I seed tomatoes before using them in anything. Didn't used to, but now have diverticulosis, so leaving the seeds isn't an option.

If you're going to be sharing the sauce with anyone who might have that condition (pretty much anyone over the age of 50), it would be a good idea to remove the seeds, so as not to cause them pain and possibly a trip to the ER. If seeds aren't a health issue for your family, then you can certainly leave them in if you prefer.

I run them through my Kitchenaid machine with the strainer attachment. It takes some time, but I like the sauce better that way.

Yes...I think the seeds just spoil the sauce or what ever and I think it is worth the time. I have a colander thing that I can use but I usually just do it by hand.

I use a food mill. It goes pretty quickly.

They grew pretty well, and now some tomatoes are getting red.

I have never made tomato sauce but do make salsa and tomato juice and no I do not seed them. Juice goes through the food mill and salsa gets chopped in the food processor.

I throw everything in the blender, tomatoes (seeds and skin), peppers, onions, celery etc. and let her go...I then cook it and bottle it and use it for chili, sauce, stuffed peppers, you name it.....Every once in awhile, I might strain it but not always.....

Huh. I never seed them - and hub has diverticulosis and son has Crohn's Disease. Not for tomato salad, not for fresh salsa, not for spaghetti sauce. The seeds seem to disappear in the cooked spag sauce, and are not a problem in the fresh sauces. Don't you ever eat raw, warm, fresh tomatoes, just off the vine?

I peel my tomatoes, but don't bother seeding them. I was told the gel around the seeds contains a lot of flavor, so what's the point?

I think the theory of avoiding seeds with diverticulosis is not true anymore. Studies have been done showing the seeds really don't get caught in the pockets, and inflammation or attacks are not caused by seeds.

The info on diverticulitis varies according to who you read. I have it, too, and have researched it. Mayo Clinic--I think it was, said it isn't seeds, it's an infection. I'd love to believe that, b/c I'm careful of seeds, too, and if you've ever had an attack of diverticulitis, you're willing to do anything to avoid it.

I do the same thing as sunnyDJ does..open a can from store of tomatoes. Ooopps I see seeds!! And the tomatoes are just as red as can be! Oh I suspect the pioneers threw everything in the pot and cooked away. I consider myself a modern pioneer. LOL

I agree. On this I disagree with the Mayo Clinic. Every time I have had an attack I could trace it to some kind of food with seeds or fiber.It may be an infection but seeds can get trapped and start the ball rolling.

That said I have never had to worry about tomato seeds. I eat salsa and such all the time with no problems. Its sesame, berry and poppy seeds that do me in. I love all 3 but just can't tolerate them well.

Bottom line is you have to listen to your body. I have become increasingly skeptical about what the medical research recommends. I guess that comes with "older" age and watching recommendations change over the years. First you are supposed to take hormones for menopause, then your'e not. You are supposed to eat a low-fat diet, then you're not. Aspirin is bad, then it's good. You are supposed to exercise at least 60 minutes, then 10 minutes is ok. Coffee's bad, then it's good. It can get quite confusing.
