Anyone go to the Movies today?

to see Julie and Julia?

Just got home. Loved it. It was cute and funny. Meryl Streep was amazing in the part--I kept forgetting it wasn't really Julia on the screen.

anyone else catch it yet?

I've been seeing Streep and Adams doing many interviews lately along with viewing several previews.

So glad you liked the movie Azzalea; I know I would love it also! Streep said with all the eating, she did gain some pounds. She said she even had to learn how to chop food the way Julia did; however, Meryl learned to chop the 'correct' way (the way most chefs do). I thought that was interesting as I hadn't noticed Julia's different way of doing it, did you?

I can't wait to see it. I will be taking care of a friend after day surgery next week, maybe I can sneak her out of the house for this movie.

No new movies to report on, however, since this seems to be evolving into a trip tick I'll jump in. Edna...You will be so close to the D-Day beaches when you make your trip over to Paris that if you have never toured that area you really should do so. Versailles is also a must see. DH, DS and I were there in 2006. If you want info send me an e-mail. Cameron...Everytime DH and I see a movie or a travel show about Germany we want to hop on a plane so I fully understand your "instant" adventure. Sounds like a wonderful trip. DH and I are planning a trip in May. I'm doing research now on taking VIA Rail Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. We want to see Niagra Falls and then take the train to the west coast of Canada. I have always wanted to go to British Columbia and see Butchart Gardens, Victoria, etc. We are thinking once in BC we will rent a car to tour around and drive south through Oregon and Wash on to CA to see the Napa Valley. Everyone I mentioned the train trip to says they hear it is fabulous. If any of you have ever done the train trip across Canada I'd love to hear from you. Vikki

it's such a good fair that i know carefully avoid it... i've never walked away not spending hundreds of dollars. the specialty growers are amazing there -- begonias, camellias, ferns, noids, gingers... i will not drive to mt dora... i will not drive to mt dora... hmmm.

Yeah, good question. I think you can judge it by how they behave in other situations. Can they sit through a whole movie at home without getting restless; How long can they sit in church; what does their teacher say about their school-day behavior; can they sit quietly through a meal at a restaurant? Etc. Of course, you could think it's the right time and be wrong cuz kids are kids! I agree that a short kids' movie during the day is the best time/place to begin. And be ready to make a quick escape if it gets out of hand. I've heard of the special matinees for parents with young kids. I don't know if they do it anymore, I wonder how necessary it really is with dvds & the like. Honestly, I haven't gone to a theatre to see a movie in years. The last few times I went, I really felt the experience was not worth it. People talking through the movie, cell phones ringing, etc. And these are adults. I used to sign up through our local newspaper for free movie nights. They'd pick names at random and send free tickets to a new movie preview night. We used to go about once every couple of months. Free! But I got tired of all the commercials before the movie and disturbances I mentioned above. The last movie we went to see, the sound wasn't working properly and it was too low. After all the previews and about 20 minutes into the movie, they finally decided to fix it. Well, after about a 15 minute wait, instead of just picking up where they left off, they started the whole sequence over again, including previews! I swore that was the last time I'd go to the movies. I have a large screen and surround sound at home, cheap popcorn, clean bathrooms, and if anyone talks through the film, I can rewind!

"Come down, Bill! We have sugar!"... actually think it was Kevin McCarthy... from original Invasion of the Body Snatchers. On back: went to see doctor this morning. After saying I REALLY needed to see a doctor, was asked if I hurt back at work. When I said... maybe, not sure, I don't know?!?... almost a chorus from other side of counter that I'd have to go to a workman's comp doctor. I'm NOT much of a doctor person to begin with but number one concern was STOP THE PAIN... then figure out what the problem is. Had a talk with some sort of non-doctor (PR person) , Explained original injury is 20 some years old, re-injured about 2 years ago, and possibly job connected, I don't know. Explained I wasn't leaving without getting some help and she agreed we had NOT had the conversation, iykwim. Getting an xray and bone density scan on Friday. Doctor said wouldn't be surprised if it was a compression and/or related arthritis... AGE related!! At least doctor wasn't a "kid". Got prescription for Tramadol?? Doctor said not a major, heavy-duty pain med. Coulda fooled me from the literature that came with it! Said dosage was kind of an as needed thing... from 1/2 pill to no more than 2 every 8 hours. Has been about hour and half since taking first dose, so just waiting to see how it goes.

I remember my mom watching Julia Child all the time. I thought she was a hoot. But she sure did make some strange things. I remember when she cooked a duck or goose or some huge bird....kinda freaked me out! She certainly was a character. I'd love to see the movie. Thanks for the review. Bon appetit!

I saw it this afternoon. I really enjoyed it. Meryl Streep looked just like Julia Child.

I want to see this too, didn't "see" Meryl Streep doing Julia Child, though, until I saw the pictures. Wow. I used to watch Julia Child occationally growing up.

Azzalea- Nora Ephron said she hopes everyone leaves the theater starving. Did it effect you that way? And how is your ankle doing?

I just got home from seeing it and just loved it. Everyone was laughing and really enjoying the movie. i want to go see it again. Meryl Streep did a wonderful job her character is so believable you really think it is Julia Child.

No i didn't think about eating after the movie.

I read (in Country Living, possibly) that some effort was made to recreate Julia Child's exact kitchen. Her husband picked out the original paint, and it took the movie people several tries to get it right. Also, Julia's counters were higher than normal because she was so tall. I doubt they raised them for Meryl, however.

I saw it today on an impulse. I went to Sears to pick up saw blades and the lady in front of me was in a hurry because she was going to see Julia and Julie and was afraid she'd be late. I looked at my watch and thought 'Hey, why not?'

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Think I'll make Boeuf Bourguignonne A La Julia this weekend.

Here's an interesting note. Those of you who have seen the movie know that there was a little disagreement among the original 3 authors of Mastering the Art of French Cooking as to how much each contributed. I have the 2 volume set which was published in 1983 and it's interesting to note that while all 3 are listed as authors for Volume one there are only 2 authors for Volume two- Julia and Simca.

I know - it's a minor point.
