Started my Christmas Shopping

Bought a gift for my dil from QVC (a food processor). It was on the 5 easy payment plan, so I ordered it for her now and it will be paid off by Christmas.

I think this is the 1st time I bought something this early.

Terri, it's brushed stainless and I just love it. It is very heavy and has a soft bottom so stays in place and you can 'one-hand' pull a towel and tear it off and the holder stays put. Worth every penny I paid and then some. I've looked at paper towel holders for a while but most look nice but they move or tip over when you pull a towel and I knew this would not work out for us. Here it is at Amazon.com for about the same price I paid. Actually cheaper as I had to pay sales tax. Free shipping on this too, if you have Amazon Prime, which I do. Yes, I'm working on the last assembly to a log cabin quilt. I've done pillowcases in this pattern, but wanted to have a full sized quilt. I had a few very large pieces of material I can't see using for anything else, and wanted to work them down in my fabric stash, so make it using those and they wouldn't have been my first choice. But you know how quilts are. Somebody would really like it even if it's not my cuppa tea. I have worked on it one to two hours a day since Sunday last, so essentially it will have taken me a week to do it because I wanted to try to do one entirely by chain stitching in an assembly line to see if it really does save time and still not be boring as heck. (I like the instant gratification of doing one block at a time). The answer is yes, it does save a lot of time and no...I wasn't bored silly. I have another quilt I sort of lost interest in because it was a humdinger hanging on the design wall. I have one more dresden plate to do, cut into quarters and use them as a cornerstone in each corner of the quilt and then I can assemble those blocks. This one is paper pieced and is one of those 'keepers' I'll spend time on, and prolly hand quilt. So........yes, I've been pleasantly busy messing around in the sewing room. We'll do thanksgiving on 'the day' at my my kid's farm. Over the river and through the woods etc. I'm cooking the bird, some pies and homemade noodles.

We are definitely into the countdown & I have started - my DH is in food sales and gives each of his customers gifts (about 40 of them!). I start right after Christmas & get gifts for the next year on clearance. Usually we give books, candles, and ornaments and I try and stay under $5 for each. I have started buying for family too - all the grands - kids & neices & nephews (all 20 of them) get books. I purchase from a catalog/website that has on sale & clearance - I try to find books under $5 (for the customers mentioned above also). If you want the name of the website please e-mail me. For our 4 kids we wait until we get a list from them. I have bought items off the list & then got their list and ended up spending too much! For brothers & sisters & immediate nieces & nephews - I make jam/jelly & they each get a jar of wonderful goodness - we grow the fruit & then I make jam & jelly for them. I am about 1/2 way done on that... I don't post all that often - but I enjoy lurking - what a wonderful group of people. Thanks.

I have owned iPads exclusively since they came out and loved each of them. My mom has a Kindle, which she enjoys and which I've played with quite a bit. I very much prefer the iPad. It is faster, has more apps and feels more substantial. Of course, it is pricer. Depending on what your husband wants to use the tablet for ("tablet" is the general term for all of these type of devices), will help decide which one you should buy. They almost all can do the basics - read books, surf the web, check e-mail, watch movies. The iPad has a much wider availability of apps - small programs on the machine that do various tasks, such as word processing, games, etc., and that's a big advantage to me. If you want to use the tablet in the car or mall (anyplace that does not have wi-fi) you WILL have to buy a separate data plan, either through your cell phone carrier or separately. I don't know about other carriers, but Verizon allows you to purchase a month by month data plan for around $20 per month. You can cancel at anytime without a penalty. Alternatively, if you have a cellphone with a data plan, you may have the ability to use the cellphone as a "hot spot" and wirelessly tether the tablet to the phone and use the phone's data plan on the tablet. This can eat up data quickly on your phone plan so you want to make sure you are aware of any data caps that exist on your cellphone data plan. This can work OK unless your phone carrier doesn't permit data and voice calls at the same time, in which case your data connection would drop every time a phone call came through. So, just a few things to consider. Try to post back with what you think your husband would primarily use the tablet to do and we can give you better feedback on what device might be best and most cost effective for you.

Me, too. I like my new Corinthian Bells wind chimes so much that I bought the same set for my DS and DIL, and a slightly larger set for my DD and SIL. Got them both from windchime.com at a discount, plus retailmenot.com had a $10 off coupon code.

Now I have to think about my DD's birthday in less than a month!

Thanks for giving me a push. I just ordered my first Christmas present. Definately my earliest. I hope this will get me going and I can get my shopping done easily and spread out the cost.

I too start shopping shortly after Christmas for the next Christmas. I start my Christmas gift crafting in July, so I already have some things made for our family....door draftstoppers, washcloth love birds, desk calendars, purse sized tissue holders, and Santa Suit advent boxes for our daughter.....25 numbered boxes so she has a gift a day through the month.

I started last January. I retired early and have a small pension. I just can't afford to take the hit and buy groceries and gifts if I wait until the xmas shopping season. Much easier to budget year round for the holidays.

I've started Christmas gifts, too. Some purchased; some 'in progress'. That progress needs to get busy...if only I didn't keep breaking dates with the sewing machine :-0

I always try to start sometime over the summer, since we've so many persons on our list. However, beginning this year, Christmas is going to be much downsized (i.e. FRUGAL). We've no other choice.
