Watching movies on laptop

I have never watched a movie before on a laptop, so forgive my awkwardness. How does one do this, and are there certain 'safe' sites where you can go to watch a movie for free? No, not looking for anything pornographic, but would just like the option of seeing some old movies without having to rent them all the time. Any favorite sites or suggestions would be welcome.

If you have a DVD rom or a DVD burner on your laptop, just insert a DVD into and providing you have DVD playing program on laptop, it should open and DVD should start playing.

I use Hulu, it's free and has lots of stuff to watch there, both movies and TV shows.

He who holds the remote is just now discovering the options we have. LOL We have the same model Sony BluRay at home and and on Maui. We have never investigated the various options until we tried the Netflix option yesterday. (Bomb.) We haven't cared because our library at home usually has whatever we are looking for (free) as soon as it's available anywhere. That's not the case here on Maui, and we are staying longer on Maui now. Here we can rent "Shane", "I Was A Male War Bride", etc. We got "Black Swan" from our branch of the Maui library -- one of the few 'recent' movies. We are also able to use our cable HD-DVR and watch recorded PBS programs at teatime. Our BluRay boxes date from about 2012. This one talks about "2010" options, but I assume that since they still show up on the menu, they are all still currently available. The Sony channel is offering "Truth" -- current movie we just rented from Redbox for $1.50/day. Looked like it was $6 to stream. Please walk me through the Amazon Prime membership as regards streaming movies. I see Amazon has at least one TV series we have been waiting to see: Season Three of "The Americans". It looks like it is $6 per episode. (Our library at home has this now, but we're not there, we're here!) We usually split a movie over two days of teatime. If we chose "The Americans" Episode One of Season Three, and had an Amazon Prime membership, how long would we have access to that episode? Could we *stop* and *resume*? (With Redbox, we just pay for two days, as time stops at midnight of the day you rent.) What's the cost to have Prime? (I very seldom buy anything online, so never looked into this -- certainly not for Hawaii, where shipping is a week, not days.) Thanks for helping guide two Seniors into the 21st Century.

Unfortunately your options for a "great" picture and sound is going to be somewhat limited in that size of television because consumers generally want bigger TV's and manufacturers put their efforts into those. Your best bet is to visit your local stores and see what's available. Generally speaking the better quality televisions come with "smart" features but, obviously, you don't need to use them. As for connecting the TV to your computer, all modern televisions are going to come with some number of HDMI ports and a COAX connection. After that there may or may not be other connections (component, composite, etc.). Does your laptop have an HDMI port? If not, you're going to have to find a TV that has the port you need. As for watching over-the-air television, all you need is an antenna. The number of stations you can receive is going to be a function of your proximity to the local broadcast towers and the kind of antenna you have.

I have no idea without seeing the pieces you want to use and knowing how old the kids are a lot more info . I certainly would not advise a sectional and for sure not in linen fabric wth kids . IMO the drawing shows too much furniture in your LR and I would do a sofa and 2 chirs IMO all in leather with kids. I aslo do not think kids need to take over spaces and I guess if you never have guests then no DR is okay.

Another vote for The Wire as best TV show ever, and we have rewatched that, with our DD, when she was in 8th grade or so, but we don’t watch many series, although if we run out of options, I would rewatch The Americans and when I’m old and fully retired, I’d like to watch Better Call Saul and then Breaking Bad so I can compare and contrast what they got right in the prequel. We also rewatched a few seasons of Hill Street Blues and WKRP (I happened on the DVDs in a thrift shop) and they held up remarkably well, considering they are, ahh, of a certain vintage. Growing up reruns were on daily, and I’ve seen every epidose of MASH, Hogan’s Heros, Cheers, Beverly Hillbillies and the like a 100 times over, that’s what happens when the TV was always on, not something I’ve ever wanted to replicate, that’s why I’m a ”one and done” for the most part (The Wire being the notable exception).

I also use Hulu also you can go to most of the network sites like NBC, CBS , ABC FOX etc and often find they have archives of shows to view online.
OV guide is an online viewing guide that lists several locations to view movies and programs.

logo movieshare is pretty decent also.
for some sites you may need plugins, some I can not watch on my linux box some I can.

by the way on hulu when you start to watch a movie if you put your mouse over the to the sides you have options like view in High resolution, full screen mode, etc which is what I usually choose. I was just there today watching Australia:Land Beyond Time, awesome movie.
There will be some really quick short ads but they go fast.

Archive.org has a large collection of movies, music, books, etc that are not out of copyright or were never copyrighted. There are a lot of older full length movies in the feature films section. You can watch them online or download them and watch them offline.

Thanks, ravencajun. When I did my search (for watching TV online) I only glanced at the titles of threads in the results and figured 'watching movies on laptop" would not have what I was looking for. I should have known I'd be wrong.

Anyway, thanks for the response to my other thread. I won't bother repeating my thanks there. I'll just let it die a slow death. :-D
