LOL. We had a RV rally this weekend, a little over an hour from home. DH had to work the weekend, and told me to go down on my own and he would commute. Early arrival was last Sunday, but I couldn't leave until Thursday morning. I very seldom drive it. I can, and do, but don't like to. And even less start out in it. So I loaded up and went. The only thing was I forgot to unplug the electric cord before backing up to leave. I caught it before I turned it around, and the only thing I did was cut and stretch the insulation on the electric cord, easily fixed. And I had help getting the electric and water hooked up when I got there. Escapees are wonderful people! Always ready with a helping hand. It was a great weekend, and only had a little rain. Not too hot, not too cool. Lots of good friends and food! And I attempted to teach a couple of the girls how to make a beaded bracelet. I don't think I was a very good teacher, but we had fun anyway!

Sounds like you have a big project ahead of you! So I will help you out with a few of the questions. Let's start with the soil cost: Mel's mix is expensive, and it is not the only option out there, but it is a very good one in my opinion. Honestly, soil costs are going to be your largest investment no matter what. You can probably get the wood donated from a construction site. You will find that many people on this site are against using any soil in container gardening. The idea is that soil compacts too much and creates a muddy drainage issue when used in a container. Mel's mix is essentially a soiless mix as there is no "dirt" in the recipe. Now with that being said, I do have a box that I used 90% garden soil in. The same kind of soil that is 4-5 bucks at home depot. I just added some peat moss to go along with it. You should probably do a quick search of soil mixes on this forum and will find out what does work and what doesn't. I have heard a lot of warnings against using solely top soil due the reasons I listed earlier. I am sure you could amend it with compost and vermiculite, but then you are back to the same cost issue! Now as far as plants go: Think spacing and think ease of growing. What I mean by this is that some of the plants you have mentioned need a lot of space/care. Easiest things to grow: Lettuce, Peppers, Tomatoes, Beans (bush), herbs, spinach. Things to consider: Corn: Heavy feeder (needs a lot of fertilizer) and needs a lot of plants to successfully open pollinate. Unless you plan on manually pollinating the silks (easy to do, but may be tough considering your situation) you should probably avoid unless you plan on using an entire 4X4 box for solely corn. I actually grow only 8 stocks at a time and self pollinate, so it is possible and may be educating for the children, but corn is also very big so pick a smaller variety. Squash/Cucumbers/Zuchinni: These grow very large and one plant can easily take over 16 sq feet. You can do these, but you may want to take them vertical. They are very large plants once they get going, but are also very fun to grow. Strawberries: Easy and fun! You should really do a couple squares of these for the girls, but understand that strawberry plants do not really start to produce big fruit until their second year and you need to clip the runners that grow from them, so they require some pruning. You also want to pinch buds for the first month or so in order to promote rooting. Egg plants, peppers and Tomatoes: Start from seedlings if possible. It will be a bit late in the season to start from seeds and these grow slowly. Eggplant is the more difficult of the three, but you will be fine. There are two types of tomatoes, Indeterminate and determinate. The determinate are probably easiest to grow as you really do not need to prune them and you can just cage them. Beans: Bush beans do not need a trellis to grow, so if you do not plan on having trellises then only get the bush kind. Pole beans need a pole or trellis to grow. You can plant bush beans along any of your heavy feeders as they actually pull nitrogen from the air and put it in the earth for your feeders to eat. you can also try a "three sisters" box (corn, squash, and pole beans). This was the way the Iroquois Indians planted theirs. Search this forum for directions on how to do this. Like I mentioned earlier you may have to manually pollinate the corn, but this can be done by shaking the stalks if you have enough in the container.

