School bus in MO

Just showed those pictures of that bus/truck collision in MO where at least 1 girl and the pick up truck driver was killed. So sad as they (HS band) were headed for a fun trip. Sure looks like to me that both busses and the PU were driving too fast, too close as the big rig was slowing down for construction. I have seen way too many school and city busses drive fast and close to others.

They were headed to Six Flags. There have been many fatal accidents in that area. I saw just 1 photo of the accident.. it does look like the drivers of the buses weren't paying attention and driving too close.

Sad that what should have been a fun-filled day ended up tragic.

CD3 this reminds of the time I had a pet Raccoon named Randy. One day I noticed a pink bubble (looked like someone had blown an bubble gum bubble) on his stomach. With all the hair on his belly, I couldn't tell what it was. And was afraid to look too closely, thinking maybe he had a hole in his belly and his intestines were sticking out. So I picked him up and took him to the vet. I walk in with him in my arms and the vet say's "wait a minute". So he goes to the med. closet gets out a bottle and a needle and comes back. Tells me to lay him on the table and he puts him to sleep before he will take charge. Well I leave him there and they call me later to tell me he is ready to be picked up. He is in a cage and they have wrapped the latch with a whole roll of adhesive tape to keep him from letting himself out. It seems that he had been trying to "mate" with his baby blankie and had irritated his male apparatus and caused the blister. Boy was my face red. Well, I contacted the Univ of Fl zoo and they had been wanting to find a male to go with their Female in the Raccoon Habitat, so everything worked out well. Glenda

Jannie, that's funny! I can see myself doing it. I was pretty proud of Grace that she thought to call home, to let us know. Just in case we were worried. (though I wonder if mostly she called to tell Dad what a doofus I was). We haven't done the cell-phone thing. It's against school policy to have a cell phone in schools in NYC--even if it's in your locker! Her teachers, though, have an unofficial "don't ask, don't tell" policy. As long as they never know, they don't care. And apparently, if someone's accidentally goes off, everyone in class starts fumbling w/ their pockets, backpacks, purses, etc., to "camouflage" the true culprit until he/she can turn it off. And apparently they all laugh, hoping the noise will disguise what directions the ring is coming from. But next year, I think we'll have to have one, bcs she'll probably travel to and from school on her own. I think I'd worry more about her if she were walking to school in my hometown, or a small city or a suburb. In NYC, there is ALWAYS someone around (usually thousands of someones), and I'm confident she'd get help if she needed it.

Kim, I read your request to the DH last night and he came up with various ideas that involved the special soft ware you can buy (probably at great expense) to enable you to make your own banner/scroll. He is also worried that you might have some draconian regulations from either the bus company or the school that if the paper/plastic fell onto a kid and hurt a hair of their head you would be sued for $$$$'s millions . . . as might well happen here in the UK. Have you thought of just buying a roll of paper and writing the various 'Hellos' on it in bright colours? Another possibility, if your bus has a tape/CD deck, would be for you to record all the different words, maybe with pauses for the kids to reply.

I saw that on the news a little while ago.....how tragic! The news gal stated that the school bus driver got distracted.

It is a very sad event, but shows that things can happen in a very short time. Drivers become complacent not realizing how much stopping distance they will need, and not paying attention to road hazards some diatance ahead. It was not stated how fast the trucker slowed - did he slow at a normal rate or slam on the brakes to quickly haul his rig down to 50 mph? Maybe he was punishing his "tailgater", a risky and illegal move. Not much detail is available, but from what little I can gather, it seems the school busses were surprised and "drove" into this accidnet scene.

I have little faith that the team of 'experts' who will examine the scene long after it happened will be able to determine exactly what happened. They may be able to detect when one of the participants are lying. The investigators sorely need the eyes of third party witnesses, and none have been mentioned. Surely, someone else also saw this accident on this well travleled road. Where are they?

Unfortunately, research has shown that witnesses can have problems in accurately describing what happened during such a traumatic event. This is where a trained observer is needed, one who can describe the scene without adding his prejudices to the story.

It was a very unfortunate event and I am glad that most of the people did not get seriously injured. The potential for mayhem was great. Luck and pluck were on their side.

From the witness statements I've heard, the pictures I've seen, and the first bus driver's own account, I put most of the responsibility for this wreck on the first bus driver.

She said a "car was on the shoulder" of the highway, but nobody else saw that phantom car. She was NOT driving "ahead" - meaning, she wasn't looking far ahead on the highway to see any potential problems that were developing.

The kid who was in the pickup was also at fault, as he did rear-end the bobtail tractor, but his impact was not enough to kill him. The female (first bus) driver killed that boy, and she is also responsible for the death of the girl on her bus. If driver had been paying attention, it could have been avoided.

I will put just a small amount of blame on the second bus driver. He/she was obviously following the first bus too closely and was also not "driving ahead."

Tragic, but 100% avoidable.

And before anyone starts harping on the lack of seatbelts on school buses - a seatbelt would not have saved that girl's life. She was in the back of the bus, which was crushed up to the 4th or 5th-from-last row.

The final report is in from the state police. Looks like my assessment was right-on:

FATALITY ACCIDENT. VEHICLES 1 AND 2 WERE STATIONARY IN THE ROADWAY DUE TO A PRIOR ACCIDENT. DRIVER 3 WAS INATTENTIVE AND VEHICLE 3 STRUCK THE REAR OF VEHICLE 2. DRIVER 4 WAS FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY AND VEHICLE 4 STRUCK THE REAR OF VEHICLE 3. SCHATZ SUBJECT PRONOUNCED AT 1315 HOURS AND BRINKER SUBJECT WAS PRONOUNCED AT 1338 HOURS. BOTH SUBJECTS WERE PRONOUNCED BY FRANKLIN COUNTY MEDICAL EXAMINER MIKE COPELAND. MTD:6 YTD:78

Also, "Driver 3" (the driver of the first bus) is 75 years old. IMHO, that's too old to be driving a bus full of kids. Flame away...
