Simple Question re: Deleting Cookies

Well, it's not simple to me. I'm too afraid to ask this on the computer forum as I'm afraid I'll be laughed out of the place. So, here goes...

I want to delete my cookies....will all my favorites go away? .....or does this mean I will have to re-register at all the places I visit.... & try to remember usernames and passwords? Anything I should be aware of before I do it?

Presuming that you are using a PC, not a MAC:

No...your favorties are saved in a MS Windows directory.

but if you have "saved" your userid and/or password (like here at the KT) so that you don't have to signin/logon each visit...you might yourself having to sign in each visit. On the KT (and many other sites), that userid and password are saved in a cookie.

userid/password information that is saved in Windows, are not stored in cookies.

no, katclaws, if you delete your cookies you WON'T delete your favorites. However deleting your cookies will cause you to have to put in your log-in and password when you next go on your favorite website. Those log-ins and passwords are stored in your cookies. A good plan is to back up your favorites to a disk by going to the file tab above and clicking on import/export and following the directions. That way if you should lose your favorites at anytime, you can reload them by again clicking on import/export and importing your favorites back to your pc. No one will laugh at you, believe me. We've all been there at some time.

This is similar to what milo wrote, but this has more sources that get blocked. I did this long ago, and it blocks more than just the awful ivillage stuff. At someone else's computer, I was surprised to see that all those ads on the weather page etc. that have a silhoutte of someone, are actually supposed to be someone DANCING! How can anyone can stand that distraction! here's my saved instructions (from someone on G-web): The Universal Solution. This will work on Windows systems for all browsers; IE, FireFox and Netscape. The Windows operating system provides a system-level method to block specific IP addresses before they even get to the browser. To effect this solution you need to edit a Windows system file called hosts. This file is located in the directory: Windows XP: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 2K: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC Windows 98: C:\WINDOWS Open the file in Notepad. Cut the following from this post and paste it to the end of the file. 127.0.0.1 amch.questionmarket.com 127.0.0.1 a820.g.akamai.net 127.0.0.1 iv.doubleclick.net 127.0.0.1 i.ivillage.com 127.0.0.1 m.2mdn.net 127.0.0.1 tste.ivillage.com 127.0.0.1 img-cdn.mediaplex.com 127.0.0.1 ads.vmirror.com 127.0.0.1 cmhtml.ivillage.overture.com 127.0.0.1 ads.pointroll.com Edit each entry so that there is a tab between the IP address 127.0.0.1 and the URLs. Save the file and you're finished. Close and re-open your browser and all the ads will be gone. Unfortunately, iVillage may in the future buy ads from a new source. In this event the new ad source will have to be added to the list.

Zep, I don't understand the connection here. I simply stop programs from running all the time, the below is about problems. I don't have any problems using msconfig, some people may. I have done this almost from the start and haven't had a problem. The microsoft site I visited said to use msconfig to close programs running in the back ground. ____________________ "This article describes how to troubleshoot configuration errors in Windows XP by using the System Configuration utility (Msconfig.exe). What about using tie wraps instead of sewing for those who might be challenged in that area - LOL? If it is something like the stem of the mushroom where you can put your hand in you can do it so the clasp part is on the inside and then you just cut off the excess. I get tiewraps at the dollar type stores and the clasp part is small and the strap part is flat enough that once you cover with cement you aren't going to be able to tell how it is put together anyway. We were cleaning out behind our shed today and came across a bale of chicken wire and I was thinking of a similar project, but the gauze is really too large to have a sturdy frame to build on. You're awful brave to take on such a project on your first try, but seems like you and DH are a great team. Good luck and can't wait to see the finished project. And how would I know they're permanently unwanted ?" If they're in a "temp" folder, you can pretty much be sure they're no longer needed. It's typically a holding place for files used during an installation. But most install routines don't then remove them - they're just left there to accumulate. I suppose the case could be made that there's no harm in leaving them there - but do we really now that any better than the opposite. You can make the inverse case just as easily. And since there's no harm in emptying the temp file folders, I do it so as to minimize unknowns of interference or unnecessary space usage. I just do it along with emptying the Trash now and then, using CCleaner. There's no extra effort or downside. Anyway, do what makes you happy. Carolyn, I thought you just wanted to know how to clear some things out. What is the actual problem you are trying to solve by clearing a temp folder or cookies ?

Wow, thanks so much for your quick answers. I've lost favorites before & trying to "recreate" them is a nightmare. Thanks for the tip about backup, vee, some of my usernames & passwords have slight variations so I appreciate your letting me know about that.

Never be afraid to ask anything over there, and tell what your concerns are. They may ask a few questions before they can give an answer though. like what browser are you using...and if you don't happen to know (and some don't) they will happily explain how you can tell which one, and which version, etc.

They are not like 'some' computer forums I have been to....I 'was' treated like a dummie at other places...

Most of your cookies can be deleted. They'll get rewritten as you log-in and visit sites. However, in my experience, I have found a few cookies that were needed. These are the ones used by installed software for identification and registration purposes. Several years ago, I disabled the automatic update feature in my virus checker because it was using a cookie. I had to re-register it.
