Computer Question

My computer crashed today, my son-in-law got it going again, but now I have noticed that I have lost all my documents files. It seems that when I do a search they are in the background by I don't know how to get everything back into my document file.

Any help, thanks.

I'm sorry to hear your computer got crashed.

It seemed that what you saw in the search were files in the "Recent" folder. The "Recent" folder shows only the name of the documents you last opened. Besides the name, it also shows the location of the file. This Recent folder is a reference folder only, sort of like a thumbnail section of the documents.

However, it is possible to retrieve those lost files back. They are not visible but may still be there. That is if you haven't download nor adding new files since. Otherwise, the new files or new download files can overlap the old deleted files.

There are softwares out there that fix this problem. Perhaps, the other forum can help you with it.

I hope you're able to get your PC cleaned up. If this is an instance of the installation of unwanted items and that's happened before, that might suggest that your security software isn't doing its job. And/or that your internet use habits need to be reviewed a bit. Once you get things back to normal, if you're not using one already, you might consider using a well rated security system. When you use a comprehensive program, utilities like Win Patrol become unnecessary. Attached as information for other readers is a link with trusted ratings of available programs. The not-free versions tend to be more comprehensive. The better rated free ones are capable but many have fewer features. Getting a multi-user license you share within your family or friends can reduce the cost. Also, many internet providers provide top rated products for free to subscribers. Maybe try hitting F11? Or maybe there's something in this video... I think if it were me and I needed to stick with Windows, instead of resetting to a no longer supported OS, I'd try upgrading to Windows 10 for free. Will it activate? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not. How to get Windows 10 for free Personally though, being a Linux user, I'd download Linux, write the ISO to USB Flash, boot it up and install Linux. I use this one but there are many good ones. Linux wouldn't be much good for a gamer but for almost everyone else it would probably be fine. Especially coming on a free computer. :-)

I quoted your words, there was nothing to assume. In response to your words, I said I thought it wasn't a good idea to keep a backup drive connected to a PC for the reasons I mentioned. Immediate, right at the moment backups are rarely necessary. Most programs do that as a normal feature on the installed drive anyway, to protect against user error. If the external drive is not left connected to your PC, how does it do backups "Every time a document is saved or changed". Again, those are your words. I've learned to quote what you say that I'm commenting on because you've used the "that isn't what I said" response before. If I've copied your words into quote marks inaccurately, you can explain further so that I and other readers can better understand. Or don't, it doesn't really matter.

there is a very very bad infection that does something very similar. Please head to the computer help forum and give us some more info on just what is happening, do not try to do anything because if it is that infection it can be made worse but doing certain things.
Let us know exactly what happened and what you are seeing also provide which version of windows it is.

My son-in-law came back to look at my computer again, not a serious problem. Apparently when the computer crashed it hid the "toggles", he just had to "unhide" them. All my document files appeared after he did this.

that really is very good news because that particular infection is one of the worst we have dealt with. Just had one of our regulars over at computer help go through the clean up for it. What an ordeal but she was successful.
