I took my first gravestone photos today, and......

....and I had no idea how difficult it would be to locate a grave. I don't know what I was thinking . . . I sort of envisioned a tiny cemetery where I would spot the right headstone as soon as I arrived. Duh . . . I obviously need a book called Gravestone Photography for Dummies.

Fortunately, I called a friend who is a funeral director to ask for directions to the cemetery. I told him I'd received my first assignment through Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness, and was going to photograph a gravestone for a woman in Indiana. He asked how I was going to find the grave. I asked if it was a small cemetery. He laughed.

The cemetery was huge. It was also old and beautiful. My friend met me in town and led the way. He even knew which section to look in, based on the 1931 date of death. We found the stone right away.

But I can see this volunteer job isn't going to be quite as simple as it sounds! Probably I'm the only one who didn't realize this. :-)
