Everyone was raving about Ivamae's blueberry muffins I just had to try them. They are Delicious! Easy too. I made regular size and got a dozen. I think the topping makes the muffin.

I tried the same thing this week-end but I had a can of pineapple slices. I drained the juice off and put the slices on paper towels to remove more of the juice. I cut them in small pices about half the size of pineapple chunks and used the whole can, which was just a good large cup full. My son and his friend said that they were very good too. It looks like you could use anything that you wanted to. I got 10 large ones this time. I really like the crumb topping as well.

Shamefully, we have not been taking very good care of it. We have in the past fertilized sporadically with commercial fertilizers. Once to maybe 3 times a year. We just put down the Scott's fertilizer with Halts. When the forsythia are in bloom, right? I will have to measure the mower height and I *think* I have DH convinced to mulch this year (unless we let it get too high). We also haven't watered it in the dead of summer ever, really. I guess it would be easy enough to measure rainfall (and water deeply once a week! See, I have been reading!) I guess I probably know enough to think if we just fertilize, water when needed, mow at the right height, try to keep the weeds away (which stronger turf will help with), and seed in the fall we could be in pretty good - or at least much better - shape. But I'll take validation on that or any further advice...websites, plans, ideas for how to transition to more environmentally friendly fertilizers. I guess I don't know where to go for that stuff - I imagine I would have to drive out to the farm supply stores far, far away for some of the things I have read about on here (which are escaping me at the moment, of course). Although I guess to do that 1-2 times a year wouldn't be terrible depending on the volume we would have to store and the storage properties. I'm open to ideas!

If the beneficial insects that feed on thrips and aphids are attracted to certain plants, it makes sense (to me, anyway) to plant those beneficial- insect attractors as some of the companion plants to roses. I tried doing this in Alabama, and it either worked pretty well or I didn't have much of a thrips problem anyway. I don't ever use pesticides in the garden either, as I am aware that there is an entire universe going on at the insect level that I don't see or much understand. I also do believe what Hamp and buford say, that there are some roses that are thrip magnets. It would be fun to make a list of those sometime. Greetings from Canada too! I just got back from 3 church rummage sales and got a huge garbage bag with tons of yards are beauiful material for 1.50!!!! also the next one i went to got yards and yards of 2 different upholstry material (actually 2 garbage too) for 5.00! the last one was pleather - 2 nice colours for totes - 25 cents! patterns don't get me going! - at our Sal. army they are 10 cents all the time have picked up tons of craft ones not even used! i quilt so i only buy material at our Sal. Army usually 69 cents to 2.99 at the most (best buy about 2 weeks ago 6 metres of new black real velevet for 1.99!)thank goodness all these people don't know how to price craft items!! enjoy being a lurker, but had to write in, Happy Sewing! debbie

Unless you specifically buy low iron glass, all glass will have a green tint to it. Low iron decorative glass is VERY expensive. Just plain low iron clear is about 2x the cost of "regular" glass. BTW, you really should be looking for low iron tempered glass for your cabinets, not regular untempered glass. You will be shocked at how costly it is though.

Hi Iva Mae,

They had a pack of blueberries for, I think that it was 75 cents just before the weekend, I'm pretty sure that it was at No Frills.

Joann, I just went to your/our new site and read this definition of a recipe:

Recipe: a series of step-by-step instructions for preparing ingredients you forgot to buy,
in utensils you don't own, to make a dish the dog won't eat.

I absolutely LOVE this and will use it again and again. I just want to thank you again for doing this - it is wonderful!

Can you use frozen blue berries if fresh aren't available? And if you use fresh do you cut them up?

I plan on using the blueberries I froze MaryAnn. Don't cut them up!

I used frozen. I filled the bottom of each muffin cup with batter then put about 10 frozen berries in each cup. It keeps the juice from running into the batter. Cooking time is still 22 minutes.

Fresh...I never cut them up...

I forgot I had frozen blueberries when we bought that 1/2 flat when they were in season. I had BB's on my grocery list so I guess I can scratch them off! I'll make them for sure this weekend.

Ole joyful, I got some about that price ealier on at No Frills and laid them out on a cookie sheet and froze them. After they were frozen I put them in plastic bags - a cup in each one. I wondered if they would be all right, so Itried them one day and mixed them right in with the batter and they were fine.

Nicole, your way of doing it would ensure that each muffin had about the same amount of berries. That is the only problem that I encountered mixing them into the batter. Some had more than others.

Let me know when you are going to be at church, Ed, and I'll try to bring you a couple. I have quite a few frozen, right now.
