DS surgery update

They did the surgery early this morning.Everything went well.The vena cava is clear,which was what we were most concerned about.They "roto rooted" two places then put the stents in.One on each leg.The one in the left leg goes from the knee all the way up into the groin area.He won't ever be able to bend,like to tie a shoe,because it could crush the stent.I'm sure that is going to take some getting use.Things should start getting better now.They will move him to a private room tomorrow and start PT.Don't know yet how long he will be in the hospital.

I'm glad that's over! Praying he makes a full recovery..AND can get use to not bending that leg! That is going to be hard!!

If you can get it, and the insurance will pay for it, ask your cancer doctor about a Petscan. It is less invasive on the system, as they put radio active stuff in the veins, but not in the port. It shows alot more than the CT scan, in fact DH's cancer was still under remission, but his Dr. said--oh by the way, you have pneumonia. He had felt icky, but no fever. It was like walking pneumonia, but she called it something viral. He is now on doxcillian as the other antibiotic did not touch it. Anyway, the Petscan will not damage other organs like CT scans do. It is radio active sugar stuff, and he is a diabetic and it is ok to use. The sugar attaches itself to any cancer and it shows up.

Keeping him and you in prayer. Isn't it amazing what can be done these days?? It sounds like they have a solid plan for his condition and things are going as hoped for. My daughter's former teacher's ds had this problem several years ago, and she was sick with worry. All turned out well and they were able to bust the clot. Thank you for your update.

That's wonderful, lilliepad! It sounded like things were quite precarious there for awhile--you must be mentally exhausted. How long will he need to have the stents in his legs? Will he be going home soon? Hooray!

Although I haven't posted in awhile, I have been following the threads concerning your son. It's great the surgery went so well. You guys sure have been through alot. Thank care of yourself, too!

LOL Moonie! I had to read your post a second time to catch your mistake.
Sjerin-The stents are permanent.We don't know when he will be going home.They moved him to a private room today and will start PT tomorrow.DDIL told them we weren't bringing him home this time until he was able to walk around and do things for himself! That was what started all this in the first place.He was suppose to be getting up and walking several times a day but was staying in bed or sitting in his recliner all the time.I think he has learned his lesson.I think he realizes how close he came to being dead.If he hadn't had that filter he would be dead!
As for me and DH,we are about ready to disappear for a while! Two babies in the "terrible two's" stage on top of everything else is about to get the best of us old people!LOL Hopefully everything will smooth out in a few weeks though and things will get back to normal,whatever that is! I'm seriously contemplating a few days of daycare for the two little monsters so I can get some rest.LOL Not really.They are actually pretty good most of the time but they do have their moments and can be a handful.We will make it though!
