Please think of my niece's sons

I told ya'll back in April about my dear niece Barbara having brain surgery. The breast cancer has now spread further throughout her brain as well as to her spine. She is in hospital in Temple with a feeding tube & morphine pump. Oncologist said chemo would do no good, so they are just keeping her comfortable. Her nurse told me tonight she does not expect her to live till Monday.

Barbara's my twin's daughter...Neva died 10 years ago from b.c.

Her sons are in their 20s; I know they'd like for you to keep them in your thoughts. Barbara just turned 48 in June. Thanks as always to you wonderful friends. I'm just very, very sad.

Eva, I am so sorry to hear about your niece, Barbara.
I will keep her son's in my thoughts and prayers and ones for Barbara for a quiet and easy passing.

If they have snapped, it leaves room for disease. I believe defrost49 may be correct. But hey it's a garden and gardens of any type are experiments. Does your son like science? Perhaps, they will off shoot at the tops. I had a lab that ate the tops of some of my corn one time, some grew, some died. They were only about two feet tall. Also, I'm with Jim, I always wait three days. I like the number 3 such as 3 strikes your out- easy to remember. Plants will usually tell you what they are going to do in 3 days. What zone do you live in? The United States Department of Agriculture has set up plant hardiness zones nationwide. For instance where I live in NC, our county has two zones, 7A and 7B. We have about 200 possible days of growing most things. Zones are determined by lowest average temperature. So in our neck of the woods, that's about 0 to 5 F. You can find out your zone by googling "what zone is...in" Corn takes 60-100 days to mature, depends on the type. October here is a funny month, sometimes frost, sometimes not. I am planting cool season things now, but most others are finishing up, doing their canning, etc. Don't let him give up on growing things! Barnes and Noble had Square Foot Gardening 1st Edition by Mel Bartholomew on sale for about $7.00 a couple weeks ago. There is a new edition out. There is also Strawbale Gardening by Joel Karsten. I started one set of great nieces and nephews on SFG, got them some miracle grow potting soil when it was on sale and added some peat moss. This stopped us from having to scour the countryside for vermiculite which was not at the big box stores. Another set, we started straw bales because they were easy to get in their area of the country, and their parents didn't want to give up a 4x4 area so we took a 3x10 due to yard layout, it worked great. The straw bales also gave them a great start on composting. They grew top crops and when those things were spent, planted root crops. They started in fall so they were able to get straw bales free or really cheap, planted spinach, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and then in spring potatoes. Now that set has gone on to take another part of the yard over-they got the bug. They are experimenting with traditional gardening, raised beds and something else with logs -I don't remember the name. If the corn is not growing, teach him about composting. I have been very pleased with my desktop Dell for 3 1/2 years now. When I bought it, I purchased the additional warranty for a total of 3 years. When that ran out, I bought another 2 years. Recently I was out, and even though it might have been storm related (who knows) they did not hesitate to send me a new modem. In their words, "Why, I see we have never sent you anything. I'm just going to send you one, and it should be there tomorrow." Sure enough, it was, and it fixed the problem. They have helped me numerous times when I get things fouled up beyond all recognition, and we together empty it all out and reload everything back. I sure could not do that by myself, and when we are done, I have a computer that is 'like new' again. If you get it, and ever have problems, I have a Dell repair # that is not overseas, if you ever happen to need/want it. Sue

I have nothing more to offer regarding "how" to clean the mess, but definitely have a recommendation for "who" should actually be putting the elbow grease into the project. The offending son absolutely should be the person doing the cleanup and, if the pan can't be salvaged, he should purchase a new one from his own money. That being said, I'm in a never-ending training mode when it comes to keeping my husband from ruining my non-stick frypans. You would think that paying for new ones would help reinforce the "use plastic utensils" rule.

I have IBS. Diet restrictions vary from person to person. There really is no prescribed IBS diet. Everyone has to experiment on their own. I am fine with sugar and I can do some nuts but not others. Seedy things I have to be very careful with especially with fruit like berries. I can eat seeded rolls if I am eating lots of other bulk at the time. Eat them along and I will pay the price. Fruit skins also sem to affect my digestive track negatively. Tomatoes,grapes and plums are bad. Apple and pear skins are ok in small amounts. I eat gluten and wheat products without any ill effects. Of course they need to run tests and see that he doesn't have celiac or crones. But lacking thiose conditions the wheat/gluten thing is sort of a fad right now. He doesn't need to cut it out for IBS unless he needs to. Even with crones they are no longer stressing special diet. My DSIL's brother was just diagnosed.

I'm so sorry to read this and pray for a peaceful passing for your dear niece. The tiny silver lining is that her mom is waiting for her, though that's small comfort to her boys, you and the rest of the family. It sounds like the boys will be well supported--do you live close?

Oh, Eva. I had no idea. I had asked about her in an e-mail and when I got your response you didn't mention her, so I thought she must be better. I know it brings back all your memories of Neva. Bless your heart, and those boys. They're too young to lose their Mom. This disease is everywhere. Hugs to all of y'all.