You completely repeated what I said in my earlier post in your hypothetical about a 50s Chevy. As I said, "Â. you may have a better chance of surviving with your full frame truck because itÂs heavier, which is beneficial if you are hitting an object lighter than your truck." However, if you hit an object that is stationary, youÂre much better off in the non-framed car. My point still stands. "And yes, I know, and he knows, that Korea isn't next door to Japan. However, for a great number of that generation, the nationalities/countries are lumped togehther as Oriental. And if "Oriental" is offensive, is "European"? The PC crowd strikes again..." Again, the term is "Asian" not "Oriental". Yes, it is offensive and overly simplistic to lump people who look the same into the same group. That's like saying that since the Japanese attacked us that all Asians attacked the US during Pearl Harbor. dekeoboe - thanks for the heads up about the owl! I went to Hallmark today and got the last one. Knock on wood - the 'L' word is really on my side so far w/ this room! The owl was 50% off! And the paint guy at ACE clearly didn't hear me when I said I wanted it mixed in the Essence paint as it is only $14.99 per gallon. I got 2 gallons for both DD's room and mine. I almost fell over when the cashier said $48! He mixed the wrong brand and it turned out that they were out of Essence so he gave me their top of the line paint for $14.99/ gallon! Sue - those alphabet fairies are just perfect! Polly - that chandy is so sweet! I wanted to name DD Penelope but DH nixed that. I really like the bunny lamp and I may have to start trolling around e-bay for something similar. Hellokitty - I was thinking of one or two small pillows - I really like the heart ones that Polly got at IKEA. I have a sweet little white one that I picked up a few months ago that has the palest of pale pink edging and is embroidered w/ 'P.S. I love you' in the same shade of pink. It's so pale you almost don't even notice it. I thought maybe a great raspberry plaid for the rocker seat. I started painting the dresser about 30 minutes ago in SW Berry Bush. I think that the deeper raspberry tones w/ that wall color are edgey but still sweet. Igloo - Maybe we can vacation swap houses like they did in The Holiday! LOL! Yes - I agree - that girls room that is decked out in all those fabulous shades of turqouise, green and white is simply wonderful! That Poster did such an amazing job at pulling that room together so well.

Good for you! I have not been brave enough to try that yet. I should try it just in case but I donÃ¢ÂÂt drive much at all these days. I am sure I could if forced to.

You are my hero.... Since out RV has sat in our yard all summer because DH has been under the weather, I have decided that I want 'lessons' just as soon as my other cataract is replaced. I haven't driven anything much for awhile and I am bored silly sitting home and being chauffered everywhere. "WATCH OUT WORLD..... Nanny's got a bee in her bonnet.

Raven, please do so BEFORE you HAVE to! Even if you only do it once. You don't necessarily have to learn to do the hook up, as there is usually someone who can get you hitched. Find someplace with plenty of room where you can be comfortable maneuvering. Even if it's from one rest area to another on the highway. Just remember that you need to make wider turns and more clearance in the back.

Nanny98, keep that bee busy! I hope you get your cataract done soon. If you can drive a full size truck or van, you can drive a RV. That's what I was told, and it's true. Do what I just told Raven, to start with. Have someone who is patient explain every thing to you.

I know at the Escapee club national rally, the Escapade, they usually have RV boot camp. I think it's right before the rally starts. In RV Boot Camp, they teach you everything you need to know to drive/pull your rv, what ever kind you have. Your vehicle, your unit, with you in the driver seat.

There might even be other places/groups who offer this. You might want to look into it. This is the one I know of.

I've driven it before, even started out from home in it once, I just don't do it often enough to be comfortable doing it. I've only emptied the holding tanks once. I have put fresh water in our trailer when we had it, but not in the motor home.

I am slowly learning how to hitch up the truck, as we tow a Ford Ranger pickup behind it. And learning to get the break assist hooked up correctly. Eventually I will learn to do all of it.

I told DH last year that if anything happened to him, I would probably sell the house and go full time in the RV, even if it was just parked most of the time in a campground. I would never be able to keep up the house and yard on my own. Maybe for a few years, but not for ever.

We are getting ready to leave on our next big trip...We are headed to the NE and stopping to visit friends and relatives all along the way....I do drive when I have to but it is just to relocate the RV from one spot to another but I know that I could if necessary...

Congrats though because that's a big accomplishment...

Good for you Tami, and know you had a great time.

We had a caravan moving from CA to MO. DH had moved back the year before so the farm wouldn't sit empty and DS wanted to graduate from his high school with all his friends so we stayed in CA until the following year.

I drove our RV pulling DIL's car, which was packed full of things and he drove my pickup, loaded and pulling a trailer and his wife (yes, married and a father at 17!!) drove DS's car. We made it with a few problems but at 17 DS was a good mechanic, but I wouldn't want to go through that again.

I would like a small class C RV though, but probably won't ever have one.

Ruthie, if you are going to the north east, are you coming near me? North central Ohio between Cleveland and Sandusky. The OH turnpike, I80, goes right by me.

Donna, what a trip! I can picture it. If you want a class C and can do so, do it, before it turns into a regret. We have been told for years to go while we can, as the older we get, the less likely we are able to go.
