I didn't realize I was a senior citizen!

I went to the car wash yesterday and asked for the basic wash which is usually $10.00. I gave the cashier my $2.00 off coupon and she told me I owed her $6.00. As I paid I asked her if they had lowered their prices because I usually pay around $8.00.

She replied- Oh, no, it's senior citizen day.

That's the first time that has happened and I can't decide if I should be thankful or worried that I look much older than the 58 that I am. I didn't have the heart to ask how old you had to be to get the discount. If she had said 65 I might have cried all the way home. I should remember when I was a teenager I had no concept of age. And I'd better get used to this because it's going to happen more frequently.

:) Maybe it is a good thing. AARP considers 50 as
the beginning of "senior hoodness" LOL. Maybe she
thought you were about 50.

Take those discounts as they come!!

It could very well be that their "senior" age is 50.

Oooh, I'm really Badddd! We have an acre and 1/3rd. I have hundreds of fruiting varieties of trees/shrubs/vines. Not counting the veggie gardens or herbs, or indoor/foliage/flowering/useless plants. It doesn't look like anywhere near that number! I plant in groups, and still have lots in containers on the patio. It adds up in a hurry. Last time I counted I had 50 Citrus. Yet, we still have lots of lawn left. I like to get all the varieties available in each plant grouping, such as all the dwarf Mangoes. Smaller plants mean I have room for more(G). One day I'll get a complete list together, and then I'll be horrified at what I have spent over the years. But, having fruit ripening all year round is so cool and such delicious fun! I really like roaming my yard, picking fresh foods every day! I encourage you all to grow your own fruit/veggies. Then you have control over your food, a easy way to execise, and a stress relief from day to day living. This morning I picked Papayas, Red Limes, Satsumas, Figs, Bearrs Lemons, Calamondins, Bananas, Barbados Cherries, Meyer lemons, Muntingias and Macadamia nuts. Oh, and 15 fresh eggs from the henhouse! Oopsie, I plan on talking to him. Because I have seen his temper I'm afraid of what he may do, not sure why? When he let me know that the wood grain was going to show thru in the front of the cabinets, said how that wasn't included in the sanding and spackling, I agreed to give him 200 extra, even though DH and I knew it was included, wanted it done right. When he let me know his estimate for painting skylight, sofit and walls didn't include ceiling, he thought it was going to be another extra. Who would expect a job with (new lighting,under counter lighting, granite counertops, carpentry, crown molding, floor, added pull outs, new appliences)not to have ceiling painted? At this point I just want to pay him for what he has done and get him out of my house. If I have to stay home with him while he paints the inside frame with 2 coats of paint, I will sit in the kitchen and watch. Is there anyway of me telling if he did the agreed on 2 coats of paint on the front part of my cabinets? Since he told me several times it wasn't necessary to give 2 coats of paint, I feel he didn't do it,even though he said he did, obviously I don't trust him any more. When he paints the frames he will have to cover my granite, and will also have to take the doors off (inside hindges), do I tell him this, or assume he will do this the proper way? I'm afraid the quality of this work won't be the same, which is why I ageed to the price he gave me. My mistake was looking at his own house as an example of his work, in my home he cut as many corners as he could, in his own home he cut no corners. He has also told me several times that for the "money I paid him and for my doors I could have had a new kitchen", till I asked him never to say that again. He has made other comments, which have done what they are suppose to do, shut me up and get me out of the kitchen! Thanks in advance for your help.

Definitely depression can occur during the menopausal years, and sometimes persist in the senior years as well. If you just feel mildly depressed, I'd continue with some of the things you're already doing (light therapy, getting out with friends, etc.) but if you begin to feel blue more often than not, I'd see your doctor. Some people feel very much better, on just the lowest dose of an anti-depressant. My sister has been on a very low dose for 15 years, but finds she returns to chronic mild depression when she goes off her low dose. Her doctor says she's fine her low dose forever, as it rids her melancholy and gives her no side effects. However, many women do go on anti-depressants during menopause, then go off them a few years into post menopause, and have no returning depression.

