WooHoo! Got my Romas!

How's that for timing! Just yesterday or the day before I questioned the availability of the Roma tomatoes, and today; there they were!

All 50 lb in there lovely plump red glory.

I've got roasted tomato soup on the go now. I need a nice tomato sauce recipe, so I'll be searching the net. Unless.....any of you lovely cooks have tomato sauce etc. recipes you want to share?

Yikes! I got about 15 pounds of Romas from my tomato plants today, and have tomato sauce with fresh basil simmering as I write.

Yea, I planted some of those last year. I guess they got cross pollinated with some weeds though because thats all that came up.

LOL Thank you, AP! I went and got more today and they are saving me some from tonight until tomorrow! ;) Thanks to the rain, I'll have to turn more often until I get it dried out some. I should have some pretty good muscles in a couple of weeks! LOL

We lost our Big Lots last year.i sure hated it too as I found all kinds of goodies in that store.I bought a BIG pot today too.Its 24 inch pot at Freds on sale,was 7.99.so not too bad for a BIG pot.I use all sorts of things for pots,like a couple years ago I bought some big plastic tubs with rope handles on them and drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom and used them for pots.I have 3 I been using for the last 5 yrs to grow a tomatoe plant in.Have used the half gal ice cream containers to plant seeds in,just drill holes in the bottom. When I still had my dehydrator, I dried tomato slices. They were just the tastiest snack. When they are dried all of that yummy tomato flavor is intense.

Funny, when I saw the title of your post....I thought..shoes. I don't know why.

Sorry Dotmom; I'm sooo not a shoe person! LOL

I used up almost all of my basil from my plant on my balcony in my
roasted tomato soup tonite.

I had an awesome chili sauce recipe that I made all the time many years ago but lost it.
Does anyone make chili sauce? Specifically Canadian members, I would think. Ours is different (I believe) than what the people in the States are used to.

Anyone make it with celery, peppers, an apple or a peach, pickling spice, etc?

I made sauce yeaterday from the almost 20 pounds of Romas e've gotten from our garden, so I can imagine how excited you are ;o) Today I'll finish the sauce and start canning. I also roasted two 1/2 sheet pans of Romas in the oven and put some on our pizza last night. It's raining today but I still have to get outside and pick some more.
You have a lot of work ahead of you and I can share your "pain". But what a wonderful and satisfying pain it is.

Good afternoon!
Finally got a chance to sit down!!!!

Roasted my largest cookie sheet full of Romas of yesterday and made Roasted tomato soup. I gave some to my step-father a couple years ago, and he raved about it, so that's been his birthday gift for a couple years now. So yesterday's soup has my step-father's name on the containers! I gave them a call and they came over for a wee visit and I sent the soup home with them. He's ecstatic.

So first thing this morning, another baking sheet went in the oven for soup for US. Also made spaghetti sauce, with meat, and another huge pot of meatless.

Decided not to make chili sauce. I really only use it for my meat loaf, and living in Mennonite country, I can always buy a jar when the 4 I have left my last batch are finished.

Sent some romas home with mom, and I still have about 10 lb or so left.

What else can you think of I can do with them? Love bruschetta and will make more, but that just gets rid of 3 or 4. Wish there was a way of keeping it longer. Love that stuff.
