Thanks to all of you for your helpful suggestions. michaelg: your response seems closest to what has happened: the standard shows signs of girdling and consequent dessication, while the sucker continues to thrive. karl: I have contacted Bailey's (thank you for the contact info); the nursery that sold it to me will replace it, which I will do in spring. according to others, it will need a full season to prepare for our winter. My neighbor's PJ has been in place three years now. elks: I suspect I could let the sucker grow into a new standard (these are OR, not grafts, of course) or let it become a shrub. My initial attraction to the plant was as a standard and I'll try to find a good one when the time comes. BC and berndooldle (Cass?): we've had an unusual summer here in St. PaulÂvery droughty, but a July without a single 90 or + temp. I've been scrupulous about watering, which I do deeply with buckets from a rain barrel; a check of the soil revealed no dryness in the first foot of soil. I don't believe it's a cultural problem; the rose has been more than adequately mulched as well. This is a disappointment, but we gardeners are used to failures. I will begin again next spring. Meanwhile: (1) I have the sucker to play with; and (2) if any of you, or others, have further suggestions, please know they are welcome. Best regards, Gary

what in the heck happened to my Sunburst 'Aeonium'

Hi Hijole, I don't know about the black spots, but I believe Aeoniums are summer dormant; don't know if it makes sense to plant it in the ground when it's going dormant. I've seen them tighten their heads to pretty small. I'd cut back on the watering if you haven't already. A couple of others on here grow them, let's see what they've got to say.

What the heck happened to my garden?!

Your fence looks about 3 feet high. I think it would only keep dogs and rabbits out. Birds, squirrels, raccoons, and deer could easily get in. But individual squirrels, at least in my experience, don't eat the entire plant, they nibble at the best parts. I'm not sure what a gaggle of squirrels would do, and a flock of birds or at least two or three large birds could eat a lot. A raccoon would bend the fence a bit where it climbed over, but I don't know if raccoons eat plants without fruit. A deer jumping in would leave some kind of depression or mark(s) where it landed. One possible way to stop deer: as mentioned already, a double fence, but you don't want to leave a space between that's large enough for the deer to land. You want the space to be too small for that, but wide enough so the deer won't be able to clear it and will have second thoughts about trying. I think deer are better at jumping heights than lengths. Since you already have a fence, the easiest solution might be an electrified wire (plus a ground wire) along the top of the fence. So welcome to the battle with the hungry animals. Everything edible that I grow is inside a metal cage of some kind, and I have an electric fence around some plum trees. And I'm trying metal cages around clusters of fruit on trees...it's the only way I can get anything for myself.

I have had the same trouble this year, ALL of my eggplants, 20 and another dozen peppers, mowed off right at the stem. I did have a woodchuck a few years ago, but got rid of him, and saw the obvious den/hole along the fenceline. I am guessing it is chipmonks this year. We have lots of bunnies but there was a fence around it that should keep them out, chippies could have crawled over/under it. I will look for groundhog holes later as well. I replanted 18 eggplants and 25 peppers, and the next day they were gone too!!!! I have 12 more eggplants, this is the last replanting. They are going in a different area and keeping my fingers crossed. I doubt it was kids, they may mess with a few but not take the time for the entire garden, it was a 4 legged critter. Oh I also had no footprints and we are getting tons of rain, which makes me think it was a very light animal, hence chipmonk.

I'm thrilled with the cooler weather! I love fall (tho it just always leads to winter and snow and ice). I've been able to keep the A/C off for a few days and have the windows open at night. So nice!

But if I had a tan, I might feel like you, wanting to keep it going for a bit longer!

Virginia will be getting a couple of days of rain, too.

But...but... but... Glenda, I love the cool weather.

Yesterday it was 83 at 5:30 PM. Last summer, 83 was the overnight low.

I LOVE the temps. This morning it is 66. It will be so nice, for the start of the Sunday morning bike ride.

The heck with a tan. It goes away over winter anyway. :)

I don't know what happened to summer, Glenda, but I sure hope it returns. I want my 80's back. Yesterday I was in a sweats outfit and wore a flannel nightgown last night. 60's are cold to me. This every day rain is getting old fast too.

I think we have had about two weeks of summer so far. I would really like some more before that ugly winter comes to stay.
