All you have to do is call the cemetery office, and give the name and any other information you have.

If it's a Roman Catholic cemetery...call the bishop's office and ask for the office of cemeteries - and they can tell you what cemetery and plot number - and even directions to the plot.

I needed a picture of my mom's brother's grave, he died when he was 2 years old. They lived in Winnipeg, Canada then and I knew I wouldn't be going there to get it so I emailed the cemetary and they went out and took a picture for me! It was raining too but the lady said it may not let up for quite awhile and she didn't mind going out in the rain to take it for me. I thouht that was very nice of her. I was so happy!

In some small Oklahoma towns, you can go to the courthouse and have them look it up. Because the plots are bought and sold, the deed information is registered there.

I met with my cousin last week at a cemetery in WV and found some ancestors. My Grandfather was supposed to be buried there but we didn't find the grave. I think perhaps only a portion of the cemetery has been taken care of and some of the graves are not visible now.

With the plot number in hand a friend and I searched for a long time only to discover my Dad's GGrandparents and his great aunt did not have a headstone. They way we discovered that was because the grave site was shared with another family and I recognized the name.

When we were first married we lived across the street from a very large old cemetery, just outside of Boston. I loved walking our dog there. I found the headstones fascinating to read. You can usually find old roses there too.

Find A grave is a good site to find records of Cemeteries.

Alisande, I think what you're doing is just great! This is so interesting to me b/c I've just begun again, after 17 yrs. to work on my family tree. Back when I was doing research, my sister and I found our GGrandparents, and our GGgrandmother's graves, but the tombstones were so old and weathered we couldn't read the epitaphs, and I LOVE the epitaphs. Anyway, we learned if we did a rubbing w/ colored chalk or charcoal on paper, we were able to read it. We brought these rubbings home and the farther away we placed them, the easier they were to read. I love old cemeteries. There's one close to us that has a monument of an angel and she has a tear on her cheek. It just touches my heart.

Here's a little cemetery story Mama told me recently. She was at the cemetery where Devil Anse Hatfield is buried. There is a statue of Devil Anse at his grave. These 2 old ladies came up to his grave and one of them said, "Ain't he purdy?".

Devil Anse Hatfield was married to my Great, great, great aunt Lavicy.

I am a volunteer on FindAGrave.com It's a very neat web site. You can look up cemeteries and or names. If you need a picture of a headstone far away from you. .just put in a request on the site and they e-mail that to the nearest volunteer in the area. I just got a request yesterday for 3 in my area. .I did e-mail them and told them I claimed the request but we are having a heat wave here in Oklahoma right now so it would be later next week till I could get out late of an evening to take the pictures. Sometimes you do have to do a lot of walking to find the grave. It's sure a lot more fun to do this in the fall or when the weather is a LOT cooler. .Susan you should check out FindAGrave. .I bet you would make a great volunter there also. .Debbie

Susan, he and Vicie had 13 children. Many women died in childbirth in those days and many times the fathers couldn't/wouldn't raise the child/children. Devil Anse and Vicie took in many of those children and gave them a home. Family was very important to him and was likely behind much of the feuding. He wouldn't stand for anyone messing with his family. He was actually a wealthy man who made his money in logging.

Debbie, thanks for the suggestion. I uploaded (to FindAGrave) the two photos I posted on the other gravestone thread, and I also volunteered to take photos. I doubt I'll have many requests from either site, but if it gets to be too much I can always beg off.

I've always found cemeteries interesting, and feel a certain obligation to read stones and "remember" the people that way.

Linda, thanks for sharing that. I had no idea. I did know about women dying in childbirth and fathers giving up the children, though. What a sad situation.

Years ago, a 90+ aged lady went and photographed my great great-grandparents' graves in Nebraska. She remembered him marching in parades wearing his Civil War uniform.
