Another obnoxious commercial

They're been pushing St. Jude's Childrens Hospital around here a lot lately and they're running one where the "mother" is talking about her child saying "Mommy, I'm scared" and her response? "That's OK, I'm scared too." Boy THAT would do a lot to give confidence and comfort to a scared kid! If it's true, it's a stupid thing to say. If it's an act for the fundraising, they're not using much common sense.

Commercials. Sheesh.

At least she didn't belittle the child's concern by saying " Don't be scared.". Better response would have been to ask the child what is making her scared to open up the dialogue.

St. Jude is one of the charities I support. At least the mom was honest. I've not seen this ad. As a matter of fact the only ads I've seen for St. Jude have been done by Marlo Thomas.

I do not think that there are any dangers whatsoever with it. I too, was reluctant, in fact, I even kept I.E. as my default browser until I was confident that I could handle Firefox. It was a snap, picked up all my favorites and everything. Like most everything else, it just takes a little getting used to and a little time. Keep it updated, also down load the extensions mentioned above (and any of the other many excellent ones that they have that sound like they might be of interest to you) and I think that one day soon you will wonder why you did not do it sooner. You will be surprised when you see what all it has blocked off from appearing on your computer. ":^) Yes, Mozilla dot com is the one that has Firefox, they also have an email program that I have not tried yet, which people say is good. You can pay, or make a donation if that would make you feel better about it. Some other programs that could help keep your computer performing well are spy sweeper and AVG anti Virus is one of the better ones too. Both have excellent free downloads, or better ones if you pay a nominal fee. Bill P.

Have you seen him in any movies Bestlawn? He was in the recent 'Live Free, Die Hard' with Bruce Willis (DH was wondering why I got so interested in that movie all of a sudden). Really cute in 'Herbie:Fully Loaded' and an older flick "Accepted". A bunch more too that I haven't seen like "American Pie" (not the first) and "Alvin and the Chipmunks". he can wrap those bow legs around me LOL I hear you!

One of my all time favorites was from about 5 years ago. It showed a man sitting in the back seat of a moving car. The radio was playing 'Another one bites the dust' and he was rocking & rolling to the music, swaying back and forth, smiling, just rocking out! People on the sidewalk were looking at him and laughing at him uncontrollably. Then a long shot - the car he's in is a hearse in a funeral procession! Still don't know what product they were selling.

My Dh laughs his butt off at the commercials where the hospital gurney is following the guy around.....??? Or when they list off the BAD consequences of taking the drug being advertised....he cracks up!

I've seen that--I don't really understand what you think is obnoxious about it? how is it obnoxious for a parent to be honest with their child? Mom is not only being honest, but she's validating the child's feelings, and letting her know she understands. What could possibly be more supportive than that?

I am so grateful my two daughters grew up normal and healthy. Yeah, they bad-mouth me and ask for money all the time. But they made it through childhood without any serious ills. I am blessed. I would have a terrible time if one got sick, even now. I think St. Jude is a good thing, but their TV ads are like any other, made to shock viewers and make them want to send money. My belief is that Marlo Thomas (Danny's daughter) is fully aware of the advertising used.

I haven't seen the commercial, but I don't see anything wrong with a Mother being honest with her child...especially in this situation.

I agree with everyone else who said there is nothing wrong with being honest. Everyone gets scared and children should know that. It's what you do with fear that's important.

I see nothing wrong with the commercial. Kids need to know that parents also get scared.

Wildchild is spot on. It's how you deal with the fear that is important.

I'm all in favor of being honest but only telling the kid you're scared is certainly going to scare the kid all that much more. What comfort is there by saying only that? Surely there's more and better things to say or at least be totally honest and deal with it. Of course I'd be honest with them, tell them that that's why we're here - to help you get better, to treat the disease/pain or whatever and accentuate the positives of it, comfort the child, reassure them that you're there with them and the hospital is there to help them.

A parent needs to help a distressed child deal with the situation. A kid in a hospital is often freaked out or a wide variety of reasons, some big, some small, some valid, some not. Something far more calming can be said than "I'm scared too!". Essentially that line tells the kid, "You're toast, ready to die?" Far more important than not being a strong person for them in their time of need, why wouldn't you ask *what* is scaring them and go from there? Afraid of the dark? Scared of needles? Scared of dying? Or scared that she might not be as popular anymore? "I'm scared too" is a copout and a stupid thing to say IMO. That's what's so obnoxious to me.

I haven't seen that commercial, and I guess there are different ways to handle the situation. I agree with Jannie, I'm just thankful that my 3 kids, as obnoxious as they sometimes were, were healthy and grew up to be productive adults. As for St Judes, they do very good works and commercials are meant to get a persons attention.
