Spin off of Joann's frustrating day

We used to do contract work for the public defender's juvenile division. In all the years we had that contract and hundreds of juveniles we represented, out of all of them, only one set of parents ever, ever made their child own up to the consequences of their actions. 99.99% of parents of these young offenders parents' defended them, placed the blame on someone else or would even lie for them to try to get them out of trouble. It's easy to see why these kids were in the system in the first place. And why they keep popping back up.

The one exception was a young girl who had been with a gang of kids stealing stereos out of boats. In addition to the court sanctions, her parents put her to work at their motel and every single dime of her wages went to re-pay the victims for the damage done to their boats in the course of the robberies. Last I heard she had taken over the motel for her parents and was doing quite well.