Sheesh, why so sensitive? Anything past about 40 is old. Face it, 100 years ago or a little more, a lot of people didn't live past that age. Depending on the place, you're a "senior" in their eyes at different ages and AARP starts harassing you big time at about 50. 50, 55, 60, 62, 65 are all ages that different places qualify as "senior". If you qualify for a "senior discount" then you're a senior. I'm not bothered by it. I know I'm old and I don't care. Give me my fogey funds and get outta my way you young whippersnappers, playing your funny music and strange clothes. I have a rocking chair and I use it.

Thank you Molly and Susan for your kind words. I never thought of 50 - now I guess I should feel like it was a compliment or that I've been cheated out of discounts for years.

I'm not really worried about looking my age - I think it was the novelty that surprised me. I'm used to my DAd getting the discounts, not me.

My DH who is only 46 got a senior citizen discount in a Branson grocery store. He didn't even know he got it, but I was looking at the receipt and saw it ( a whole 16 cents! whoohoo!). I thought it was very funny, he didn't though.

A certain day at Ross they give a SC discount. When they asked me if I was a senior I made the mistake of asking how old do you have to be. It was 55 or 60, LOL I'm 51 and said no.

We got a new fifth wheel when I was about 23. We immediately started getting all kinds of junk mail from AARP and other senior organizations.

Some of the stores here have "senior" discounts and they start at 55, so maybe the same with your car wash? Either way enjoy the savings!

When I was in college I worked at a grocery store and had to ID people who bought alcohol. I could never guess really well, and I swear one of the people I asked was 34!! I eventually just said I had to card everyone!

Maybe the clerk considered anyone who looked over 40 to be a senior, with no questions asked. That happened to me years ago in a Wendy's Restaurant. Our drinks were free, and when I questioned it, I was told that it was the senior discount that day. I just assumed that lots of folks got the discount, rather than ask questions of anyone looking over 40 or so.

I thanked her and let it go at that, not really wanting to know anymore about the details of the discount.

I was shopping one day at an outlet mall that is in a university town. So many of the employees are students. The cashier ask the lady ahead of me if she wanted her senior citizen discount. I told my friend that she better not ask me that!!! She didn't, although I might have qualified. LOL Many places now start their discount at 50. Jammer is always asking for his senior citizen discount and he's only 48, but has lots of gray hair.

I'll take the discount anyday but I consider a Senior Citizen being someone around 90.

I'll ask for the discount, I'm 55. To me a Senior Citizen is anyone over 85, you have to be at least my Mother's age to qualify!!!

DH turned 50 in May. Of course we had to have a suprise get together with lots of gag gifts. I get the mail each day so when I recieved his first ever AARP card I hid it until the party. I stuck it in with his birthday cards that had been placed on his Mothers coffee table. As he was going through his cards he saw the AARP and said "oh this isin't mine" Was he ever shocked to look more closley and see HIS name and not his Mothers! We all got a real good chuckle. I guess Im next! Seniorhood....here I come! LOL

We have a couple of stores here that have senior discounts on Tuedays and you only have to be 55 to get 10% off. 55 also counts for the senior menu at the iHop restaurant.

I always show my ID, and tell them the polite thing to do is to look shocked and swear they never thought I could be old enough for the discount. That always gets a chuckle. I'm 58 now.

Please don't worry about how old you look -- the cashier was probably told that it was rude to ask people their age, since most folks showing up for car washes on Tuesdays would be seniors.

The rule of thumb is: Old is always 15 years older than my current age. Therefore, I will never be old (not that there's anything wrong with that) until I'm dead. ;)

Oh, to be carded just one more time....LOLOL...that ain't gonna happen!

One time "before" I was a senior, I was in a fast food joint and the kid asked if I wanted the senior discount. I told him, yes. He then asked how old I was. I told him that didn't matter...he asked if I wanted it and I said, yes, and I expected to get it :o) I don't think they should "ask"..many of them are very poor judges of age and it makes a person feel bad when they "aren't" seniors yet. It should be up to the person to "ask" for the discount.
