Dog with colitis?

I have to go in a few minutes to pick up my little dog, who had four teeth pulled today. The vet said she has also has colitis! I will be researching it when I get a chance, but I was wondering if anyone else has a dog with colitis and what your experiences are. I hope this isn't going to be debilitating for her.

Just spent $187 on Saturday because my dog had it. It's not long term, I don't think. The vet likened it to a human eating a bad shrimp and getting sick from it. My dog had the bloody stools and was vomiting blood. He was back to his old self the next day, after staying overnight there.

Very bland diet for 3 days though, and I have to watch him around the cat food that sits outside.

Hope your doggie feels better and hasn't suffered too much.

(Our dogs must be related, lol).

Thanks, Zeetera, she had a very rough day. She had her teeth cleaned and three of them pulled. She's only three pounds and she is not taking it well. She did eat some soft food, but she hasn't had a drink at all today. She cries every now and then, but I called the vet and they said they gave her a 24 hour pain injection and she can't have anything else. She's sleeping now, and I hope tomorrow is better. I'm sure it will be.

Anyway, she has bloody stools and a sore bum. She's on meds for 14 days, and he suspects that will clear things up, with the new food.

Golddust, sounds like Belle is so lucky to have such a caring owner. I give my dogs fresh raw green tripe on occasion, which is essentially a non dairy, food sourced version of a probiotic for them. Smells unpleasant lol, but my dogs go crazy for it. I feed a Prey model raw diet, which is simply a diet of a variety of raw meat (certain bone in meats and boneless) and raw organs. http://preymodelraw.com/page/articles.html I do give them a little bit of veggies, or fruit on occasion, but it's usually just as a treat. As long as a PMR diet is fed with enough variety in meats and organs, it can actually meet the NRC nutritional numbers for dogs without the need to feed vegetables/fruits, or any carbohydrates etc. I have two small chest freezers in my garage and buy meat (sometimes in bulk during sales, or from a raw feeding coop, or I get meat donated from local hunters). Their usual weekly variety includes fish, chicken, beef, pork, eggs, and turkey, other meats they also get include lamb, venison, quail, buffalo, and duck. Each meal is usually just one single protein source. I just cut up the meats and organs into meal sized portions for them, freeze, defrost in the fridge, and feed. Feeding raw is just easier for me because it's far less calculating and less supplementing nutrient wise than most cooked diets. The natural enzymes still present in the food aids in digestion, making food intolerances and allergies less likely. I know some dogs who are allergic to a cooked protein, like chicken or beef, but can still have the raw version of it and be fine. Lola had chronic colitis for 3 years with episodes occurring 1-2 times a week, they cleared up within a few months on the raw diet. I don't usually feed much ground meat, my dogs get more satisfaction and dental/gum cleaning when I feed the bone in meats with the raw bones as a natural source of fiber, and calcium. My dogs are 8 and 12, and haven't needed Vet dentals due to eating and chewing raw bones (properly). Raw bones, fed properly to dogs can be a great teeth/gum cleaner. I've been feeding PMR for over 3 years now, and have had fantastic results according to regular blood work etc. done on them. The difference in health is interesting and my vet is very supportive of it. However, I don't think raw diets are for every dog or owner, and they certainly have their controversy. I like coconut oil to moisturize lips, skin, hair, stir fry veggies, make curries, and husband uses it to pop popcorn. From what I've read, the problematic fats are the ones which are partially hydrogenated (trans fats) and, according to medical research, cause all kinds of health issues. They were widely used in prepared foods, but the FDA banned them a few years ago and many companies have replaced them with other oils.

Generic is fine. lol Don't know the size of the pups, but I would feed about 15% All Bran by volume. Replace 15% of the kibble with the All Bran. Let's say my pup was getting one cup in the AM and PM. What I would do is fill the cup up 80-85% with kibble and then top off the cup with All Bran. Add some water to the bowl, something I do anyway.That way you can adjust as the days go on. If you calculate the total calories, it'll likely end up being about the same calories as before. You do not want your pup to lose weight nor become dehydrated. Please let us know how your efforts work out. If things don't improve in a few days I'd sure be back in contact with the Vet.

I'm surprised they released her, poor thing. The reason why they kept my dog overnight was so that they could quickly insert an IV if he became dehydrated. Maybe she can lick some ice cubes tomorrow.

I hope she likes the new food.

She does seem to like the new food, but not the medicine. Most medicines she takes with no problem(s), but this is going to be a bit tricky. Today she was panting, and she went to the water dish but just put her head down in front of it. Maybe I'll try sitting the dog food in a bit of water, just a bit. Even though it's canned food, it's really dry, so if I chop up the pieces and sit them in some water, she'll lap them up with the food. Maybe if I'm really lucky, she will just drink in the morning...

Our dog was vomiting every night around 3 a.m. We combat his excess stomach acid by feeding him low residue kibble in small portions, three and sometimes four times a day. (Object is to keep 'something' in the stomach.) He's nine now and fine most of the time IF he stays away from rabbit poop in the yard! (Consequences don't occur quickly enough for him to learn not to eat it.)

Hope your teeny baby is feeling better. Our dog has gone three days without eating, then he's back to normal.

Are you talking colitis as in upset tummy or colitis as in Ulcerative Colitis?

I have a cat that has colitis/Inflammatory Bowel Disease. She's had it for several years, but we keep it controlled with daily Flagyl (antibiotic, antiparasitic and anti-inflammatory) and Prednisone (anti-inflammatory).

It's an autoimmune disorder, just like in humans and the medications help to suppress the overactive immune response.

Thanks for asking, ladies. She still seems a little fragile, but much better than yesterday. She's even better this afternoon than she was this morning. She's starting to drink some, although she's not peeing much. She seems to want to, and then it's like her bum is bothering her and she changes her mind. I think her mouth is more improved than her bum and tummy. She is trying to drag her bum, and I know it's not her "glands". Tally, I'm not sure... he did prescribe an antibiotic for 14 days, and special canned food. I'm glad she likes the food. She did have blood in her stools.
