Blueberry plant went through a shock. Why?
Comments (12)Agricultural sulfur is unlikely to be very effective in a container situation. It can actually be much too effective. A frequent contributor in the fruit forum ended up with pH readings below three in containers that were amended with too much elemental sulfur. Yes, given the biological action that's required, it's not as effective in containers as in the soil, but that doesn't mean that it's ineffective. It just takes time. And yes, the ratio is 1 CUP of vinegar to one gallon of water - that is a 15 times dilution of a relatively weak 5% acid. Not enough of a jolt in pH to cause concern but enough to be of benefit to the plant. 1 tablespoon is not enough to have any measurable effect on pH. I don't want to be argumentative, but can you provide a reference for that claim? One tablespoon does have a measurable effect on my well water, and I don't recall ever seeing anyone recommend one cup per gallon (even for blueberries). Regardless, there's a simple way for the OP and anyone else to determine exactly how much vinegar to use -- test the pH of your irrigation water with an inexpensive test kit or strips. Comments (20)I like some your renderings on the right track with the framing ideas Palimp temp fix is lovely - again I'll echo what others have said about fireproof material within certain distances of firebox - likely 6'-12" depending on which plane. The difference with Palimps thought is the proportions and her firebox is seated closer to the floor grounding it. Emma's is a much larger wall expanse with smaller firebox & more free floating - the challenges are, making it a focal point without making it morph into the wall/design that is why I think framing it works - also, I don't know that a mantle is suited here due to the ,what appears to be high traffic area & something protruding from that height may be awkward Of all i like th 15:25 post frame in frame idea - 2nd pic I think a chunky frame right on the opening is in order to beef up the actual firebox - try that sans the tile above mantle - I would try that rendering with the "internal" frame a darker variant helping to ground HTH...See MoreSee-through fireplace mantle/tile layout and design
Comments (33)Jlc--thanks! I'm slowly warming to the idea of maybe tile just around the firebox. And I agree that a darker tile/stone would be best. Slate would look nice and not compete with the Carrara counters. I'd have to see some sort of photoshop or mockup to be able to tell. Mtn--I'm not sure I'd like the balance of dark charcoal top with white bottom. I think it emphasizes my low ceilings. Robo--different on both sides is a viable option I hadn't considered. I also appreciate you sneaking a photo of that fireplace while at dinner! You're very kind. That looks elegant, and helps me consider the options. Hi Colorfast! Nice to see you too. I agree with you about the feeling of the fireplace. I had not planned hearths when we reno'd. The fireplace area you see used to be a gigantic brick mass of two offset fireplaces as part of the wall that separated the two sides of the house, complete with massive ugly hearth on one side. I was rebelling against that set up when I re-designed the house and moved rooms around. I wanted a sleeker look. At this point, there's not enough floor space on the living room side for hearth. On the family room side where you see little DD's art table, there's enough space. I'm hoping that when we are finally able to buy new furniture for the family and living rooms that we can add some sort of little seating by the FR fireplace. Athomeinva--thanks. The fabric is not my style at all. It's hard to see, but there's a metallic thread running through the fabric. And it's showing its 25+ years of wear. Although the settee itself is much too ornate for my taste, I'm never going to part with it, and I don't currently have space to put it anywhere else in my house. It's a very special piece to me. I hadn't thought about having to possibly paint the side shelves. Not sure. The sprayed on finish is so lovely right now. Comments (3)Here's a couple pics of them. It is possibly too much water? Not enough light? They were looking great until recently. I wish I could plant them outside....but not for about 3 more weeks....See Morekayjones
