight,He kept doing this like 8 times,a kilo is 3-4lbs he raised it like 8 times so I gave up.I was fighting a losing battle.He asked one day if i want to get lapband finally I said just make me an appointment. soo. I checked in hospital at 9 am ,10:30 they took me up to operating room I was there and recovery till 4:30.we got home 7:30,they said Im the first dialysis patient even in hershey to have this done.They said they had a little trouble working around my kidneys, but got it done.I got 6 holes in my stomach.\ My mouth is really dry for 3-5 days I can only have 2 T.of liquid every 1/2 hour.then for 2 weeks I can add milk ,cream soups at stage 5 I can have almost anything.lookin forward to eatting food again.

I'll be crossing fingers and toes, but I'll also be saying big-time prayers that this is the last surgery you need on your arm.

Hmm, I thought you had your surgery at a military hospital. I do hope with all my heart that your arm heals well and soon.

I was thinking of you because I found out recently that my ExH has been going to dialysis three times a week for the past year and no one told me. I was very upset. He's my kids' father so you think someone might have mentioned it. I feel very bad for him. We had our differences but I never wished him ill. I imagine it is very hard for him to be so limited in where he can go and when. I have learned a lot about it since I got the news (my older son let it slip). I have no idea what his prognosis is. He is 67.

What was it like to be on dialysis? Hugs to you.

It's Wednesday morning. I slept well last night, but when I woke up my left hand looked swollen. The bandage will be off in just a few hours. Also have an appointment at the transplant center to go over my kidney readings.

The third time WAS the charm! Bandage off yesterday, my arm looks much much better. Doc says I can leave bandage off at night, re-wrap in the morning for the next 30 days.
