Watching movies -

Here is the set-up: you are in an isolated situation. No contact with the rest of the world, no phone, no electronic connections - nothing. You will be by yourself for 28 days. No books, no paper, no nothing. However, you will have a decent stash of food and beverage.

However - you have the ability to watch movies. Big screen, good sound. No popcorn, no nibbles. You have a comfortable chair, or sofa, or whatever.

You watch movies and nothing else. OK? Got it? Here's the catch: you can have only five (5) movies. Pick something that you would be willing to watch over and over and over. (This might take a while for you to select yours, but that's OK.)

What will you have to watch? Here are my choices, with a few comments:

Victor, Victoria. Not really a musical, but lots of music. Julie Andrews is wonderful and Preston is a stitch! What fun. (Close second was Mary Poppins.)

Blazing Saddles. Ya gotta have a comedy and this one is my pick. I have seen it so many times, I already know most of the dialog, yet it still makes me laugh (much to the chagrin of the missus).

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? A DARK drama, but the acting is superb. Was a play and adapted very well to the big screen.

Run Silent, Run Deep. Burt Lancaster and Clark Gable. My WWII film. From 1958, it has Don Rickles in a straight roll! Great tension.

Stagecoach. 1939's John Ford classic with The Duke. Also Claire Trevor and Andy Devine. They were all so young then.

I could watch and re-watch each/all of them. Of course it might get to be somewhat boring, but I picked those that would get me through 28 days.

I really was hoping someone could help choosing a brand of packaged Ramen noodles. There are so many brands take Mr. Noodles they are starchy and too thick if cooked longer they get mushy. Nong shim have a better flavor but still they don't get that smooth slippery feel without getting mushy. Both of these brands tend to be more yellow that the ones I have in my memory. Noodle connoisseurs. There are so many different brands to try I would like to narrow it down to about 10.

I agree, it's none of his/our business about her getting married... however, she is the one that has pulled us aside and told us that she was marrying him last August and she is the one that called DH in November. She has discussed her plans, including the wedding theme (butterflies) with SD so that every time SD sees butterfly things, she starts talking about her mom's wedding. The more I think about it, maybe she is hoping we react to it but we haven't. DH could care less and yes, that is great for me. I've never had a doubt that he could care less what she does or that anything she does could make him remotely jealous. My concern has more to do with SD's other problems (everything she's gone through adjusting to her mom leaving) and her counselor is now leaving the state so she is losing her counselor too. I have some worry that SD will act out again when she realizes mom is lying about getting married. I agree that he probably hasn't asked her but then he also told his ex that they were getting married in Spring. I guess the biggest issue is how it affects the kids (on both sides) for them to be telling them and then it doesn't happen. I know that it is ultimately going to be on them to explain to the kids but usually, it comes back to BM blaming everyone else. SD was told it's DH's fault that her mom lost her job. BM finds a way to make it someone else's fault and we end up having to deal with the fallout or feel like we have to defend her accusations. Since SD's counselor is leaving, I was hoping she won't have to find a new one. She's with BM for summer anyway so she won't be here to see a counselor until school starts. If she doesn't have any meltdowns or acting out, we are probably not going to take her back to counseling. The weight thing, for her height, SD should weigh 85-90 lbs. She weighed 85 lbs when she was 5 and I considered her obese or very overweight. She's gotten taller and thinned out so she has been about average for her height.. she looks very healthy. But, with the added weight, it is all in her belly and her pants button pops off. She has broken two new pants (one zipper, one button) in the last few months. I think it's the amount of food she eats (we were having burritos and we give her one, she says she can eat three at her moms) and the type of foods (she says she eats donuts with Mountain Dew for breakfast and usually just fast food. Her mom doesn't cook) She eats a lot there and when she is here, she acts like she's always starving, even if we feed her more than a normal portion size. We'll give her more good snacks like fruit but she wants junk and sweets. I've given up with worrying about what her mom is doing. I told SD that if she overeats and gains a lot of weight, SHE is the one that has to deal with being teased at school (something she cries to us about) and that we have no control over what she eats at her moms so she has to take responsibility, even if her mom lets her eat anything. DH has mentioned it to BM a few times in the past, he always gets denials. SD is getting old enough to make choices about what and how much to eat and I told her that if she is going to eat everything she wants (because she brags to me that her mom lets her have this or have that and I don't) then I don't want to hear her crying later about kids teasing her.

Unfortunately your options for a "great" picture and sound is going to be somewhat limited in that size of television because consumers generally want bigger TV's and manufacturers put their efforts into those. Your best bet is to visit your local stores and see what's available. Generally speaking the better quality televisions come with "smart" features but, obviously, you don't need to use them. As for connecting the TV to your computer, all modern televisions are going to come with some number of HDMI ports and a COAX connection. After that there may or may not be other connections (component, composite, etc.). Does your laptop have an HDMI port? If not, you're going to have to find a TV that has the port you need. As for watching over-the-air television, all you need is an antenna. The number of stations you can receive is going to be a function of your proximity to the local broadcast towers and the kind of antenna you have.

My husband and I have a TV den upstairs next to our bedroom (designated a small bedroom), and it's great. I absolutely did not want a TV in the living room because it would be in the way, we don't do TV as a social activity, and it would be unsightly and anachronistic in our Victorian AF main floor. We also did not want a TV in the bedroom because we've just never been into that and it's terrible for sleep hygiene. My aunt and uncle had a bedroom TV for ages but ditched it when they moved to their new house. Having the TV den upstairs near our bedroom has been great - you can retire to upstairs and watch TV/play video games before bed but not IN bed. And we'll stick with one TV. There are enough old coax cables on our house to put a TV in every room (previous owner was obsessed with TV, I guess?) but I couldn't imagine. I don't even like TV that much.

Remember, the only thing to do is watch movies. You must be prepared to view the same movies every 2 - 3 days. For 28 days. That means you might watch Gone With the Wind about 12 times in 28 days.

For OldFixer - we could put you on an island in the Dead Sea!

Katlan, did you read Shining Through, the book? They completely changed the story for the movie. I probably would have liked the movie if I hadn't read the book, which is a favorite of mine. Susan Isaacs wrote it.

I've never read the book Shining Through.

o.k. Moonstruck is def a good one. Cher was awesome in that movie. And I ADORE The Quiet Man. Shoot, I knew I would change my mind, haha.

It is hard to imagine (for me to imagine) that I used to be a movie buff. Before my daughter was born, my husband and I saw just about every movie that came out. Back then, you didn't have the multiplex cinemas and you might have to drive 40 miles to see a movie somewhere. We lived that far from town, so had to drive that far to see about any of them. I quit going when my daughter was born because I was nursing and didn't want to leave her. I eventually got out of the habit of going. The last movie I was was Buffalo 66, (saw it in 1999!!) when my daughter was a freshman in college. Now I can't remember a movie much past the time that I watched it. I have been known to rent a movie and get it home, only to realize I have already seen it. Now I have a hard time staying awake to watch a movie.

Sorry to write so much and not give a list, The first three movies I own and have watched many times.

Grey Gardens (documentary)

The next one I just remember watching and enjoying:
