Zep...quick question..I gave Start up lite a shot and it listed 5 items which it suggested be disabled and had them "x'ed". when I clicked continue, a box popped up saying (wouldnt let me copy)eg: "Error on value: TkBellExe. There was an error creating a MSConfig key."
Has this happened to you???any idea what it might be...by the way, there was an error box for each of the five items..same error just changed the item name.(Quicktime, MSNmsngr, SunJava, swg etc)

Problem solved, call off the hounds...with Vista, right click on the Startup Lite icon and choose Run as Administrator.....works great....Sorry

See if genes approach works. When you're done I'd like to see a Hijackthis log, I can give instructions for that if needed. The reason being I want to see how thorough Start up lite is. Hijackthis will show all registry run keys 04's those are the programs that start up so we can see what is left if any.

When you talk about start up are you talking about the one in msconfig. If you are I have all unchecked but the ones that need to run in the background. They are Secunia, MS Security Essentials, weather Watcher and spyware blaster.

Many people frequently use MSconfig as a long term solution to control startup processes and services. You will also see many websites condoning use of MSconfig and teaching you how to use it for controlling startups. This is a very bad idea for many reasons.

1 MSconfig was designed to be used only as a temporary debugging/troubleshooting tool. It was not meant to be used for long term solutions.

2 MSconfig does not show all startups anyway.

3 If you uninstall programs while they are being disabled with MSconfig, they will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to properly get everything removed. MSconfig will leave orphan entries if/when installed software is uninstalled while under the control of MSconfig . When/if MSconfig is turned back to normal startup, it will give errors on boot due to those orphan entries.

4 MSconfig and Services:
If you uninstall programs while you have some of the programs services being controlled with MSconfig, the programs will not be uninstall properly and you will have to resort to manual registry editing to get everything properly removed.
When you uncheck a service in msconfig, you completely disable it. If you uncheck the wrong one, you may not be able to restart your computer.
It is safer to control services by using Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services (this runs services.msc).

5 You can lock malware items into your registry that you may not see anymore until some point in time where you switch back to Normal Startup mode and now you can cause total reinfection of your PC with the malware. You need to remove the malware not mask it.

I was told to do that years ago to speed up my PC. Is there another place I can see what is running in the back ground.

Zep....I used startuplite and it found nothing unnecessary running.

I also Googled how to close down running programs and they all said the same, do it in msconfig. Windows 7 forum, geek.com and yahoo are the places I remember. Windows 7 had 3 methods and msconfig was one of them. Why do the still recommend this.

azinoh, what's running was far to confusing for me.

I try to alway, use CCleaner to disable or remove startup items that dont want to uninstall. CCleaner Tools StartUp option. Quick & Simple.

Ccleaner makes use of msconfig.

[B]IMPORTANT NOTE:[/B] DO NOT use Ccleaner or Glary Utilities or Startup Manager to control startups either since they just makes use of MSconfig registry keys which you do not want to use. And these registry keys belong to Microsoft not to Ccleaner, Glary Utilities, or to Startup Manager and they should not be using these registry keys since only MSconfig should be using them. After all, that is why they are labeled as MSconfig!!! Allowing them to use these registry keys, makes it look like MSconfig has orphaned these registry keys since MSconfig will not appear to be in use. Orphaned keys may be deleted by cleaning tools.

Even the MS site suggests using msconfig to shut down unnecessary programs to speed up your PC.

Do not delete entries, only disable them. There are a lot of entries that can be disabled. However, caution should be used. To blindly disable can effect general system operations; i.e. printer, keyboard, audio, wireless Internet service.

Zep, I don't understand the connection here. I simply stop programs from running all the time, the below is about problems. I don't have any problems using msconfig, some people may. I have done this almost from the start and haven't had a problem. The microsoft site I visited said to use msconfig to close programs running in the back ground.
